BACKGROUND: Nonagenarians represent a cohort of patients at high or prohibitive risk in case of complex aortic procedures. A hybrid approach could reduce the surgical risk compared with a conventional surgery when performed at the age of 90.
CASE SUMMARY: We reported the case of a 90-year-old man who presented with a progressive aortic arch dilatation due to a persistent type-1A endoleak following previous thoracic endovascular aortic repair due to type-B aortic dissection. The aortic computed tomography scan confirmed a 65 × 67 mm aortic arch dilatation due to a type-1A endoleak and a transt

This study introduces a novel hybrid model for accurate CO2 emissions prediction, supporting sustainable decision-making. The model integrates the Gaussian mutation and shrink mechanism-based moth flame optimization (GMSMFO) algorithm with an extreme learning machine (ELM). GMSMFO enhances population diversity and avoids local optima through Gaussian mutation (GM), while the shrink mechanism (SM) improves exploration-exploitation balance. Validated on the congress on evolutionary computation (CEC2020) benchmark suite (dimensions 30 and 50), GMSMFO demonstrated superior performance compared to

BACKGROUND: Lupus nephritis (LN) flares raise the risks of renal failure and mortality in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, making risk stratification and individualized care crucial. Our goal was to develop machine learning (ML) models to predict LN flares.
METHODS: A total of 1546 SLE patients were enrolled from a hospital-based cohort. Electronic health record (EHR), single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), and polygenic risk score (PRS) were combined to construct ML models. SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) values were calculated to assess each feature's contribution.

BACKGROUND: The standard of care for placement of a central venous catheter (CVC) includes a real-time ultrasound (US)-guided technique. We describe a rare case in which the guidewire penetrated the posterior wall of the vessel, forming a knot, which precluded simple removal. This occurred despite the procedure being performed under real-time US guidance. The guidewire was eventually removed under fluoroscopic guidance in a hybrid operation room.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 89-year-old male underwent the placement of a CVC in the left internal jugular vein. During the US-guided procedure, the guide

Fast and low-dose reconstructions of medical images are highly desired in clinical routines. We propose a hybrid deep-learning and iterative reconstruction (hybrid DL-IR) framework and apply it for fast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fast positron emission tomography (PET), and low-dose computed tomography (CT) image generation tasks. First, in a retrospective MRI study (6,066 cases), we demonstrate its capability of handling 3- to 10-fold under-sampled MR data, enabling organ-level coverage with only 10- to 100-s scan time; second, a low-dose CT study (142 cases) shows that our framework c

The introduction of hybrid PET/MRI imaging using integrated systems into clinical practice has opened up the possibility of reducing the radiation dose from hybrid imaging by eliminating the contribution from computed tomography. Studies comparing the possibilities of PET/CT and PET/MRI imaging demonstrated it is possible to use the advantages of the high contrast resolution of magnetic resonance for soft tissue and bone marrow along with PET records in a quality comparable to PET/CT imaging. The significant feature for PET imaging in Hodgkińs lymphoma is that it is a tissue with high levels o

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to report a hybrid technique for the treatment of a suprarenal aortic aneurysm (SAA) in a patient with iliac occlusive disease. Initially, an infrarenal aortobifemoral surgical graft was implanted, followed by deployment of a fenestrated bifurcated stent graft at the suprarenal part of the aorta.
METHODS: A 69-year-old man presented with a 51-mm saccular suprarenal aortic aneurysm and iliac occlusive disease with intermittent claudication. Both common iliac arteries had been previously treated with kissing stents. Both external iliac arteries were severel

BACKGROUND: The forced swim test (FST) is used to predict the effectiveness of novel antidepressant treatments. In this test, a mouse or rat is placed in a beaker of water for several minutes, and the amount of time spent passively floating is measured; antidepressants reduce the amount of such immobility. Though the FST is commonly used, manually scoring the test is time-consuming and involves considerable subjectivity.
NEW METHOD: We developed a simple MATLAB-based motion-detection method to quantify mice's activity in videos of FST. FST trials are video-recorded from a side view. Each pixe

Acute limb ischemia (ALI) is a time-critical vascular emergency associated with high morbidity and amputation risk if treatment is delayed. Popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs), though less common, represent an important and often underrecognized cause. We report a 67-year-old man who presented with sudden-onset severe leg pain, pallor, sensory loss, and motor deficit, consistent with Rutherford IIb ALI. Computed tomography angiography revealed a nearly thrombosed PAA with absent distal run-off. The patient underwent hybrid revascularization combining open thrombo-embolectomy with prosthetic inte

Left atrial appendage (LAA) aneurysm is a rare structural abnormality that can predispose to significant complications, including systemic embolism and complex supraventricular arrhythmias. Here, we report a 44-year-old female with a coexistent LAA aneurysm and persistent atypical atrial flutter (AFL). Despite cardioversion and medical therapy, she had recurrences of persistent AFL and continued to experience reduced exercise tolerance and chest pain. Computed tomography of the heart revealed a large LAA aneurysm measuring 51 × 53 × 25 millimeters. Due to the risk of perforation associated wit

PURPOSE: Coronary flow is affected by evolving events such as atherosclerotic plaque formation, rupture, and thrombosis, resulting in myocardial ischemia and infarction. Highly resolved 3D hemodynamic data at the stenosis is essential to model shear-sensitive thrombotic events in coronary artery disease.
METHODS: We developed a hybrid 1D-3D simulation framework to compute patient-specific coronary hemodynamics efficiently. A 1D model of the coronary flow is coupled to an image-based 3D model of the region of interest. This framework affords the advantages of reduced-order modeling, decreasing

Data-driven materials discovery to accelerate the development of new catalysts for the green transition shows great promise, but requires machine-interpretable experimental data. For this purpose, we compiled the TheMeCat dataset for the thermocatalytic conversion of CO2 to methanol. TheMeCat is curated from experimental literature sources, and designed for hybrid computational and experimental catalyst workflows. The dataset captures key catalyst features, process parameters, and methanol conversion efficiencies. Upon detailed analysis of the generated dataset and the associated variability i

We present an intriguing case of an incarcerated femoral hernia containing an inflamed appendix inside the sac, also known as a De Garengeot hernia. This type of hernia is a rare occurrence that was first described in 1731 by the French surgeon René-Jacque Croissant de Garengeot. A 64-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with a painful mass in the right groin region. Following a computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen and pelvis to evaluate the mass, the diagnosis of a femoral hernia containing a strangulated appendix was established. Subsequently, a hybrid surgical approa

A 57-year-old man, with a history of coarctation patch repair at three years of age, presented with left ventricular dilatation and moderate to severe dysfunction. A computed tomographic angiogram of the chest revealed moderate residual stenosis of the distal arch and proximal descending aorta and a large aneurysm adjacent to the origin of the left subclavian artery. Due to high surgical risk, a hybrid approach was undertaken with temporary balloon occlusion of the left subclavian artery, followed by surgical left common carotid to left subclavian artery graft and percutaneous covered stent im

An 81-year-old male complained of intermittent claudication of the right leg. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a right external iliac artery (EIA) stenosis with severe calcification extending to the common femoral artery. A hybrid procedure of endarterectomy and stenting was performed. EIA endarterectomy was performed using a novel Cavitron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator which ablated the inside of the distal EIA without arterial injury. A stent graft was placed in the proximal EIA covering the margin of endarterectomized distal EIA. Postoperative CT showed no stenosis, and symptoms in the leg

BACKGROUND: Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a frequent complication of chronic renal failure. Patients resistant to pharmacotherapy are candidates for parathyroidectomy. Invasiveness of surgical treatment can be minimized by precise preoperative localization of parathyroid glands. Imaging modalities routinely used for this purpose are ultrasonography and MIBI-Tc99m scintigraphy.
CASE REPORT: Our case report shows advantages of co-registered computer tomography and conventional SPECT imaging (SPECT/CT) in a patient with advanced secondary hyperparathyroidism successfully treated with surgery.

An 83-year-old man with a decreasing level of consciousness was carried to the emergency room. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a ruptured aortic arch aneurysm. He was deemed a high risk candidate for conventional surgical repair. The case was treated by a hybrid approach. Endo-exclusion of thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) was obtained by implanting stentgrafts from the ascending to descending aorta. The brain circulation was maintained by right to left carotid and to left subcravian artery bypasses combined with" chimney endo-debranching graft" of the innominate artery. This could be a method
