A ganglion cyst is a noncancerous, fluid-filled swelling that usually forms near joints or tendons, with the wrist and hand being the most common locations. These cysts can range in size from small, pea-sized bumps to larger formations similar to the size of a golf ball, and their texture may vary from firm to spongy. Smaller cysts can be asymptomatic and are usually round or spherical in shape. The skin over the cyst may appear stretched and shiny. Ganglion cysts contain a mucoid, gel-like material rich in mucopolysaccharides. Some cysts occur intratendinously, extending deep into the underly

Ulnar impaction syndrome (UIS), also known as ulnar impaction or ulnar abutment, is a degenerative condition causing pain on the ulnar side of the wrist. It can lead to wrist bone necrosis, resulting in wrist joint stability disruption and a significant wrist function impairment. The global understanding of this condition varies, contributing to substantial differences in clinical outcomes. In collaboration with the Asian Pacific Wrist Association (APWA), a team of experts from various fields within the Hand Surgery Department at Huashan Hospital Fudan University has collectively formulated th

Hand grip strength (HGS) is a well-established measure of musculoskeletal function and integrity of the upper limb. Traditionally used in rehabilitation, its utility extends too many clinical conditions in primary care practice. Therefore, it is of interest to explore the diverse applications of HGS in medical practice. In osteoporosis, HGS predicts bone density and risk of fracture. In osteoarthritis, it serves as a benchmark for functional impairment. As a nutritional marker, HGS reflects malnutrition and predicts postoperative outcomes. In metabolic syndrome and chronic diseases, HGS relate

Fingertip injury is the most common type of upper extremity injury. Operative treatment with flap cover is required for tissue loss causing bone exposure and when there is a compelling need to preserve the length, unless microvascular replantation is possible. There are many techniques described for this purpose offering varying degrees of good outcomes. Yet there are limitations and long-term problems. We report a case series with a novel technique named "Colombo flap," which is a neurovascular islanded advancement flap based on a single pedicle. Five fingers of four consented patients were o

Phosphonates and bisphosphonates are stable analogs of phosphates and pyrophosphates that are characterized by one and two carbon-phosphorus bonds, respectively. Among the various phosphonates and bisphosphonates, hydroxy and amino substitutes are of interest as effective in medicinal and industrial chemistry. For example, hydroxy bisphosphonates have proven to be effective for the prevention of bone loss, especially in osteoporotic disease. On the other hand, different substitutions on the carbon atom connected to phosphorus have led to the synthesis of many different hydroxy- and amino-phosp

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease showed that persistent inflammation in the joints, induces the cartilage destruction, bone erosion, and leukocyte infiltration in the synovium. RA mostly affects the joints of hands, feet, wrists, ankles, and knees. Each year, approximately 20-40 new cases are reported per lac population and the disease affects women more than men. The etiology of RA is still unknown, but many pathways have been identified as potential targets in its pathophysiology, including the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, NF-κB signaling, Adenosine signaling, Wnt, SY

14q22q23 microdeletion syndrome, also called Frias syndrome, is an extremely rare partial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 14 characterized by the anomalies of the pituitary gland, eyes, and hand/foot. Intellectual disability and facial dysmorphism are other common manifestations. Haploinsufficiency of the genes bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) and orthodenticle homeobox 2 (OTX2) accounts for most of the phenotypic abnormalities seen in these patients. There are only a few cases reported with Frias syndrome in the literature, and there are multiple variations present, which are not we

We studied the age-related characteristics of the response of stem cells and liver in male Wistar rats to administration of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and ethanol. It was shown that modeling of liver cirrhosis caused inflammation, fibrosis, damage to sinusoidal capillaries, necrosis, and disturbances in the functional activity of hepatocytes in young rats. These processes were accompanied by mobilization of profibrotic mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), proinflammatory hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) and lymphocytes (CD45hiCD133+) from the bone marrow into the blood and migration to the liver. Spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx is a rare, aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma. It comprises 0.6-1.5% of all laryngeal cancers. Heterologous mesenchymal differentiation as bone, cartilage, and muscle is uncommon, especially malignant osteoid differentiation, as a handful of cases reported in the literature. We present the case of a 66-year-old male active smoker who presented with dysphonia and acute stridor. On examination, a 2.0 cm pedunculated, broad-base, glottic mass involving the left true vocal cord and ventricle was noted, with extension to the anterior com

Myositis ossificans (MO) is a rare, benign ossifying lesion characterized by focal formation of heterotopic bone and cartilage in extraskeletal soft-tissue that most commonly occurs in young adults. In most cases, no causative factor can be identified. The diagnosis of MO is usually based on the patient's history of trauma, clinical signs, on imaging appearance and histological examination. We present a non-traumatic MO case of the forearm in a 40-year-old man with weakness in left finger motion, a decrease in prehension for more than three weeks, without any weight loss, malaise, anorexia or

Thrombocytopenia is a frequent occurrence in a variety of hematopoietic diseases; however, the details of the mechanism leading to low platelet count remain elusive. Megakaryocytes are a series of progenitor cells responsible for the production of platelets. Alterations in megakaryocytes in the bone marrow are a causative factor resulting in thrombocytopenia in varied diseases. Based on ultrastructural analysis of incidentally encountered megakaryocytes in 43 patients with blood diseases marked by low platelet counts, electron micrographs demonstrated that aberrant megakaryocytes predominated

Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), also called Müllerian inhibiting substance, was shown to be synthesized by the ovary in the 1980s. This article reviews the main findings of the past 20 years on the regulation of the expression of AMH and its specific receptor AMHR2 by granulosa cells, the mechanism of action of AMH, the different roles it plays in the reproductive organs, its clinical utility, and its involvement in the principal pathological conditions affecting women. The findings in respect of regulation tell us that AMH and AMHR2 expression is mainly regulated by bone morphogenetic proteins,

Structural damage progression in patients with established rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has traditionally been assessed by conventional radiography (CR), which has proven its value in clinical practice and clinical trials over the past decades. The most prominent abnormalities visualized by CR in RA patients are erosions as a consequence of bone destruction and joint space narrowing (JSN) as a consequence of cartilage damage. Several validated scoring systems to quantify the structural joint damage and progression herein are available. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are newer,

Trigger finger is stenosing tenosynovitis that occurs in A1 pulley. It usually occurs idiopathically in patients' 40s and 50s. On the other hand, pediatric trigger finger usually occurs before 8 years old in pediatric patients. Even though being rare, a tumor occurred in the soft tissue or bone near flexor tendons can cause a trigger finger. Trigger finger due to osteochondroma is very rare. Furthermore, most cases of trigger finger due to osteochondroma occur in pediatric patients with hereditary multiple osteochondromatosis (HMO). The authors report this case of a trigger finger caused by a

We report the case of a 46-year-old woman who struck her right elbow on the ground after a fall on ice. Radiography showed a right humeral capitellar fracture, and CT further confirmed a Dubberley type 1A fracture. Closed reduction was performed under local anaesthesia, and an anatomical position was obtained. After the reduction, her right elbow was casted for 18 days. Three months after the injury, bone union was achieved without displacement, and the active range of motion of her right elbow recovered similar to the unaffected side. At 1 year postinjury, the Grantham score was excellent, an

Floating-Harbor Syndrome (FHS; OMIM #136140) is an ultra-rare autosomal dominant genetic condition characterized by expressive language delay, short stature with delayed bone mineralization, a triangular face with a prominent nose, and deep-set eyes, and hand anomalies. First reported in 1973, FHS is associated with mutations in the SRCAP gene, which encodes SNF2-related CREBBP activator protein. Mutations in the CREBBP gene cause Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome (RSTS; OMIM #180849, #613684), another rare disease characterized by broad thumbs and halluces, facial dysmorphisms, short stature, and int

We reported a 30 years old man who suffered a bite wound of the right hand in a fight. Two days after the injury, he was admitted in emergency because of stab wound above the head of the third metacarpal bone. He presented the swelling, redness, pain and fever. Primary revision confirmed only partial lesion of the extensor apparatus. During the following days, we recorded a deterioration of local findings and magnetic resonance imaging revealed osteomyelitis and septic arthritis of the thirdmetacarpophalangeal joint. The wound was then revised several times using negative pressure wound therap

Vitamin D endocrine system is required for normal calcium and bone homeostasis. Trans-epithelial calcium absorption is initiated with calcium entry into the intestinal epithelial cells from luminal fluid through calcium permeable channels, and those expressions are strongly supported by vitamin D action. On the other hands, dietary treatment, mineral supplementation or restriction, successfully improves intestinal calcium absorption in global vitamin D receptor knock-out (VDR KO) mice, though vitamin D dependent active transport pathway is lacking. Dietary rescue of intestinal calcium absorpti
