OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the role of the acoustic stapedius reflex in the protection of speech recognition from the upward spread of masking arising from low-frequency background noise.
DESIGN: Speech recognition scores were measured for nine control participants (19-34 years) and six patients with transected stapedius tendons poststapedotomy (39-57 years) as a function of the amplitude of a low-frequency masker, presented at nominal signal to noise ratios of +5 dB, -5 dB, and -15 dB. All participants had pure-tone hearing thresholds in the normal range. Continuou

OBJECTIVES: Although reduced stress is thought to be one of the most deviant speech dimensions in hypokinetic dysarthria associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), the mechanisms of stress production in PD have not been thoroughly explored by objective methods. The aim of the present study was to quantify the effect of PD on prosodic characteristics and to describe contrastive stress patterns in parkinsonian speech.
METHODS: The ability of 20 male speakers with early PD and 16 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HCs) to signal contrastive stress was investigated. Each participant was ins

OBJECTIVES: This study characterized the relationship between relative fundamental frequency (RFF) and listeners' perceptions of vocal effort and overall spasmodic dysphonia severity in the voices of 19 individuals with adductor spasmodic dysphonia.
METHODS: Twenty inexperienced listeners evaluated the vocal effort and overall severity of voices using visual analog scales. The squared correlation coefficients (R2) between average vocal effort and overall severity and RFF measures were calculated as a function of the number of acoustic instances used for the RFF estimate (from 1 to 9, of a tot

OBJECTIVES: Presbyacusis, one of the most common ailments of the elderly, is often treated with hearing aids, which serve to reintroduce some or all of those sounds lost to peripheral hearing loss. However, little is known about the underlying changes to the ear and brain as a result of such experience with sound late in life. The present study attempts to model this process by rearing aged CBA mice in an augmented acoustic environment (AAE).
DESIGN: Aged (22-23 months) male (n = 12) and female (n = 9) CBA/CaJ mice were reared in either 6 weeks of low-level (70 dB SPL) broadband noise stimula

Most echolocating bats exhibit a strong correlation between body size and the frequency of maximum energy in their echolocation calls (peak frequency), with smaller species using signals of higher frequency than larger ones. Size-signal allometry or acoustic detection constraints imposed on wavelength by preferred prey size have been used to explain this relationship. Here we propose the hypothesis that smaller bats emit higher frequencies to achieve directional sonar beams, and that variable beam width is critical for bats. Shorter wavelengths relative to the size of the emitter translate int

This is the first report of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) presenting as a cerebellopontine angle mass. The clinical presentation, investigation and management of this case, as well as the confusion and dilemma caused, are discussed. We hope to increase awareness on the multifaceted ways in which recurrent NPC could present and to share the lessons learnt from our management of this unusual and unfortunate case.

BACKGROUND: To determine levels of exposure to noise during urgent medical transportation by road and to describe the perception of hearing function impairment in workers and the use of hearing protection devices.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational study was performed in Bizkaia (Spain). The instantaneous maximum noise levels (L(peak)) and its continuous equivalents (L(eq)) were recorded through sonometric dosimetries, measured in a "sample ambulance" of the emergency network. In parallel, a survey was conducted on a representative sample of 127 workers in which self-reported hearing loss

OBJECTIVE: Combined electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) is a therapeutic option for patients with severe to profound mid- and high-frequency hearing loss while low-frequency hearing is mostly unaffected. The present study investigates bimodal pitch matching in EAS users as a function of the angular placement of electrodes. Results are compared with data obtained from previous pitch matching studies. Knowledge of electric and acoustic pitch mapping may be important for effective fitting to control the frequency range of acoustic and electric processing.
DESIGN: Pitch adjustment experiments wer

Languages where phonation type and tone are contrastive make use of extremely fine and controlled actions of laryngeal structures; hence, there is little opportunity to variation in either phonation or pitch. Nonetheless, many American Indian languages have contrastive nonmodal phonation, which, moreover, is subject to a great deal of variation. There are a few studies addressing the phonetics of nonmodal phonation in American Indian languages, and little is known about the phonetics/phonology interface of laryngeal features within the sound patterns of these languages. This article aims to co

Crocodilians and birds are the modern representatives of Phylum Archosauria. Although there have been recent advances in our understanding of the phylogeny and ecology of ancient archosaurs like dinosaurs, it still remains a challenge to obtain reliable information about their behaviour. The comparative study of birds and crocodiles represents one approach to this interesting problem. One of their shared behavioural features is the use of acoustic communication, especially in the context of parental care. Although considerable data are available for birds, information concerning crocodilians i

A variety of surgical approaches are available in the management of acoustic neuroma. Each procedure has certain advantages and disadvantages in terms of surgical exposure, the capability of preserving cranial nerve function, and postoperative morbidity. This article advocates tailoring the operative approach to each acoustic neuroma according to its size, location, and clinical manifestations.

The retrosigmoid technique has evolved from the traditional suboccipital operation and, when combined with removal of the posterior wall of the internal auditory canal (IAC), affords a wide exposure of the cerebellopontine angle. This approach may be used for acoustic neuromas of all sizes, from intracanalicular, to more than 4 cm from the porus acusticus. Hearing preservation may be attempted and is generally successful in a substantial minority of cases. The facial nerve is readily visualized at the lateral end of the IAC and is at no greater risk than in the translabyrinthine operation. The

In the present study we reviewed our long-term experience with radiosurgery for intracanalicular acoustic neuromas. The study involved 25 patients with unilateral intracanalicular acoustic neuromas. The treatment volume was 0.07 to 0.8 cm(3) (median: 0.27 cm(3)). The marginal radiation dose used for treatment was 12 Gy for all patients. The follow-up period ranged from 36 to 132 months (mean: 89 months). The actuarial rate of tumour growth control at 5 and 10 years after radiosurgery was 96%. Hearing preservation was achieved in 16 patients (64%) and improvement (>20 dB relative to presurgical
