Analysis of muscle tissue in vivo using fiber-optic autofluorescence and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.

SIGNIFICANCE: Current methods for analyzing pathological muscle tissue are time consuming and rarely quantitative, and they involve invasive biopsies. Faster and less invasive diagnosis of muscle disease may be achievable using marker-free in vivo optical sensing methods. AIM: It was speculated that changes in the biochemical composition and structure of muscle associated with pathology could be measured quantitatively using visible wavelength optical spectroscopy techniques enabling automated classification. APPROACH: A fiber-optic autofluorescence (AF) and diffuse reflectance (DR) spectros

A reversible metal ion fueled DNA three-way junction molecular device for "turn-on and -off" fluorescence detection of mercury ions (II) and biothiols respectively with high selectivity and sensitivity.

We constructed a reversible molecular device in the nanoscale based on a DNA three-way junction (3WJ) fueled by Hg(2+) binding and sequestration. It is highly responsive to external stimuli, which brings about optically detectable global structural changes. Such a DNA device can serve as a novel "turn-on and -off" fluorescent sensor for Hg(2+) and biothiol detection with high selectivity and sensitivity.

Unidirectional interaction between quantum emitters coupled to a plasmonic waveguide.

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) confined at a metal-dielectric interface exhibit spin-orbit interaction, a fundamental mechanism in chiral quantum optics that provides an additional degree of freedom to control light-matter interaction. For fabricating directional quantum devices, establishing a unidirectional interaction between quantum emitters (QEs) is essential. In this work, we theoretically investigate the SPP-mediated interaction between chiral QEs coupled to a one-dimensional plasmonic waveguide, using a macroscopic quantum electrodynamic approach. Our analytic result for the interac

Spin-orbit torque manipulation of sub-terahertz magnons in antiferromagnetic α-Fe2O3.

The ability to electrically manipulate antiferromagnetic magnons, essential for extending the operating speed of spintronic devices into the terahertz regime, remains a major challenge. This is because antiferromagnetic magnetism is challenging to perturb using traditional methods such as magnetic fields. Recent developments in spin-orbit torques have opened a possibility of accessing antiferromagnetic magnetic order parameters and controlling terahertz magnons, which has not been experimentally realised yet. Here, we demonstrate the electrical manipulation of sub-terahertz magnons in the α-Fe

Enhanced Rashba Spin Orbit Coupling and Magnetic Behavior at Oxide Heterointerfaces by Optical Gating.

Complex oxide heterointerfaces have been a hot research spot due to their rich physical phenomena and broad quantum coherence that respond to multiple external stimuli. Among these external stimuli, light is a very powerful one to manipulate properties such as carrier density and spin characteristics. However, achieving a light-magnetic correlation is in high demand for multifield responding devices, and its intrinsic mechanism remains unclear. Here, by illuminating Nd0.86Sr0.14Al0.86Ni0.14O3-SrTiO3 heterointerfaces using 360 nm light, we observe a series of interesting physical phenomena, lik

Development of an Optical Detector of Thrombus Formation on the Pivot Bearing of a Rotary Blood Pump.

Continuous optical monitoring of thrombus formation in extracorporeal mechanical circulatory support (EMCS) devices will contribute to safe, long-term EMCS. A clinically applicable optical detector must be able to distinguish among the optical characteristics of oxygen saturation (SaO2 ), hematocrit (Hct), and thrombus formation. In vitro studies of spectral changes at wavelengths from 400 to 900 nm associated with SaO2 , Hct, and thrombus formed around the top pivot bearing of a Gyro C1E3 pump were conducted. Fresh porcine blood anticoagulated with sodium citrate was circulated in a mock circ

Optic nerve assessment with stereo photographs and ultra-widefield scanning laser ophthalmoscope images.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Clinical evaluation of the optic nerve using 3-D stereo disc photographs is considered the gold standard for estimating vertical cup-to-disc ratios. Ultra-widefield retinal imaging has gained increasing popularity to document and screen the health of the retina and optic nerve. BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is often first identified or suspected based on initial optic nerve assessment. Despite technological advancements in imaging, stereo disc photography remains the gold standard of optic nerve assessment. This study compared vertical cup-to-disc ratio (VCDR) estimations using ult

Dynamically tunable polarized mid-infrared light-emitting diodes from polarization singularities in a band-edge Weyl node.

The polarization states of light-emitting devices in conventional semiconductors are typically deterministically fixed by optical transition selection rules. However, in emerging Weyl semiconductors, band-crossing Weyl nodes introduce exotic polarization contrasts, making emission polarization sensitive to carrier dynamics. Here, we demonstrate mid-infrared light-emitting diodes based on van der Waals tellurium, a Weyl semiconductor featuring a Weyl node precisely at the conduction band minimum (CBM). These devices demonstrate high polarization tunability, with linear polarization degrees cont

Air bubbles pass the security system of the dialysis device without alarming.

During hemodialysis microembolic findings have been noted after the venous chamber (subclavian vein). The aim of this study was to evaluate if air could pass the venous chamber and, if so, if it passes the safety-system detector for air-infusion without triggering an alarm. Various in vitro dialysis settings were performed using regular dialysis devices. A dextran fluid was used instead of blood to avoid the risk of development of emboli. Optical visualization as well as recirculation and collection of eventual air into an intermediate bag were investigated. In addition, a specifically designe

MO detector (MOD): a dual-function optical modulator-detector for on-chip communication.

While augmenting network on chips (NoC) with photonic links enables high-bandwidth communication, the overhead for photonics is rather large, mainly driven by bulky footprints and the multi-functionality of transceivers. The latter requires, in addition to a photon source, signal modulation and detection. If the NoC were photonically augmented at every network point to enable all-to-all connectivity, the resulting photonic overhead would be excessive. Besides, the high bandwidth of a single optical bus may be sufficient to supply the data-sharing demand of a network. Spatial signal routing is

INTACS for keratoconus.

INTACS are two, arc like, PMMA segments which were designed to be surgically inserted into the deep corneal stroma to flatten the central cornea. Their original application was for the refractive correction of mild myopia (−1 to −3D). However, because of the superior accuracy and familiarity with the excimer laser by refractive surgeons, they are rarely used for this indication, except in patients with forme fruste keratoconus or extremely thin corneas with less than 3D of Myopia (1,2). Dr. Joseph Colin in France first conceived of the concept of using INTACS to treat patients with keratoconus

Minimal Required Resolution to Capture the 3D Shape of the Human Back-A Practical Approach.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a prevalent musculoskeletal disorder that causes abnormal spinal deformities. The early screening of children and adolescents is crucial to identify and prevent the further progression of AIS. In clinical examinations, scoliometers are often used to noninvasively estimate the primary Cobb angle, and optical 3D scanning systems have also emerged as alternative noninvasive approaches for this purpose. The recent advances in low-cost 3D scanners have led to their use in several studies to estimate the primary Cobb angle or even internal spinal alignment. H

Magnetically driven middle ear ossicles for optical measurement of vibrations in an ear with opened tympanic membrane.

Vibrations of the middle ear ossicles are easily measured by means of laser vibrometry. However, laser vibrometry requires free visual access to the object under investigation, and acquiring free visual access to the ossicles through the ear canal requires the removal of the tympanic membrane (TM), with the result that the ossicles can no longer be stimulated acoustically. To overcome this, we devised a new setup in which the ossicles can be driven magnetically. After measuring the response of the TM to an acoustic signal, we then remove it and attach a small magnet to the exposed manubrium (a

Traumatic optic neuropathy caused by blunt injury to the inferior orbital rim.

A 48-year-old woman was struck on the right inferior orbital rim by a gardening device and immediately developed complete visual loss in the right eye. Clinical and imaging evaluations failed to disclose any damage to the globe or optic nerve or to their nearby soft tissues and bones. Within months, ipsilateral optic disc pallor, a nerve fiber bundle visual field defect, and a persistently subnormal visual acuity developed. We attribute the visual loss to indirect optic nerve injury. To our knowledge, blunt injury to the inferior orbital rim has not been reported as a cause of this phenomenon.

A localized surface plasmon resonance-based multicolor electrochromic device with electrochemically size-controlled silver nanoparticles.

The first localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-based multicolor electrochromic device with five reversible optical states is demonstrated. In this device, the size of deposited silver nanoparticles is electrochemically controlled by using a voltage-step method in which two different voltages are applied successively. The electrochemically size-controlled silver nanoparticles enable a reversible multiple-color change by a shift of the LSPR band.
