This study examines the histological effects of different sizes of polyethylene particles implanted into the rabbit tibia. Seventeen mature New Zealand white female rabbits were allocated into three groups. Group 1 (5 rabbits) received polyethylene particles averaging approximately 16 microns in diameter, implanted into the right proximal tibia through a drill hole. Biliary stents are commonly used for strictures and obstruction, but can migrate distally in up to 20% of cases. Complications of tattooing occur in 2% of cases and include foreign body granulomas, for which treatment options are limited and often ineffective. Allopurinol, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, is used to treat granulomatous reactions, but often leads to systemic side effects. Two recent case reports have described topical application as better tolerated. Herein, we report a patient who developed a granulomatous reaction to permanent eyebrow make-up, for which topical allopurinol achieved a satisfactory result.

Siliconoma represents a granulomatous foreign body reaction to silicone, which is often used for soft tissue augmentation. Although considered as biologically inert for a long time, silicone has been implicated in various undesirable local and systemic reactions, sometimes with a latency period of up to several decades. Treatment of siliconomas is difficult and granulomas involving the face are a therapeutic challenge. We present a 43-year-old woman with a severely disfiguring facial silicone granuloma who was successfully treated with minocycline.

INTRODUCTION: Penetrating injury is characterized by the existence of entry wound only, and it can be with or without an intraocular foreign body (IOFB). IOFB can lead to a mechanical injury of the eye and to cause infection or to manifest other toxic effects on intraocular structures. Iron and copper can dissolve and cause siderosis, i.e. chalcosis of the eye. Ocular siderosis is diagnosed by clinical and electroretinogram (ERG) findings.
OUTLINE OF CASES: The first patient was a 37-year-old male who was injured by a metal foreign body. He presented at the Clinic two years after the injury.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics, management, and outcomes of disc battery ingestion in children.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of children aged between 1 and 15 years old admitted to Chang Gung Children's Hospital due to disc battery ingestion from September 1997 through July 2003). The diagnosis of disc battery ingestion was based upon history, clinical symptoms, and results of imaging studies.
