Surgery for Baker's cysts in children is plagued by high recurrent rate after the operation. In this study, a modified surgical method is developed to avoid the recurrence. Between 1995 and 2002, nine symptomatic Baker's cysts were excised in nine children, including six boys and three girls with a mean age of 5.7 years, were reviewed retrospectively. The diagnosis and follow-up were confirmed by clinical and ultrasound investigation. The modified surgical technique features a step in which the orifice of the posterior joint capsule is closed tightly by the application of one purse-string non-

Signal intensities, signal-to-noise ratios (S/N), and contrast-to-noise ratios (C/N) in dependence on the echo distance and echo number of the new turbo (fast) spin-echo technique are analysed by phantom, volunteer and patient measurements. With increasing echo number (3 to 15 echoes), signal intensities increase (25 to 50%), S/N varies between different tissues, and C/N of fat to water decreases (70%). A high echo number, although it shortens the imaging time, is thus not always the best choice since the fat/water contrast is lost. However, a high fat/water contrast is advantageous for severa

MRI was used to evaluate inflammatory synovial processes in 53 patients over a 4-year period. Multiple disease processes were imaged, including: rheumatoid arthritis [n = 12], osteochondromatosis [n = 6], bursal abnormalities [n = 17], ganglion cyst [n = 1], meniscal cyst [n = 5], hemophilia [n = 1], and septic arthritis [n = 11]. The soft tissue contrast resolution of MRI and its multiplanar capability makes it particularly suitable for evaluating masslike or fluid inflammatory processes for diagnostic purposes, to determine extent of disease, and in some cases, to determine the composition o

Fifty patients with edema and heaviness of the lower limbs lacking any general or local explanation were investigated by a plethysmographic method to detect venous stasis of the calf. In 27 of them, hyperextension of the knee produced venous stasis, which was only elicited in one of 39 normal subjects. In 9 patients with edema of systemic origin there was no stasis when the knee was extended. Intermittent venous stasis due to hyperextension of the knee therefore appears to be a causal phenomenon in many cases of edema of unknown origin. A popliteal cyst was found in 9 of 16 patients who underw…

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound and fluoroscopic-guided aspiration and therapeutic injection of Baker's cysts in the relief of pain and pressure symptoms.
METHODS: A retrospective, observational, single-arm study of consecutive patients referred from the Orthopaedic service for image-guided aspiration followed by therapeutic injection of symptomatic Baker's cysts was performed with institutional approval in the context of a Quality Improvement project. Patients' pain was graded using a 10-point Likert scale. Under standard sterile conditions, a 10 cm 5 Fr Yueh centesis needle

A 49-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease secondary to posterior urethral valves has received two kidney transplants since 1975, and both have succumbed to chronic rejection. She has been anuric since 2003 and undergoes hemodialysis three times a week. She was admitted to our hospital for evaluation for a third kidney transplant. The kidney was found to be unsuitable for this recipient, and she was taken to dialysis prior to discharge. Shortly after dialysis, she developed acute pain in the lower portion of her left leg and received a venous ultrasound to rule out possible deep vein thr

Entrapment neuropathies of the tibial nerve by Baker's cysts occur infrequently. We present a patient with entrapment neuropathy of the tibial nerve by a Baker's cyst which is preoperatively evaluated by nerve conduction study and magnetic resonance imaging. We present this case with a review of the literatures.

The most common causes of posterior and posterolateral knee pain (besides referred pain) are knee joint effusions, tendinitis of the hamstring tendons, Baker cyst (semi-membranous cyst), bursitis, meniscal pathologies such as tears and ganglions and lesions of the anterior cruciate ligament. Less common causes include popliteus and gastrocnemius tendinitis, arthrofibrosis after trauma, posterior cruciate ligament sprains, deep venous thrombosis and/or irritations of the common peroneal nerve. We present one patient with posterolateral knee pain after a minor contusion. Magnetic resonance imagi

A 50-year-old woman with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis presented with painful swelling of the right calf. Roentgenograms, sonograms, magnetic resonance images, and arthrograms were obtained. A diagnosis of hemorrhagic Baker's cyst was made, and surgical excision was performed. The etiology, clinical features, and radiological evaluation of simple and complicated Baker's cysts are discussed and the differential diagnosis considered.

A 35 year old man presented with the sudden onset of left leg pain and swelling. Empirical anticoagulation for presumed deep vein thrombophlebitis was followed by acute worsening of symptoms. On further evaluation the patient was found to have a ruptured Baker's cyst and an acute posterior compartment syndrome.
