Chronic lung disease, also known as bronchopulmonary dysplasia, affects thousands of infants worldwide each year. The impact on resources is second only to bronchial asthma, with lung function affected well into adolescence. Diagnostic and therapeutic constructs have almost exclusively focused on pulmonary architecture (alveoli/airways) and pulmonary hypertension. Information on systemic hemodynamics indicates major artery thickness/stiffness, elevated systemic afterload, and/or primary left ventricular dysfunction may play a part in a subset of infants with severe neonatal-pediatric lung dise

BACKGROUND: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a life-threatening heart disease and a common cause of heart failure due to systolic dysfunction and subsequent left or biventricular dilatation. A significant number of cases have a genetic etiology; however, as a complex disease, the exact genetic risk factors are largely unknown, and many patients remain without a molecular diagnosis.
METHODS: We performed GWAS followed by whole-genome, transcriptome, and immunohistochemical analyses in a spontaneously occurring canine model of DCM. Canine gene discovery was followed up in three human DCM cohorts

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by systolic dysfunction and is usually idiopathic. A rare cause of reversible DCM is hypocalcemia. Calcium plays a key role in myocardial contraction. Hypocalcemia can lead to a decrease in contraction, left ventricular systolic dysfunction, and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (EF). Hypocalcemia-related reversible DCM reports are rare. Herein, we present two cases with heart failure caused by hypocalcemia developed due to hypoparathyroidism. The first case presented with severe heart failure and an extremely low serum calcium level (4.

Speckle tracking echocardiography enables the detection of subclinical left ventricular dysfunction at rest in many heart diseases and potentially in severe liver diseases. It could also possibly serve as a predictor for survival. In this study, 117 patients evaluated for liver transplantation in a single center between May 2010 and April 2016 with normal left ventricular ejection fraction were included according to clinical characteristics of their liver disease: (1) compensated (n = 29), (2) clinically significant portal hypertension (n = 49), and (3) decompensated (n = 39). Standard echocar

Takotsubo syndrome is a recently recognized acute cardiac disease entity with a clinical presentation resembling that of an acute coronary syndrome. The typical takotsubo syndrome patient has a unique circumferential left (bi-) ventricular contraction abnormality profile that extends beyond a coronary artery supply territory and appears to follow the anatomical cardiac sympathetic innervation. The syndrome predominantly affects postmenopausal women and is often preceded by emotional or physical stress. Patients with predisposing factors such as malignancy and other chronic comorbidities are mo

Degenerative mitral valve regurgitation (MR) is the one of the most frequent valvular heart conditions in the Western world and is increasingly recognized as an important preventable cause of chronic heart failure. This condition also represents the most common indication for mitral surgery and is of particular interest because the mitral valve can be repaired in most patients with very low surgical risk. Historical single-center studies have supported the performance of "early mitral valve repair" in asymptomatic patients with severe degenerative MR to normalize survival and improve late outc

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is reversible left ventricular dysfunction and apical ballooning resembling acute myocardial infarction. Although Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a well-known complication of subarachnoid hemorrhage, it is rare in patients with acute cerebral infarction. We reviewed the findings of thirty previously published cases with both Takotsubo cardiomyopathy and cerebral infarction. These cases were divided into three groups (A-C) according to etiology. A; Dysfunction of central autonomic network associated with cerebral infarction caused Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, B; Left ventricul

Cardiovascular problems are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Hypertension is a common early symptom of ADPKD, and occurs in approximately 60% of patients before renal function has become impaired. Hypertension is associated with an increased rate of progression to end-stage renal disease and is the most important potentially treatable variable in ADPKD. Left ventricular hypertrophy, which is a powerful, independent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, also occurs frequently in patients with ADPKD.

Fabry's disease is a rare lysosomal storage disease caused by the X-linked defect of the enzyme alpha-galactosidase A leading to the intracellular accumulation of glycosphingolipids in various organs and tissues. Cardiac involvement is frequent and, in individuals with some residual enzyme activity, may be the sole manifestation of the disease. Hemizygous men are generally more seriously affected than heterozygous women. The dominant cardiac manifestations include myocardial hypertrophy of the left ventricle, which, in some patients, mimics hypertrophic cardiomypathy. Left ventricular systolic

BACKGROUND: Primary aldosteronism is a common cause of resistant hypertension. Patients with primary aldosteronism due to aldosterone-producing adenoma are generally treated with unilateral adrenalectomy or medical therapy. Superselective adrenal arterial embolization is an alternative treatment for patients with unilateral primary aldosteronism.
CASE SUMMARY: We present a 39-year-old male patient with a 5-year history of primary aldosteronism and secondary hypertension. The patient refused adrenalectomy while accepted pharmacotherapy. Despite taking adequate dose of spironolactone, the patie

Chronic diabetes is associated with ventricular dysfunctions in the absence of hypertension and coronary artery diseases. This condition is termed as diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). There is no favourable treatment available for the management of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Recent studies have reported increase in circulating thrombin level among diabetic patients which is responsible for hypercoagulability of blood. Thrombin induces inflammation and fibrosis, and enhances cardiac cell growth and contractility in vitro. In this study, we have investigated the effects of argatroban; a direct thromb

BACKGROUND: Interpreting N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is challenging due to reduced renal clearance and frequent cardiovascular comorbidities. This study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of NT-proBNP for identifying reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF < 50%) across different CKD stages.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 840 patients with CKD Stages 3-5. Patients were categorized into reduced ejection fraction (REF, LVEF < 50%; n = 114) and preserved ejection fraction (PEF, LVEF ≥ 50%; n = 726) groups. Diagn

BACKGROUND: Mitral annular disjunction (MAD) is an anatomical anomaly increasingly recognized for its association with myocardial fibrosis and malignant arrhythmias. Identifying predictors of this fibrosis is crucial for risk stratification. This study aimed to define the functional and morphological predictors of left ventricular (LV) fibrosis in patients with MAD using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR).
METHODS: In a retrospective single-center study, 60 patients with CMR-confirmed MAD were evaluated. Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) was used to identify LV fibrosis, categorizing pa
