BACKGROUND: Recently, innovative attempts have been made to identify moyamoya disease (MMD) by focusing on the morphological differences in the head of MMD patients. Following the recent revolution in the development of deep learning (DL) algorithms, we designed this study to determine whether DL can distinguish MMD in plain skull radiograph images.
METHODS: Three hundred forty-five skull images were collected as an MMD-labeled dataset from patients aged 18 to 50 years with definite MMD. As a control-labeled data set, 408 skull images of trauma patients were selected by age and sex matching.

PURPOSE: Carotid near-occlusion is a tight atherosclerotic stenosis of the internal carotid artery (ICA) resulting in decrease in diameter of the vessel lumen distal to the stenosis. Near-occlusions can be classified as with or without full collapse, and may have high peak systolic velocity (PSV) across the stenosis, mimicking conventional > 50% carotid artery stenosis. We aimed to determine how frequently near-occlusions have high PSV in the stenosis and determine how accurately carotid Doppler ultrasound can distinguish high-velocity near-occlusion from conventional stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Despite continuing advances in finite element software, the realistic simulation of middle ear response under acoustic stimulation continues to be challenging. One reason for this is the wide range of possible choices that can be made during the definition of a model. Therefore, an explorative study of the relative influences of some of these choices is potentially very helpful.
METHOD: Three finite element models of the human middle ear were constructed, based on high-resolution micro-computed tomography scans from three different human temporal bones. Interesting variations in m

Knowledge of the intrinsic material properties of healthy and diseased arterial tissue components is of great importance in diagnostics. This study describes an in vitro comparison of 13 porcine carotid arteries using inflation testing combined with functional ultrasound and bi-axial tensile testing. The measured tissue behavior was described using both a linear, but geometrically non-linear, one-parameter (neo-Hookean) model and a two-parameter non-linear (Demiray) model. The shear modulus estimated using the linear model resulted in good agreement between the ultrasound and tensile testing m

Segmenting lung fields from CT (Computed Tomography) scans is an important task for the analysis, diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary diseases. Although many segmentation methods have been presented, some new automatic segmentation methods for the lung fields are still proposed for the CT scans. This paper proposes a novel segmentation method for lung fields by using morphological closing operations and thresholding for normal lungs in CT scans. Additionally, under the guidance of anatomic information, the lung fields could be well segmented with lobar fissure, thin junction between the left/
