Gendered time use among specializing medical doctors at Makerere University, Uganda: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research shows that gendered differences in time use unfairly impact women's career advancement and influence workforce management. Despite a growing body of literature on gendered time use, the topic has not been well documented among specializing medical doctors in sub-Saharan African countries, including Uganda. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted among specialist medical doctors at Makerere University to: (i) analyze gendered differences in time use for paid and unpaid activities and (ii) assess whether parenting influences time use. METHODS: The study sample compri

Physical Activity Types and Sarcopenia Components Among Middle-Aged and Older People: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Sarcopenia is a strong predictor of morbidity and mortality in older people, highlighting the need for effective prevention strategies. This study examined how different types of physical activity (PA) relate to sarcopenia and its components. We included 4849 participants (55.8% female, mean age 69.1 ± 8.7 years) from the Rotterdam Study. Sarcopenia was defined following the EWGSOP2 criteria using grip strength (GS) and DXA-derived appendicular lean mass (ALMI). Total PA and its types were categorized into low, moderate, and high tertiles. For activities with participation rates below 60%, the

Dermal inflammatory vascular changes associated with felid alphaherpesvirus 1 dermatitis in cats.

Feline ulcerative dermatitis is an uncommon disease of domestic and wild cats associated with felid alphaherpesvirus 1 (FeAHV1) infection. Here we report dermal inflammatory vascular changes with or without thrombosis in six of eight cats with feline ulcerative dermatitis. Submissions were searched retrospectively from the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory biopsy archives between 2010 and 2025. FeAHV1 infection was confirmed by immunohistochemistry in all cases. The affected cats were five castrated males and three spayed females. Domestic Shorthair cats were affected more often (seven c

Multiple introductions of equine influenza virus into the United Kingdom resulted in widespread outbreaks and lineage replacement.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) are prime examples of emerging viruses in humans and animals. IAV circulation in domestic animals poses a pandemic risk as it provides new opportunities for zoonotic infections. The recent emergence of H5N1 IAV in cows and subsequent spread over multiple states within the USA, together with reports of spillover infections in humans, cats and mice highlight this issue. The horse is a domestic animal in which an avian-origin IAV lineage has been circulating for >60 years. In 2018/19, a Florida Clade 1 (FC1) virus triggered one of the largest epizootics recorded in the

Golden jackals (Canis aureus) as novel hosts for Angiostrongylus vasorum in Romania.

Angiostrongylus vasorum, commonly known as the French heartworm, is a metastrongyloid nematode infecting domestic and wild carnivores. While red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are known as the primary reservoir hosts in Europe, recent studies suggest that golden jackals (Canis aureus) could also be considered as important reservoir hosts. Due to the rapid expansion of golden jackals in Europe, their role in the epidemiology of A. vasorum remains insufficiently explored. This study aimed to assess the occurrence of A. vasorum in golden jackals from Romania. Between October 2013 and November 2024, a tota

A Novel, Safe, Non-Adjuvanted Alphavirus RNA Particle Vaccine Expressing the Rabies Virus Glycoprotein Induces a Three-Year Duration of Immunity in Dogs and Cats After a Single Vaccine Dose.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To this day, rabies remains a significant global threat. This threat remains even with the availability of vaccines for humans, wildlife, and domestic animals, which are used as part of a series of interventions to attempt to control the infection and disease. The number of annual human deaths from rabies globally remains significant, with infections being mainly caused by domestic dogs. Although a number of vaccines exist for domestic animals, most contain inactivated rabies virus with adjuvants. METHODS: To investigate alternatives to conventional rabies vaccines for

Evidence for the long-distance transport of ticks and tick-borne pathogens by human travellers to Texas, USA.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of tick-borne diseases in the USA has surged in recent years, with >50 000 cases reported from an estimated half-million cases annually. While domestic vectors are well characterized, the role of human travel in transporting exotic ticks and pathogens remains poorly understood. METHODS: We analysed 4808 submissions of ticks removed from individuals to the Tick-Borne Disease Research Laboratory in Texas, USA, from 2004 to 2024. Tick species were identified phenotypically or through DNA-based sequencing, and pathogens (Borrelia spp., Rickettsia spp., Ehrlichia spp., An

Detection of Dirofilaria repens and Mansonella llewellyni in the United States by Wolbachia Surveillance.

In mammals, detection of Wolbachia bacteria can be used to diagnose filarial infection, while antibiotic treatment to eliminate Wolbachia can assist in eliminating filarial infections. Because Wolbachia are necessary for survival of several filarioids and closely related to Anaplasma and Ehrlichia, we analyzed Wolbachia DNA amplification by Anaplasma/Ehrlichia qPCR, from 39,526 domestic and wildlife animal blood samples submitted to a diagnostic laboratory between 2017 and 2023. Filarial infection was confirmed by 28S gene amplification, followed by phylogenetic analysis utilizing filarial cyt

A first insight into the occurrence of Leptospira, Brucella and Coxiella burnetii infections in wild mammals rescued from illegal trade in Ecuador: A proxy for one health conservation policies.

Illegal wildlife trade is a major concern not only for conservation and animal welfare but also for public health. Human interaction with wild animals increases the risk of zoonotic disease transmission, while exposure of wildlife to humans and domestic animals poses additional threats to biodiversity through the spread of infectious diseases. This issue is particularly critical in tropical, biodiversity-rich countries like Ecuador, often low- and middle-income nations where resources for conservation are limited. In the absence of official data on illegal wildlife trafficking in Ecuador, seve

Comparative analysis of whole-genome sequences of African swine fever virus (Asfarviridae: Asfivirus) isolates сollected on the territory of the left bank of the Dnieper River in 2023.

INTRODUCTION: The lack of data on the whole-genome sequences of African swine fever virus (ASFV) variants circulating on the territory of the left bank of the Dnieper River complicates the understanding of the molecular evolution of the virus and the character of the epidemic process development in Russia and Ukraine. Understanding the genetic divergence and phylogenetic relatedness of isolates can largely adjust the strategy of general and specific prevention of the disease. The aim of the study - search and description of unique mutations (deletions/insertions/substitutions) in isolates coll

Validation of MICA Legionella for Enumeration of Legionella pneumophila in Sanitary Waters and Cooling Tower Waters: AOAC Performance Tested MethodSM 032201.

BACKGROUND: Frequent testing for Legionella concentration in water is required by most health risk monitoring organizations worldwide. Domestic hot water and cooling tower water networks must be regularly controlled to prevent Legionnaires' disease, a potentially deadly lung infection. MICA Legionella is the fastest culture-based detection method for all serogroups of Legionella pneumophila, with automatic enumeration in 48 h and no need for confirmation. OBJECTIVE: This study compares the performance and robustness of MICA Legionella with the reference method ISO 11731:2017 for the enumerati

A pilot study on dietary and faecal calcium/phosphorus ratios in different types of captive ruminating herbivores.

Quantitative differences in calcium and phosphorus metabolism between domestic species exist and can be visualised using data on calcium and phosphorus intake and faecal excretion. The parameter for analysing the results was defined as Δ = dietary calcium/phosphorus (Ca/P) ratio - faecal Ca/P ratio. In previous studies, hindgut fermenters had significantly higher Δ values than ruminants (sheep, cattle, goats), which was explained by the high calcium digestibilities in hindgut fermenters in contrast to highly efficient phosphorus recycling in ruminants. The first hypothesis of the present study

Diagnostic Approach for Arboviral Infections in the United States.

Domestic arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are single-stranded RNA viruses, the most common of which include the mosquito-borne West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis virus, La Crosse virus, Jamestown Canyon virus, and eastern equine encephalitis virus, as well as the tick-borne Powassan virus. Previously considered rare infections, they have been detected with increasing frequency over the past 2 decades. Here, we present an overview of the domestic arboviruses listed above and describe the modalities employed to diagnose infection. Global arboviruses, including dengue virus, Zika virus,

Determinants of Childhood Zoonotic Enteric Infections in a Semirural Community of Quito, Ecuador.

Domestic animals in the household environment have the potential to affect a child's carriage of zoonotic enteric pathogens and risk of diarrhea. This study examines the risk factors associated with pediatric diarrhea and carriage of zoonotic enteric pathogens among children living in communities where smallholder livestock production is prevalent. We conducted an observational study of children younger than 5 years that included the analysis of child (n = 306) and animal (n = 480) fecal samples for Campylobacter spp., atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, Shiga toxin-producing E. coli,

State Legislators' Opinions About Adverse Childhood Experiences as Risk Factors for Adult Behavioral Health Conditions.

OBJECTIVES: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increase risk of adult behavioral health conditions. State legislators are an important audience to target with evidence about ACEs because they make policy decisions that can prevent ACE exposure and enhance resilience. This study sought to describe state legislators' opinions about ACEs as risk factors for adult behavioral health conditions and identify how opinions vary between legislators with different characteristics. METHODS: A multimodal survey was conducted in 2017 (response rate, 16.4%; N=475). Dependent variables were the extent to w

Molecular survey of neglected bacterial pathogens reveals an abundant diversity of species and genotypes in ticks collected from animal hosts across Romania.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are transmitting a wide range of bacterial pathogens that cause substantial morbidity and mortality in domestic animals. The full pathogen burden transmitted by tick vectors is incompletely studied in many geographical areas, and extensive studies are required to fully understand the diversity and distribution of pathogens transmitted by ticks. RESULTS: We sampled 824 ticks of 11 species collected in 19 counties in Romania. Ticks were collected mainly from dogs, but also from other domestic and wild animals, and were subjected to molecular screening for pathogens. Rickettsia

Population genomics reveals that an anthropophilic population of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in West Africa recently gave rise to American and Asian populations of this major disease vector.

BACKGROUND: The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the main vector of dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever viruses. This major disease vector is thought to have arisen when the African subspecies Ae. aegypti formosus evolved from being zoophilic and living in forest habitats into a form that specialises on humans and resides near human population centres. The resulting domestic subspecies, Ae. aegypti aegypti, is found throughout the tropics and largely blood-feeds on humans. RESULTS: To understand this transition, we have sequenced the exomes of mosquitoes collected from five populations from a

Altered bioenergetics and developmental effects in striped marsh frog (Limnodynastes peronii) tadpoles exposed to UV treated sewage.

Effectively treating domestic wastewater so that it can be safely discharged or reused is critical for maintaining the integrity of freshwater resources, and for protecting the health of animals that rely on these systems. Amphibians are currently facing widespread population declines, so there is a particularly urgent need to investigate exposure scenarios that might result in weakened amphibian populations. Domestic sewage has received little attention as a possible factor that could influence the survival, growth and development, or general health of amphibians. However, wastewater reuse fo

African swine fever virus transmission cycles in Central Europe: Evaluation of wild boar-soft tick contacts through detection of antibodies against Ornithodoros erraticus saliva antigen.

BACKGROUND: African swine fever (ASF) is one of the most complex viral diseases affecting both domestic and wild pigs. It is caused by ASF virus (ASFV), the only DNA virus which can be efficiently transmitted by an arthropod vector, soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros. These ticks can be part of ASFV-transmission cycles, and in Europe, O. erraticus was shown to be responsible for long-term maintenance of ASFV in Spain and Portugal. In 2014, the disease has been reintroduced into the European Union, affecting domestic pigs and, importantly, also the Eurasian wild boar population. In a first at
