BACKGROUND: Universal coverage with long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) is a primary control strategy against Plasmodium falciparum malaria. However, its impact on the three other main species of human malaria and lymphatic filariasis (LF), which share the same vectors in many co-endemic areas, is not as well characterized. The recent development of multiplex antibody detection provides the opportunity for simultaneous evaluation of the impact of control measures on the burden of multiple diseases.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Two cross-sectional household surveys at baseline and one ye

After >10 years of enduring operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, Defence Strategic Direction is returning to a contingency posture. As the first post-Afghanistan operation, in September 2014, a UK Joint Inter-Agency Task Force deployed to Sierra Leone in response to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic in West Africa. The aims were expanding treatment capacity, assisting with training and supporting host nation resilience. The insertion phase of this deployment created a unique set of challenges for force health protection. In addition to the considerable risk of tropical disease and trauma,

Africa was home to 95% of malaria cases and deaths in 2021. The negative impacts of malaria can be aggravated by social-economic-environmental factors, more so agroeconomic practices such as irrigation, mining, and dam construction. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of water harvesting, sugarcane farming, and mining activities on Plasmodium falciparum positivity rates and parasitemia densities in five selected sites in Msambweni Subcounty, Kwale Kenya. A cross-sectional concurrent mixed methods study was used to collect data. Kwale County was selected due to the high malaria

Dengue fever is a viral infectious disease transmitted through mosquito bites, and has symptoms ranging from mild flu-like symptoms to deadly complications. Dengue fever is one of the global burden diseases which annually have 50-100 million cases with 500,000 cases of severe dengue fever, of which 22,000 deaths occur mostly in children. Despite the discovery of vaccines, vector control is still the main approach for prevention efforts. Early detection and accessibility to medical care can reduce severe Dengue mortality rate from 50% to 2%. In the previous study, both statistical and machine l

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease that is associated with four serotypes of the dengue virus. Children are vulnerable to infection with the dengue virus, particularly those who have been previously infected with a different dengue serotype. Sufficient knowledge, positive attitudes, and proper practices (KAP) are essential for dengue prevention and control. This study aims to estimate the dengue seropositivity for study participants and to examine the association between households' dengue-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP), and children's risk of dengue

Travel-associated malaria is a health hazard, even in non-malaria endemic regions. This is a hospital-based retrospective study of 12,931 febrile patients who presented at King Fahad Hospital of the University (KFHU) from January 2009 to December 2019. Patients either returning from malaria endemic countries and/or for whom malaria was suspected, had blood films microscopically screened for malaria parasites. Malaria prevalence was very low in febrile patients attending KFHU. Out of the 12,931 febrile patients, 0.63% (n = 81) were malaria positive, all travel-related, except for one case of tr

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Malaria has remained a global health problem despite the effective control and treatment measures. In the backdrop of drug resistance, developing novel hybrid molecules targeting the sexual stages (gametocytes) of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum is of great significance. Recently, chalcone- based polyphenols have generated a great interest in the malaria research community worldwide due to their ease of synthesis and significant biological activity. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the interaction of a newly synthesized quinoline-

Malaria is still a major public health problem in Brazil, with approximately 306,000 registered cases in 2009, but it is estimated that in the early 1940s, around six million cases of malaria occurred each year. As a result of the fight against the disease, the number of malaria cases decreased over the years and the smallest numbers of cases to-date were recorded in the 1960s. From the mid-1960s onwards, Brazil underwent a rapid and disorganized settlement process in the Amazon and this migratory movement led to a progressive increase in the number of reported cases. Although the main mosquit

Lymphatic filariasis is a disease of the poor and underprivileged and has received little attention in the past. In particular, there has been a lack of gender sensitive research on women and lymphatic filariasis. Women suffer from lymphatic filariasis to a great extent but embarrassment, shame, cultural constraints and social taboos are some of the reasons that refrain them from reporting problems and seeking help. Women are thus silently bearing the brunt of this disease. This study has tried to obtain basic information on women and lymphatic filariasis with a gender approach. To understand

INTRODUCTION: Given the growing health impact of dengue fever in recent years, which primarily affects Latin American countries and Colombia in particular, interdisciplinary studies and scientific and technological advances to combat it, such as vaccines, mosquito genetic modification techniques, vector control using drones, and digital surveillance systems, among others, are becoming increasingly important. However, despite these achievements, little is known about the disease itself. The relationship between knowledge, sanitation conditions, and the preventive actions against dengue can be u

BACKGROUND: Effective malaria control in under-five children depends on caregivers seeking timely medical care. However, despite available healthcare services, many caregivers do not utilize health facilities, undermining malaria control efforts. This study assessed care-seeking behaviour of caregivers for suspected malaria in under-five children and associated factors in a southwest state of Nigeria.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in Ondo State, Southwestern Nigeria. The study areas were Ifedore, Ondo East, and Idanre Local Government Areas (LGAs) randomly selected

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: India has made significant progress in combating malaria and reducing malaria-related mortality and morbidity. Yet, local transmission and malaria hotspots are important hurdles as India looks to achieve malaria elimination by 2030. Gadchiroli district is a highly malaria-endemic area in Maharashtra state of India. It accounts for more than 50% of the reported malaria cases in the state. Anopheles culicifacies and An. fluviatilis are the primary malaria vectors in the area. However, the status of vector sibling species is unknown in the district. In this study, we aimed

INTRODUCTION: Anopheles stephensi is a major urban malaria vector in Rajasthan, India, and is responsible for spreading persistent malaria throughout the year. In Rajasthan, An. stephensi is invariably distributed and has three bioforms discriminated based on the number of the ridge on the eggs viz; Type, Mysorensis, and Intermediate. The present study aimed to understand the distribution pattern of these bioforms in rural and urban setups as they also have differences in their malaria transmission capacity.
METHODS: Gravid mosquitoes and the larvae were collected from different habitats of d

BACKGROUND: The swift expansion of the invasive malaria vector Anopheles stephensi throughout Africa presents a major challenge to malaria control initiatives. Unlike the native African vectors, An. stephensi thrives in urban settings and has developed resistance to multiple classes of insecticides, including pyrethroids, organophosphates, and carbamates.
METHODS: Insecticide susceptibility tests were performed on field-collected An. stephensi mosquitoes from Awash Sebac Kilo, Ethiopia, to assess insecticide resistance levels. Illumina RNA-seq analysis was then employed to compare the transcr
