A review of all clinical files with pre-operative diagnosis of intra-thoracic goiter operated in our Department from 2001-2009 was made. PURPOSE: We report the long-term results of needle suspension of the bladder neck for stress incontinence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 382 patients with stress incontinence underwent either the Stamey (group 1, 342 women) or Gittes procedure (group 2, 40) in a nonrandomized trial. Surgical outcomes and patient satisfaction were assessed by questionnaires. Surgical outcomes were then analyzed in relation to surgical procedures, McGuire incontinence types and patient age. Followup averaged 8.1 years for group 1 and 5.0 years for group 2.

Arthroscopically assisted rotator cuff repair, through a mini-open, deltoid-splitting approach, is an effective treatment for small- to medium-sized full-thickness tears of the rotator cuff. Advantages over traditional open repair include relative deltoid preservation, the ability to assess and treat coexisting intra-articular pathology, shorter hospitalization, reduced early morbidity, easier and quicker rehabilitation, and a smaller scar. Standard open repair is preferred for larger tears with a greater degree of tendon retraction or when the subscapularis tendon is involved in the tear.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to describe the benefits afforded by treatment with LH-RH analogues to patients with physical or mental disorders that consult for acute urinary retention or urinary symptomatology secondary to benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).
METHODS: 52 patients with BPH in whom surgery was contraindicated due to poor mental or physical condition were treated with LH-RH analogue for six consecutive months a year for a period of three years. Thirty-eight patients had acute urinary retention and 14 had prostatic symptomatology.

A series of three experiments examined the possible involvement of endogenous opioid peptides in the development of schedule-induced polydipsia in rats. Repeated pretraining treatment with 2 mg/kg naloxone impaired acquisition of schedule-induced polydipsia, whereas the same treatment injected after training increased drinking. This later effect was time dependent, since a 30-min delay in the injection of naloxone resulted in a disappearance of its effect. Midazolam 0.07 mg/kg was compared with diazepam 0.12 mg/kg intravenously as an adjuvant to ketamine anaesthesia in healthy patients undergoing minor gynaecological operations of less than 15 minutes duration. The occurrence of induction and emergence sequelae, and patient acceptance of the technique was assessed by means of a questionnaire. The incidence of unpleasant dreams was 6.7% with midazolam and 26.7% with diazepam. There was no significant difference in any other sequelae. Overall patient acceptance was high at 96.7%.
