Brain routes for reading in adults with and without autism: EMEG evidence.

Reading utilises at least two neural pathways. The temporal lexical route visually maps whole words to their lexical entries, whilst the nonlexical route decodes words phonologically via parietal cortex. Readers typically employ the lexical route for familiar words, but poor comprehension plus precocity at mechanically 'sounding out' words suggests that differences might exist in autism. Combined MEG/EEG recordings of adults with autistic spectrum conditions (ASC) and controls while reading revealed preferential recruitment of temporal areas in controls and additional parietal recruitment in A

EEG/MEG- and imaging-based diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

In recent years, researchers have embarked on a search of computer-aided methods for diagnosis of the Alzheimer's disease (AD) to help clinicians make the diagnosis earlier and more accurately such that treatment of the disease can begin sooner when there is a higher chance of success in slowing down the progression of this disease. This article presents a review of journal articles on brain signal- and image-based diagnosis of AD published in the past few years. The areas of signal processing, electroencephalogram and magnetoencephalogram are considered. In the area of image analysis, the fol

Neuronal network coherent with hand kinematics during fast repetitive hand movements.

We quantified the coupling between magnetoencephalographic (MEG) cortical signals and the kinematics of fast repetitive voluntary hand movements monitored by a 3-axis accelerometer. Ten healthy right-handed adults performed self-paced flexion-extension movements of right-hand fingers at ~3Hz with either touching the thumb during flexions (TOUCH) or not (noTOUCH). At the sensor level, we found in all subjects and conditions significant coherence at the movement frequency (F0) and its first harmonic (F1). Coherence values were significantly higher in TOUCH compared to noTOUCH. At the group level

Pediatric extratemporal epilepsy presenting with a complex auditory aura.

INTRODUCTION: Ear plugging (placing fingers in or covering the ears) is a clinical seizure semiology that has been described as a response t … ion of a left mesial frontal lesion at 11 years of age. Scalp video-EEG, magnetic resource imaging, magnetoencephalography, and invasive video-EEG monitoring were carried out. RESULTS: The scalp EEG changes always started after clinical onset. These were not localizing, and encompassed a wide field over the bi-frontal head regions, the left side predominant over the ri …

Specific and unspecific auditory hallucinations in patients with schizophrenia: a magnetoencephalographic study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Different neuroimaging techniques have indicated that auditory association and language cortices are active in patients with schizophrenia and auditory hallucinations. Auditory verbal hallucinations are thought to arise from a disorder of inner speech, but little is known about their origin. METHODS: Spontaneous magnetoencephalographic (MEG) measurements were recorded with a 74-channel two-sensor system (BIOMAGNES II) in 16 patients with schizophrenia and 8 healthy subjects in frequency ranges from 2 to 6 and 12.5 to 30 Hz. Eight patients had auditory hallucinations during th

[Somatosensory evoked potentials/fields--exploration of brain function].

We have summarized the history of electroencephalography(EEG) since 1875, when a paper by Richard Caton was published describing the first E … pectively. Scalp recorded P13, P14 and N18 FFP originate from the brainstem. In this communication, magnetoencephalography(MEG) and results of one of our recent studies on somatosensory evoked fields(SEFs) are also discussed. One of the important features of MEG is that magnetic signals detected outside the head arise mainly from cortical currents tangential to the skul …

Human parieto-occipital visual cortex: lack of retinotopy and foveal magnification.

We studied visual representation in the parietal cortex by recording whole-scalp neuromagnetic responses to luminance stimuli of varying eccentricities. The stimuli were semicircles (5.5 degrees in radius) presented at horizontal eccentricities from 0 degree to 16 degrees, separately in the right and left hemifields. All stimuli evoked responses in the contralateral occipital and medial parietal areas. The waveforms and distributions of the occipital responses varied with stimulus side (left, right) and eccentricity, whereas the parietal responses were remarkably similar to all stimuli. The eq

SERF-MEG as a Functional Biomarker of Optic Nerve Injury: Agreement and Correlation with Visual Evoked Potentials.

This study assessed the cross-modal agreement between spin-exchange relaxation-free magnetoencephalography (SERF-MEG) and conventional visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in patients with optic nerve injury using comparable pattern-reversal visual stimulation paradigms. Forty-five patients with optic neuritis (ON), ischemic optic neuropathy (ION), and traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) were enrolled, and a paired-eye design was applied to assess interocular electrophysiological changes between the affected and fellow eyes. Both modalities indicated consistent impairment of visual pathway function, r…

From retinotopic to ordinal coding: Dissecting the cortical stages of visual word recognition.

Fluent reading requires the brain to precisely encode the positions of letters within words, distinguishing for instance FORM and FROM across variations in size, position, and font. Early visual areas, however, are known to encode retinotopic positions, and how these representations get transformed into a position-invariant neural code remains unclear. Building upon a computational model of reading, we used 7T functional MRI and magnetoencephalography (MEG) to reveal a cortical hierarchy in which early visual areas (V1-V4) predominantly encode retinotopic information, whereas higher-level regi…

Favorable outcomes of epilepsy with gait-induced seizures after resection of the unilateral supplementary motor area.

BACKGROUND: Gait-induced seizures are a rare manifestation of reflex epilepsy. Pathophysiology of this phenomenon has not been fully understood. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old woman presented with a long history of "falls" following paroxysmal bilateral leg stiffness triggered by walking. Scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) revealed low-amplitude rhythmic beta activity, maximal at the Cz electrode, during these events. Magnetoencephalography demonstrated repetitive sharp waves source-localized to the right primary motor cortex. Multiple anti-seizure medications failed to improve her symptoms; …

Distinct manifestations of excitatory-inhibitory imbalance associated with amyloid-β and tau in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

A growing body of evidence shows that epileptic activity is frequently observed in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), implicating underlying excitatory-inhibitory imbalance. The distinction of whether the AD-epileptic phenotype represents a subset of patients or an underdiagnosed manifestation holds major therapeutic implications. Here, we quantified the excitatory-inhibitory imbalance in AD patients using magnetoencephalography and examined the relationships to AD pathophysiology-amyloid-beta and tau, and to epileptic activity. We used two metrics to quantify regional excitatory-inhibito…

Peripheral Nerve Magnetoneurography With Optically Pumped Magnetometers.

Electrodiagnosis is routinely integrated into clinical neurophysiology practice for peripheral nerve disease diagnoses, such as neuropathy, demyelinating disorders, nerve entrapment/impingement, plexopathy, or radiculopathy. Measured with conventional surface electrodes, the propagation of peripheral nerve action potentials along a nerve is the result of ionic current flow which, according to Ampere's Law, generates a small magnetic field that is also detected as an "action current" by magnetometers, such as superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) Magnetoencephalography (MEG) syste…

Alpha oscillations do not implement gain control in early visual cortex but rather gating in parieto-occipital regions.

Spatial attention provides a mechanism for, respectively, enhancing relevant and suppressing irrelevant information. While it is well established that attention modulates oscillations in the alpha band, it remains unclear if alpha oscillations are involved in directly modulating the neuronal excitability associated with the allocation of spatial attention. In this study, in humans, we utilized a novel broadband frequency (60-70 Hz) tagging paradigm to quantify neuronal excitability in relation to alpha oscillations in a spatial attention paradigm. We used magnetoencephalography to characterize…

Low-frequency alternating current stimulation rhythmically suppresses gamma-band oscillations and impairs perceptual performance.

Low frequency oscillations such as alpha (8-12 Hz) are hypothesized to rhythmically gate sensory processing, reflected by 40-100 Hz gamma band activity, via the mechanism of pulsed inhibition. We applied transcranial alternating current stimulation (TACS) at individual alpha frequency (IAF) and flanking frequencies (IAF-4 Hz, IAF+4 Hz) to the occipital cortex of healthy human volunteers during concurrent magnetoencephalography (MEG), while participants performed a visual detection task inducing strong gamma-band responses. Occipital (but not retinal) TACS phasically suppressed stimulus-induced…

Frontoparietal and Cingulo-opercular Networks Play Dissociable Roles in Control of Working Memory.

We used magnetoencephalography to characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics of cortical activity during top-down control of working memory (WM). fMRI studies have previously implicated both the frontoparietal and cingulo-opercular networks in control over WM, but their respective contributions are unclear. In our task, spatial cues indicating the relevant item in a WM array occurred either before the memory array or during the maintenance period, providing a direct comparison between prospective and retrospective control of WM. We found that in both cases a frontoparietal network activated foll…

Decreased somatosensory activity to non-threatening touch in combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe psychiatric disorder prevalent in combat veterans. Previous neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that patients with PTSD exhibit abnormal responses to non-threatening visual and auditory stimuli, but have not examined somatosensory processing. Thirty male combat veterans, 16 with PTSD and 14 without, completed a tactile stimulation task during a 306-sensor magnetoencephalography (MEG) recording. Significant oscillatory neural responses were imaged using a beamforming approach. Participants also completed clinical assessments of PTSD, combat ex…
