BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a common disorder associated with early atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, ischaemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. The gold standard for confirming OSAS is based on an attended overnight polysomnography (PSG) in a sleep laboratory; however lack of health-care resources creates long waiting times for patient access to this diagnostic test. OBJECTIVE: Night-to-night variability of periodic leg movements (PLMs) in restless legs syndrome (RLS) was examined to define the range of intra-subject values, impact upon diagnosing RLS, and clinical correlates.
METHODS: Twenty RLS patients were monitored for 10-15 nights using a validated, tri-axial accelerometer worn on the ankle.

BACKGROUND: All current methods of core temperature monitoring have limitations. There is at least one skin temperature probe that can be modified to a nasal temperature probe (NP). This study was conducted to validate this modified skin temperature probe as an accurate surrogate measure of core temperature by comparing the temperature measurements obtained from NP to those from the esophageal stethoscope (ES).

BACKGROUND: In a porcine model, the cardioprotective effect of sevoflurane was studied with regard to the preservation of myocardial contractility (myocardial stunning) after a myocardial ischaemic insult.
METHODS: Twenty-seven pigs were randomized to receive either a dual 4% sevoflurane inhalation period as a supplement to pentobarbital anaesthesia or pentobarbital anaesthesia only before a 15-min ischaemic insult on the left anterior descending coronary artery. The ischaemic period was followed by 180 min of reperfusion. Myocardial contractility was assessed by myocardial sonomicrometry.

INTRODUCTION: We describe the neurointensive care (NIC) management of a patient with severe cerebral swelling and raised intracranial pressure (ICP) after severe sodium valproic acid (VPA) intoxication. A previously healthy 25-year old male with mild tonic-clonic epilepsy was found unconscious with serum VPA levels >10,000 micromol/l. The patient deteriorated to Glasgow Motor Scale score (GMS) 2 and a CT scan showed signs of raised ICP. Early ICP was elevated, >50 mm Hg, and continuous EEG monitoring showed isoelectric readings.

BACKGROUND: As bladder cancer is a superficial tumor with frequent recurrences, early detection and confirmation of recurrence are important. We evaluated the usefulness of NMP22 BladderChek (NMP22BC) for the diagnosis and monitoring of bladder cancer.
METHODS: From July to December 2004, we enrolled in the study 670 patients who visited the urology clinic in Ewha Womans University, Dongdaemun Hospital with hematuria or dysuria and were tested with NMP22BC.
