Country-level and global burden of diseases caused by group A Streptococcus: protocol for a multicountry epidemiological study.

INTRODUCTION: Group A Streptococcus (Strep A) causes a wide spectrum of diseases, ranging from pharyngitis and impetigo to severe invasive infections and immune-mediated conditions such as acute rheumatic fever, rheumatic heart disease and acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. Contemporary data on the global burden of Strep A diseases are lacking. The proposed study aims to use administrative data from numerous jurisdictions to estimate age-specific incidence or prevalence of Strep A diseases, with an emphasis on severe clinical endpoints. Depending on the availability of data, a second

Cholera epidemic in Haiti, 2010: using a transmission model to explain spatial spread of disease and identify optimal control interventions.

BACKGROUND: Haiti is in the midst of a cholera epidemic. Surveillance data for formulating models of the epidemic are limited, but such models can aid understanding of epidemic processes and help define control strategies. OBJECTIVE: To predict, by using a mathematical model, the sequence and timing of regional cholera epidemics in Haiti and explore the potential effects of disease-control strategies. DESIGN: Compartmental mathematical model allowing person-to-person and waterborne transmission of cholera. Within- and between-region epidemic spread was modeled, with the latter dependent on p

Central venous versus short midline catheter in difficult intravenous access patients: a randomised clinical pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with difficult intravenous access (DIVA) are at increased risk of delays, discomfort and complications due to multiple failed intravenous access attempts. However, evidence comparing commonly used alternatives, short midline catheters (SMLs) and central venous catheters (CVCs) in this population is limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of a larger randomised controlled trial comparing SMLs with CVCs in DIVA patients using predefined feasibility outcomes. DESIGN: This trial was a pragmatic, open-label, single-centre, randomised controlled pilot trial with 1:1 ra

Single-Cell and Bulk RNA-Seq Profiling Identifies Cell Adhesion-Related Gene Signatures in Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) involves complex secondary damage mechanisms, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and blood-brain barrier disruption, in which cell adhesion-related genes play a central role. Therefore, systematically elucidating the expression and regulation of cell adhesion-related genes (CARGs) is crucial for identifying new therapeutic targets to mitigate inflammatory infiltration and preserve barrier integrity. Both single-cell and bulk transcriptomic data were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. The single-cell data were processed using S

Effect of preoperative symptom duration on outcome in lumbar spinal stenosis: a Canadian Spine Outcomes and Research Network registry study.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Lumbar degenerative stenosis is one of the most common spine pathologies for which surgical intervention is indicated. There is some evidence that a prolonged duration of neurological compression could lead to a failure of surgery to alleviate symptoms. PURPOSE: Determination of whether longer symptom duration was associated with worse postoperative disability outcomes after decompressive surgery for lumbar degenerative stenosis. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: The Canadian Spine Outcomes and Research Network (CSORN) prospective database includes pre- and postoperative data from 18

Can a digital intervention 'Momentum' improve social functioning and transdiagnostic symptoms for Australian youth at ultrahigh risk for psychosis? Protocol for a superiority randomised controlled trial comparing treatment as usual with and without Momentum.

INTRODUCTION: Existing psychological and pharmacological interventions for young people at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis have shown benefit in at least delaying the transition to psychosis, but they have limited benefit for comorbid disorders or social dysfunction, which are prominent for those at UHR. We developed a moderated online social therapy platform (named Momentum) including: (1) transdiagnostic therapeutic interventions targeting social functioning, depression, generalised anxiety and social anxiety; (2) a moderated, peer-led online community and (3) specialised human support f

Validation of the Colorado Retinopathy of Prematurity Screening Model.

IMPORTANCE: The Colorado Retinopathy of Prematurity (CO-ROP) model uses birth weight, gestational age, and weight gain at the first month of life (WG-28) to predict risk of severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). In previous validation studies, the model performed very well, predicting virtually all cases of severe ROP and potentially reducing the number of infants who need ROP examinations, warranting validation in a larger, more diverse population. OBJECTIVE: To validate the performance of the CO-ROP model in a large multicenter cohort. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS: This study is a secon
