Density-velocity relation is scale-dependent in epithelial monolayers.

The relationship between cell density and velocity is often assumed to be negative, reflecting crowding-induced suppression of movement. However, observations across systems reveal a more nuanced picture: while some emphasize contact inhibition of locomotion, others suggest that dense regions exhibit enhanced activity due to force generation. Here, using experimental measurements we show that density-velocity relation in epithelial monolayers is inherently scale dependent. By coarse-graining cell motion over multiple spatial windows, we find that cell velocity magnitude correlates positively w

Inverse Clausius Thermodynamics in Run-and-Tumble Dynamics.

We establish a mapping between one-dimensional run-and-tumble particle dynamics in the presence of thermal noise, and overdamped Brownian motion in a spatially inhomogeneous temperature field. The approach is formulated as an inverse-Clausius thermodynamic framework, where the effective temperature is inferred from the steady-state density. Within this mapping, the local entropy flux and entropy production rate can be extracted directly from steady-state observables, without requiring explicit knowledge of the full position-velocity distribution. The framework introduces a closure that, to lea

Bosworth ankle fracture-dislocation: current concept review.

Bosworth fracture (BF) is a special type of locked ankle fracture-dislocation, characterized by displacement of a fragment of the fractured fibula from the fibular notch behind the posterior surface of the distal tibia. BF is a complex injury affecting multiple structures of the ankle joint, which is still frequently misjudged even today, potentially leading to severe complications. CT examination, including 3D reconstructions, should be the diagnostic standard in BF, as it provides a complete picture of the fracture pathoanatomy, most prominently the morphology of the frequently associated po

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

Recently, a novel heart syndrome, mimicking acute coronary syndrome, was described. Patients commonly present with chest pain, ST segment elevation, prolonged QT interval and slight elevation of cardiac enzymes and biomarker levels, despite the absence of significant coronary artery disease. Because of the peculiar left ventricular apical ballooning shape, given by characteristic regional wall motion abnormalities consisting in apical akinesis and basal hyperkinesis, this syndrome was named "Takotsubo" cardiomyopathy, after a round Japanese octopus fishing pot. An episode of emotional or physi

Radiation-induced chromosome aberrations: insights gained from biophysical modeling.

Enzymatic misrepair of ionizing-radiation-induced DNA damage can produce large-scale rearrangements of the genome, such as translocations and dicentrics. These and other chromosome exchange aberrations can cause major phenotypic alterations, including cell death, mutation and neoplasia. Exchange formation requires that two (or more) genomic loci come together spatially. Consequently, the surprisingly rich aberration spectra uncovered by recently developed techniques, when combined with biophysically based computer modeling, help characterize large-scale chromatin architecture in the interphase

Functional neurology after the Second World War: The beginnings of neurology on screen (III).

Treatment of functional symptoms has a long history, and interventions were often used in soldiers returning from battle. On the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, I review the portrayal of neurology in documentary film. Two documentaries were released in 1946 and 1948 (Let There Be Light and Shades of Gray, respectively), which showed a number of soldiers with functional neurology including paralysis, stuttering, muteness, and amnesia. The films showed successful treatments with hypnosis and sodium amytal by psychoanalytic psychiatrists. These documentaries link neurology wi

Clinical utility of three-dimensional US.

Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasonography (US) is rapidly gaining popularity as it moves out of the research environment and into the clinical setting. This modality offers several distinct advantages over conventional US, including 3D image reconstruction with a single pass of the US beam, virtually unlimited viewing perspectives; accurate assessment of long-term effects of treatment; and more accurate, repeatable evaluation of anatomic structures and disease entities. In obstetric imaging, 3D US provides a novel perspective on the fetal anatomy, makes anomalies easier to recognize, facilitates

Cortical temporal hierarchy is immature in middle childhood.

The development of successful social-cognitive abilities requires one to track, accumulate, and integrate knowledge of other people's mental states across time. Regions of the brain differ in their temporal scale (i.e., a cortical temporal hierarchy) and those receptive to long temporal windows may facilitate social-cognitive abilities; however, the cortical development of long timescale processing remains to be investigated. The current study utilized naturalistic viewing to examine cortical development of long timescale processing and its relation to social-cognitive abilities in middle chil

Prenatal Education of Parents About Newborn Screening and Residual Dried Blood Spots: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Research clearly indicates that current approaches to newborn blood spot screening (NBS) education are ineffective. Incorporating NBS education into prenatal care is broadly supported by lay and professional opinion. OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy and effect of prenatal education about newborn screening and use of residual dried blood spots (DBS) in research on parental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A randomized clinical trial of prenatal educational interventions, with outcomes measured by survey at 2 to 4 weeks postpartum. Partici

Detection of third and sixth cranial nerve palsies with a novel method for eye tracking while watching a short film clip.

OBJECT: Automated eye movement tracking may provide clues to nervous system function at many levels. Spatial calibration of the eye tracking device requires the subject to have relatively intact ocular motility that implies function of cranial nerves (CNs) III (oculomotor), IV (trochlear), and VI (abducent) and their associated nuclei, along with the multiple regions of the brain imparting cognition and volition. The authors have developed a technique for eye tracking that uses temporal rather than spatial calibration, enabling detection of impaired ability to move the pupil relative to normal

Terahertz dynamics at the actinide frontier: linking low-frequency vibrations, electronic structure, and bonding in molecular uranium complexes.

Understanding the nature of uranium-ligand bonding in molecular complexes is a central challenge in modern actinide chemistry. Here, we introduce low-frequency vibrational spectroscopy as a powerful new probe of bonding in uranium-containing molecular crystals by combining terahertz and low-frequency Raman spectroscopy with periodic solid-state density functional theory simulations. Using U(vi)(O t Bu)6 and its one-electron-reduced analogue as model systems, we show that uranium-oxygen bonding is encoded across the low-frequency spectrum through strongly mixed metal-ligand and ligand-lattice m

Perceived treatment processes and effects of interactive motion-assisted exposure therapy for veterans with treatment-resistant posttraumatic stress disorder: a mixed methods study.

Background: A novel intervention, Multi-modular motion-assisted memory desensitization and reconsolidation (3MDR), aims to reduce avoidance and improve engagement for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who did not sufficiently respond to previous treatments. It has been found to effectively reduce PTSD symptoms for veterans with treatment-resistant PTSD. Symptomatic measures alone might not capture all treatment effects, and addition of qualitative outcomes may provide deeper understanding of treatment processes and treatment-induced changes. Objective: To study the perspective

Bystander cricothyroidotomy with household devices - A fresh cadaveric feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: In various motion pictures, medical TV shows and internet chatrooms, non-medical devices were presented as tools for life-saving cricothyroidotomies. However, there is uncertainty about whether it is possible for a bystander to perform a cricothyroidotomy and maintain gas exchange using improvised household items. This study examines the ability of bystanders to carry out an emergency cricothyroidotomy in fresh human cadavers using only a pocket knife and a ballpoint pen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two commonly available pens and five different pocket knives were used. Ten participa…

Assessing abuse risk beyond self-report: analog task of acceptability of parent-child aggression.

OBJECTIVES: The present investigation reports on the development and initial validation of a new analog task, the Parent-Child Aggression Acceptability Movie Task (P-CAAM), intended to assess respondents' acceptance of parent-child aggression, including both physical discipline and physical abuse. METHODS: Two independent samples were utilized to develop and evaluate the P-CAAM: an undergraduate sample to initially pilot the task and a separate sample of normative parents for additional assessment of validity. Scores from the P-CAAM were compared to related measures, including measures of sel

Assessing the effectiveness of a community intervention for monkeypox prevention in the Congo basin.

BACKGROUND: In areas where health resources are limited, community participation in the recognition and reporting of disease hazards is critical for the identification of outbreaks. This is particularly true for zoonotic diseases such as monkeypox that principally affect people living in remote areas with few health services. Here we report the findings of an evaluation measuring the effectiveness of a film-based community outreach program designed to improve the understanding of monkeypox symptoms, transmission and prevention, by residents of the Republic of the Congo (ROC) who are at risk fo

Isokinetic and electromyographic characterization of ankle plantarflexors' hypertonia in people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed at quantifying ankle plantarflexors' resistance to passive motion (RPM) by isokinetic dynamometry and muscle activity through surface electromyography (sEMG) in persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) with limb stiffness and spasticity. METHODS: Slow and fast ankle dorsiflexions (from 5°/s to 210°/s) were imparted passively by an isokinetic dynamometer, and sEMG activity of plantarflexors was recorded at the same time as the square root of the moving average. Based on RPM evaluated at 5°/s, ankles were classified as more- and less-resistant as measured by average p

Highly Correlated Optomechanical Oscillations Manifested by an Anomalous Stabilization.

Driven by a sufficiently powerful pump laser, a cavity optomechanical system will stabilize in coupled oscillations of its cavity field and mechanical resonator. It was assumed that the oscillation will be continuously magnified upon enhancing the driving laser further. However, based on the nonlinear dynamics of the system, we find that the dynamical behaviors of the system are much more complex than this intuitive picture, especially when it is operated near the blue detuning point by the mechanical resonator's intrinsic frequency. There exists an anomalous stabilization: depending on its in
