Syndromic (phenotypic) diarrhea in early infancy.

Syndromic diarrhea (SD), also known as phenotypic diarrhea (PD) or tricho-hepato-enteric syndrome (THE), is a congenital enteropathy presenting with early-onset of severe diarrhea requiring parenteral nutrition (PN). To date, no epidemiological data are available. The estimated prevalence is approximately 1/300,000-400,000 live births in Western Europe. Ethnic origin does not appear to be associated with SD. Infants are born small for gestational age and present with facial dysmorphism including prominent forehead and cheeks, broad nasal root and hypertelorism. Hairs are woolly, easily removed

Histopathological observations in new and classic models of experimental Schistosoma haematobium infections.

The authors present marsh rat Holochilus brasiliensis, jirds Meriones shawi and M. unguiculatus as new models of Schistosoma haematobium infection. Histological findings were compared with those of classic models mouse Mus and hamster Mesocricetus. In new models, embryonated eggs were seen in the stool from 90 days post infestation (DPI) and active disease developed from 117 to 175 DPI. Seven out of 10 rodents presented granulomatous and/or chronic cystitis, fibrosis, polyps and urothelial changes: squamous metaplasia, precancerous dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Correlation of Trichoscopic Findings in Androgenetic Alopecia and the Disease Severity.

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) refers to the appearance of the common nonscarring progressive patterned loss of terminal hair on the frontal scalp and/or vertex of the scalp in both men and women, seen with increasing age in genetically predisposed individuals. Until recently, a scalp biopsy was the only objective tool to diagnose and monitor the disease severity. Trichoscopy of scalp is a new noninvasive technique applied to facilitate the diagnosis of hair and scalp disorders using a manual or video dermatoscope. We found a significant difference in some of the variables such as bro

Synthesis of cinnamic amide derivatives and their anti-melanogenic effect in α-MSH-stimulated B16F10 melanoma cells.

Of the three enzymes that regulate the biosynthesis of melanin, tyrosinase and its related proteins TYRP-1 and TYRP-2, tyrosinase is the most important because of its ability to limit the rate of melanin production in melanocytes. For treating skin pigmentation disorders caused by an excess of melanin, the inhibition of tyrosinase enzyme is by far the most established strategy. Cinnamic acid is a safe natural product with an (E)-β-phenyl-α,β-unsaturated carbonyl motif that we have previously shown to play an important role in high tyrosinase inhibition. Since cinnamic acid is relatively hydrop…

Absent meibomian glands and cone dystrophy in ADULT syndrome: identification by whole exome sequencing of pathogenic variants in two causal genes TP63 and CNGB3.

BACKGROUND: Ectrodactyly is a rare congenital limb malformation characterized by a deep median cleft of the hand and/or foot due to the absence of central rays. It could be isolated or depicts a part of diverse syndromic forms. Heterozygous pathogenic variants in the TP63 gene are responsible for at least four rare syndromic human disorders associated with ectrodactyly. Among them, ADULT (Acro-Dermato-Ungual-Lacrimal-Tooth) syndrome is characterized by ectodermal dysplasia, excessive freckling, nail dysplasia, and lacrimal duct obstruction, in addition to ectrodactyly and/or syndactyly. Ophtha

Congenital Hypopigmentary Disorders with Multiorgan Impairment: A Case Report and an Overview on Gray Hair Syndromes.

The term congenital hypopigmentary disorders refers to a wide group of heterogeneous hereditary diseases, clinically characterized by inborn pigmentary defects of the iris, hair, and/or skin. They include Gray Hair Syndromes (GHSs), a rare group of autosomal recessive genodermatosis hallmarked by inborn silvery gray hair. GHSs encompass Griscelli, Chediak⁻Higashi, Elejalde, and Cross syndromes, which are all characterized by a broad spectrum of severe multisystem disorders, including neurological, ocular, skeletal, and immune system impairment. In this manuscript, we describe in detail the cli

Khat (Catha edulis) and its oral health effects: An updated review.

Khat or qat (Catha edulis) is a plant that grows in East Africa and southern Arabia. The leaves and twigs of this small tree are chewed by several millions of people worldwide for their stimulating amphetamine-like effects. The reported prevalence of khat chewing in Europe and the USA is on the rise, especially with global migration. Long-term khat chewing has several detrimental general and oral health effects. The aim of the present study was to review the current literature regarding khat use and its association with oral and dental diseases, with particular emphasis on its link with oral k

Cellular and clinical report of new Griscelli syndrome type III cases.

The RAB27A/Melanophilin/Myosin-5a tripartite protein complex is required for capturing mature melanosomes in the peripheral actin network of melanocytes for subsequent transfer to keratinocytes. Mutations in any one member of this tripartite complex cause three forms of Griscelli syndrome (GS), each with distinct clinical features but with a similar cellular phenotype. To date, only one case of GS type III (GSIII), caused by mutations in the Melanophilin (MLPH) gene, has been reported. Here, we report seven new cases of GSIII in three distinct Arab pedigrees. All affected individuals carried a

Objective assessment of dermatitis following post-operative radiotherapy in patients with breast cancer treated with breast-conserving treatment.

PURPOSE: To evaluate radiation dermatitis objectively in patients with breast cancer who had undergone post-operative radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Skin color (L*, a*, and b* values) and moisture analyses were performed for both breasts (before, after, 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year after radiotherapy) to examine irradiated and non-irradiated skin divided into four quadrants in 118 patients. These patients underwent breast conservative surgery followed by 50 Gy/25 fractions (median) of radiotherapy with or without boost irradiation (10 Gy/5 fractions). RE

[Clinical features and pathogenesis of Carney complex, a rare form of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes].

Carney-complex is the rarest and most recently described form of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes that is unique both from clinical and pathogenetic aspects. Clinical features include spotty skin pigmentation, cutaneous and cardiac myxomas, multiple endocrine abnormalities and schwannomas. The most characteristic endocrine abnormality is primary pigmented nodular adrenal hyperplasia that may result in clinically apparent Cushing's syndrome. Acromegaly, hyperprolactinaemia, tumours of the testis and ovaries have also been described. Approximately fifty percent of Carney-complex cases are

PRKAR1A mutations in primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease.

Primary Pigmented Nodular Adrenocortical Disease (PPNAD) is a rare primary bilateral adrenal defect causing corticotropin-independent Cushing's syndrome. It occurs mainly in children and young adults. Macroscopic appearance of the adrenals is characteristic with small pigmented micronodules observed in the cortex. PPNAD is most often diagnosed in patients with Carney complex (CNC), but it can also be observed in patients without other manifestations or familial history (isolated PPNAD). The CNC is an autosomal dominant multiple neoplasia syndrome characterized by the association of myxoma, spo

Comparison between the histopathological and immunophenotypical features of hypopigmented and nonhypopigmented mycosis fungoides: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Mycosis fungoides (MF), the commonest primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, has classic and variant types which include hypopigmented MF (HMF). Previous studies have identified distinct clinicopathological profiles in HMF. This study aims to objectively compare the clinicopathological features of HMF with non-HMF lesions in order to characterize salient features of HMF. METHODS: This cross-sectional, retrospective study analyzed biopsy specimens of 87 patients with MF. HMF and non-HMF groups were compared using clinical data, immunophenotypic features and scores given for six histopa

Vitiligo-like depigmentation in oncology patients treated with immunotherapies for nonmelanoma metastatic cancers.

Vitiligo-like depigmentation (VLD) is a characteristic cutaneous event described in patients with metastatic malignant melanoma receiving treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors. We report the onset of VLD in three patients with other cancer types (cholangiocarcinoma, renal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) following treatment with immunotherapy (combination pembrolizumab and nivolumab for the first, and pembrolizumab for the other two cancer types). Cases of VLD have not been reported previously in patients treated for any of these cancers, to our knowledge. Pembrolizumab and ni

Association of premature hair graying with family history, smoking, and obesity: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Many researchers have been concerned about the association of hair graying with systemic diseases. However, the common factors associated with hair graying and systemic diseases have not been elucidated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify risk factors for premature hair graying (PHG) in young men. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using questionnaires in young men. After a pilot study that included 1069 men, we surveyed 6390 men younger than 30 years about their gray hair status and various socioclinical characteristics. RESULTS: The age of participants in the m

Clinical features distinguish eosinophilic and reflux-induced esophagitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Diagnosing eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) depends on intraepithelial eosinophil count of ≥15 eosinophils per high-power field (HPF); however, differentiating EoE from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) continues to be a challenge because no true "criterion standard" criteria exist. Identifying clinical and endoscopic characteristics that distinguish EoE could provide a more comprehensive diagnostic strategy than the present criteria. The aim of the study was to determine symptoms and signs that can be used to distinguish EoE from reflux esophagitis. METHODS: Adu
