Correlates of heavy drinking and alcohol related problems among men and women in drug treatment programs.

A series of analyses were conducted to explore if there were significant differences in heavy drinking and alcohol-related problems in clients admitted to different types of drug treatment programs and whether such differences, if found, could be attributed to variation in social characteristics, drug use behavior, drinking norms, drinking contexts, or in reasons for combining alcohol and drug use. Men and women (N = 246) in four types of publicly funded treatment programs were interviewed at intake regarding drinking and drug use patterns and related problems. The results of the study showed

Integrated environmental and clinical surveillance for the prevention of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in indoor environments and vulnerable communities (Stell-ARI): Protocol.

The epidemiological relevance of viral acute respiratory infections (ARIs) has been dramatically highlighted by COVID-19. However, other vir … rly detection of ARIs within enclosed and vulnerable communities such as long-term care facilities, prisons and primary schools. The rapid transmission of ARIs in such environments underscores the importance of comprehensive surveillance strategies to minimise the risk of outbreaks and safeguard community health, enabling proactive prevention and control …

Examining inequities associated with incarceration among breast cancer patients.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer treatment patterns and quality of care among patients experiencing incarceration are underexplored. This study examined associations between incarceration and breast cancer disease and treatment characteristics. METHODS: This retrospective analysis was conducted at a tertiary center in the Southeastern United States that serves as the state's safety-net hospital and primary referral site for the state's prisons. All patients ≥18 years diagnosed with breast cancer between 4/14/2014-12/30/2020 were included. Incarceration status was determined through electronic heal…

The Current State and Legal Issues of Online Crimes Related to Children and Adolescents.

There are two categories of online crimes related to children and adolescents: those committed by adolescents and those committed against ch … shame, and at what stage sexual grooming becomes punishable. For example, sniping posts, KakaoTalk prisons, and chat room explosions are tricky issues, as they may or may not be punished depending on the case. Particular caution should be exercised against the indiscriminate application of a strict punishment-oriented approach to the juvenile justice sys …

From Punishment to Treatment: The "Clinical Alternative to Punitive Segregation" (CAPS) Program in New York City Jails.

The proliferation of jails and prisons as places of institutionalization for persons with serious mental illness (SMI) has resulted in many of these patients receiving jail-based punishments, including solitary confinement. Starting in 2013, the New York City (NYC) jail system developed a new treatment unit for persons with SMI who were judged to have violated jail rules (and previously would have been punished with solitary confinement) called the Clinical Alternative to Punitive Segregation (CAPS) unit. CAPS is designed to offer a full range of therapeutic activities and interventions for th…

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) achieve adherence to and outcomes from hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment comparable to other pati … r registration by name as a drug user prior to treatment initiation; and incarceration/detention in prisons and rehabilitation centers where treatment is unavailable. High medicine prices force further exclusion of PWID, with cost containment masked as concern about treatment adherence. These barriers correlate to multiple rights violations, including of …

Incarcerated intravenous heroin users: predictors of post-release utilization of methadone maintenance treatment.

Incarcerated intravenous heroin users have more problematic patterns of heroin use, but are less likely to access methadone maintenance treatment by their own initiative than heroin users in the community. The present study examined predictors for receiving methadone maintenance treatment post-release among incarcerated intravenous heroin users within a 24-month period. This cohort study recruited 315 incarcerated intravenous heroin users detained in 4 prisons in southern Taiwan and followed up within the 24-month period post-release. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was applied to…

Maximizing retention with high risk participants in a clinical trial.

PURPOSE: To describe effective retention strategies in a clinical trial with a high risk, low-income, and vulnerable patient population with serious mental illness. Gender difference in the clinical and behavioral characteristics of human immunodeficiency virus-infected injection drug users in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Injection drug users (IDUs) have become the major contributors to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome epidemic in Taiwan, accounting for more than 60% of new cases in 2005. In Taiwan, gender difference in risk factors for HIV among IDUs has not been reported before. We studied the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics, sexual behaviors, drug use histories and criminal records of male and female HIV-infected IDUs. METHODS: A total of 100 male and 25 female HIV-infected inmates from two prisons were included. An individually stru…

Elderly Offenders With Suspected Neurocognitive Disorders: An Explorative Study.

BACKGROUND: Life expectancy is increasing globally. A substantial expected rise in older age groups in the population is reflected in prisons, but focus on elderly offenders remains limited compared to other age groups. This is of concern, as cognitive impairments are often present among elderly offenders, possibly affecting their behaviour, criminal responsibility and responsiveness to treatment. AIMS: The objective of this study was to explore the associations between various cognitive variables, neurological diagnosis and different types of crime by offenders of 60 years or older. METHODS…

The Contribution of Yoga to the Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration of Incarcerated Individuals: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Incarcerated people experience high rates of trauma, psychological distress, and social marginalization. Yoga has been introduced in prisons as a trauma-sensitive mind-body practice, yet its rehabilitative contribution remains uncertain. This systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence on the feasibility and effectiveness of yoga interventions delivered in correctional settings. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines and a preregistered PROSPERO protocol, we searched PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane CENTRAL, and Scopus for peer-reviewed publications from May 2012 to November …

Comparison of phylogenetic metrics of transmission in symptomatic and asymptomatic tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Understanding drivers of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) transmission remains a critical challenge in high-burden settings. Tuberculosis control efforts traditionally target symptomatic individuals, yet the role of asymptomatic cases in sustaining transmission is increasing recognized. METHODS: We conducted a genomic and epidemiological analysis of Mtb isolates collected in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, between 2008 and 2024. From 2017 to 2022, active case finding was performed in three of the state's largest prisons, whereby sputum was collected from individuals irrespective of sy…

Criminal reactions to drug-using offenders: A systematic review of the effect of treatment and/or punishment on reduction of drug use and/or criminal recidivism.

The association between substance use and crime is very common, but complex. Several countries have found strategies to face drug abuse and criminality that may exist associated to it, seeking to reduce overcrowded prisons and to promote the reductions of criminal recidivism and/or substance use. Through the guidelines of PRISMA, a systematic review was conducted with the aim to explore the different criminal reactions to individuals who use substances and are involved in the criminal justice system, namely the role of treatment and/or punishment in the reduction of crime recidivism and/or dru…

By 3 months, only diagnosis in 'other' settings (prisons, drug services, community and other medical settings) was significant.
