Diffusion tensor imaging and tractography of the kidney in children: feasibility and preliminary experience.

BACKGROUND: Functional magnetic resonance urography (fMRU) provides morphological and functional information based on perfusion. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) complements fMRU by measuring renal microstructure and provides insight into the relationship between renal structure and function. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility and utility of renal DTI and tractography in the setting of fMRU in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 9 children (6 boys, 3 girls) with a mean age of 4.3 years (range 6 months to 14.8 years). All children were examined with MRI at 3.0 tesla.

Hemodynamic volumetry using transpulmonary ultrasound dilution (TPUD) technology in a neonatal animal model.

To analyze changes in cardiac output and hemodynamic volumes using transpulmonary ultrasound dilution (TPUD) in a neonatal animal model under different hemodynamic conditions. 7 lambs (3.5-8.3 kg) under general anesthesia received arterial and central venous catheters. A Gore-Tex(®) shunt was surgically inserted between the descending aorta and the left pulmonary artery to mimic a patent ductus arteriosus. After shunt opening and closure, induced hemorrhagic hypotension (by repetitive blood withdrawals) and repetitive volume challenges, the following parameters were assessed using TPUD: cardia

MR-based morphometry of the posterior fossa in fetuses with neural tube defects of the spine.

OBJECTIVES: In cases of "spina bifida," a detailed prenatal imaging assessment of the exact morphology of neural tube defects (NTD) is often limited. Due to the diverse clinical prognosis and prenatal treatment options, imaging parameters that support the prenatal differentiation between open and closed neural tube defects (ONTDs and CNTDs) are required. This fetal MR study aims to evaluate the clivus-supraocciput angle (CSA) and the maximum transverse diameter of the posterior fossa (TDPF) as morphometric parameters to aid in the reliable diagnosis of either ONTDs or CNTDs. METHODS: The TDPF

Long term cortical plasticity in visual retinotopic areas in humans with silent retinal ganglion cell loss.

Visual cortical plasticity induced by overt retinal lesions (scotomas) has remained a controversial phenomenon. Here we studied cortical plasticity in a silent model of retinal ganglion cell loss, documented by in vivo optical biopsy using coherence tomography. The cortical impact of non-scotomatous subtle retinal ganglion cell functional and structural loss was investigated in carriers of the mitochondrial DNA 11778G>A mutation causing Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure cortical thickness and fMRI to define retinotopic cortical visual area

The carotid artery as an alternative site to the middle cerebral artery for reproducible estimates of autoregulation index.

Temporal insonation is not always possible for the middle cerebral artery (MCA) for blood flow velocity (BFV) measurements, to estimate cerebral autoregulation. We compared BFV and cerebral autoregulation estimates from the common-carotid (CCA) and internal-carotid arteries (ICA) with the MCA. BFV was measured at the CCA, ICA and MCA, synchronously with blood pressure, heart rate and end-tidal CO2 and was recorded onto a data acquisition system. The autoregulation index (ARI) estimated using the Tiecks model. Eleven healthy volunteers (7 women, 33 ± 9 years old) were recruited. BFVs in the MCA

Angular craniometry in craniocervical junction malformation.

The craniometric linear dimensions of the posterior fossa have been relatively well studied, but angular craniometry has been poorly studied and may reveal differences in the several types of craniocervical junction malformation. The objectives of this study were to evaluate craniometric angles compared with normal subjects and elucidate the main angular differences among the types of craniocervical junction malformation and the correlation between craniocervical and cervical angles. Angular craniometries were studied using primary cranial angles (basal and Boogard's) and secondary craniocervi

The contribution of strain patterns in characterization of prostate peripheral zone lesions at transrectal ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: Elasticity is an important characteristic of tissue. During an elastography examination, various strain images of lesions are observed, and a suitable classification of strain patterns (SP) may provide vital diagnostic information about lesions. Numerous studies have shown that ultrasound elastography can improve the detection of prostate cancer, but the diagnostic value of SP classification has not yet been fully evaluated. PURPOSE: To investigate the contribution of SP on the characterization of prostate peripheral zone lesions by transrectal real-time tissue elastography (TRTE)

Identifying the default-mode component in spatial IC analyses of patients with disorders of consciousness.

OBJECTIVES: Recent fMRI studies have shown that it is possible to reliably identify the default-mode network (DMN) in the absence of any task, by resting-state connectivity analyses in healthy volunteers. We here aimed to identify the DMN in the challenging patient population of disorders of consciousness encountered following coma. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: A spatial independent component analysis-based methodology permitted DMN assessment, decomposing connectivity in all its different sources either neuronal or artifactual. Three different selection criteria were introduced assessing anticorrela

Left atrial electromechanical conduction time can predict six-month maintenance of sinus rhythm after electrical cardioversion in persistent atrial fibrillation by Doppler tissue echocardiography.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine whether atrial electromechanical conduction time (EMT) measured by echocardiography can predict 6-month maintenance of sinus rhythm (SR) after electrical cardioversion in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: Fifty-three patients with persistent AF (>1 month) who had successful cardioversion and 30 controls with SR were prospectively enrolled. SR maintenance was assessed during 6-month follow-up. EMT was measured as the time interval from the onset of the P wave on electrocardiography to the peak of the late diastolic wave from

Abnormal functional specialization within medial prefrontal cortex in high-functioning autism: a multi-voxel similarity analysis.

Multi-voxel pattern analyses have proved successful in 'decoding' mental states from fMRI data, but have not been used to examine brain differences associated with atypical populations. We investigated a group of 16 (14 males) high-functioning participants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 16 non-autistic control participants (12 males) performing two tasks (spatial/verbal) previously shown to activate medial rostral prefrontal cortex (mrPFC). Each task manipulated: (i) attention towards perceptual versus self-generated information and (ii) reflection on another person's mental state ('m

In-vivo examples of flow patterns with the fast vector velocity ultrasound method.

PURPOSE: Conventional ultrasound methods for acquiring color flow images of the blood motion are limited by a relatively low frame rate and are restricted to only giving velocity estimates along the ultrasound beam direction. To circumvent these limitations, the Plane Wave Excitation (PWE) method has been proposed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The PWE method can estimate the 2D vector velocity of the blood with a high frame rate. Vector velocity estimates are acquired by using the following approach: The ultrasound is not focused during the ultrasound transmission, and a full speckle image of the bl

Wireless capsule endoscopy color video segmentation.

This paper describes the use of color image analysis to automatically discriminate between oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, and colon tissue in wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE). WCE uses "pill-cam" technology to recover color video imagery from the entire gastrointestinal tract. Accurately reviewing and reporting this data is a vital part of the examination, but it is tedious and time consuming. Automatic image analysis tools play an important role in supporting the clinician and speeding up this process. Our approach first divides the WCE image into subimages and rejects all subimages in

Cerebral cortex and the clinical expression of Huntington's disease: complexity and heterogeneity.

The clinical phenotype of Huntington's disease (HD) is far more complex and variable than depictions of it as a progressive movement disorder dominated by neostriatal pathology represent. The availability of novel neuro-imaging methods has enabled us to evaluate cerebral cortical changes in HD, which we have found to occur early and to be topographically selective. What is less clear, however, is how these changes influence the clinical expression of the disease. In this study, we used a high-resolution surface based analysis of in vivo MRI data to measure cortical thickness in 33 individuals
