Reliability Assessment of Wearable Technologies for Physiological Measurements: An Evaluation of Shimmer3 GSR+, Empatica E4, EmbracePlus, and Pixel Watch 2 Across Cognitive, Affective and Physical Activity Tasks.

Wearable sensing has evolved from custom-built systems towards standardized research- and consumer-grade devices, improving accessibility and comparability in physiological data analysis. Wrist-worn sensors offer non-invasiveness, minimal setup, and suitability for everyday use, making them increasingly attractive for both research and real-world applications. However, it remains unclear how consumer-grade smartwatches compare with established research-grade wearables in physiological data quality and suitability for empirical studies. We present a mixed-methods study assessing the signal comp

Ischemic Stroke with Cardiac Pacemaker Implantation: Comparison of Physiological and Ventricular Pacing Modes.

BACKGROUND: The clinical characteristics of ischemic stroke in patients with a pacemaker (PM) are not well understood. METHODS: Forty-six ischemic stroke patients with a PM were investigated retrospectively, and the impact of different pacing modes was compared. RESULTS: The patients were divided into a physiological pacing group (n = 22) and a ventricular pacing group (n = 24). The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) was significantly higher in the ventricular pacing group (36% versus 75%; P = .008). The mean left atrial dimension was relatively large in the ventricular pacing group than

Early metabolic characteristics of lesion and nonlesion tissue after head injury.

We defined lesion and structurally normal regions using magnetic resonance imaging at follow-up in patients recovering from head injury. Early metabolic characteristics in these regions of interest (ROIs) were compared with physiology in healthy volunteers. Fourteen patients with severe head injury had positron emission tomography within 72 h, and magnetic resonance imaging at 3 to 18 months after injury. Cerebral blood flow (CBF), oxygen utilization (CMRO(2)), and oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) were all lower in lesion ROIs, compared with nonlesion and control ROIs (P<0.001); however, there

The bioidentical hormone debate: are bioidentical hormones (estradiol, estriol, and progesterone) safer or more efficacious than commonly used synthetic versions in hormone replacement therapy?

BACKGROUND: The use of bioidentical hormones, including progesterone, estradiol, and estriol, in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has sparked intense debate. Of special concern is their relative safety compared with traditional synthetic and animal-derived versions, such as conjugated equine estrogens (CEE), medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), and other synthetic progestins. Proponents for bioidentical hormones claim that they are safer than comparable synthetic and nonhuman versions of HRT. Yet according to the US Food and Drug Administration and The Endocrine Society, there is little or no e

Physiological response of Populus nigra 'Italica' to galling aphids feeding.

Although gall-inducing aphids, namely Pemphigus bursarius (L.) and P. phenax Börner et Blunck, are widely known as serious pests for their secondary hosts (lettuce and carrot, respectively), the physiological mechanism of their gall induction on Populus L. trees still requires a better understanding. In this study, we compared physiological parameters, i.e. H2 O2 , electrolyte leakage (EL ), MDA, APX and GPOD. Changes in physiological parameters were analysed in foliar tissues with galls and in the gall tissues themselves and compared to leaves without galls. Significantly higher H2 O2 levels

Replicating spine loading during functional and daily activities: An in vivo, in silico, in vitro research pipeline.

Lifestyle heavily influences intervertebral disc (IVD) loads, but measuring in vivo loads requires invasive methods, and the ability to apply these loads in vitro is limited. In vivo load data from instrumented vertebral body replacements is limited to patients that have had spinal fusion surgery, potentially resulting in different kinematics and loading patterns compared to a healthy population. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a pipeline for the non-invasive estimation of in vivo IVD loading, and the application of these loads in vitro. A full-body Opensim model was developed by adapti

Physiological assessment after percutaneous coronary intervention: the hard truth.

Physiologically guided revascularization, using fractional flow reserve (FFR) or instantaneous wave free ratio (iFR) has been demonstrated to be associated with better long-term outcomes compared to an angiographically-guided strategy, mainly avoiding inappropriate coronary stenting and its associated adverse events. On the contrary, the role of invasive physiological assessment after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is much less well established. However, a large body of evidence suggests that a relevant proportion of patients undergoing PCI with a satisfying angiographic result show

Effectiveness of a home fortification programme with multiple micronutrients on infant and young child development: a cluster-randomised trial in rural Bihar, India.

Research demonstrates the importance of nutrition for early brain development. Few studies have examined the effectiveness of multiple micronutrient powders (MNP) on child development. This study examined the impacts of home fortification with MNP on motor and mental development, executive function and memory of children living in Bihar. This two-arm cluster-randomised effectiveness trial selected seventy health sub-centres to receive either MNP and nutrition counselling (intervention) or nutrition counselling alone (control) for 12 months. Front-line health workers delivered the intervention

Physiologic basis for understanding quantitative dehydration assessment.

Dehydration (body water deficit) is a physiologic state that can have profound implications for human health and performance. Unfortunately, dehydration can be difficult to assess, and there is no single, universal gold standard for decision making. In this article, we review the physiologic basis for understanding quantitative dehydration assessment. We highlight how phenomenologic interpretations of dehydration depend critically on the type (dehydration compared with volume depletion) and magnitude (moderate compared with severe) of dehydration, which in turn influence the osmotic (plasma os
