Analysis of Early Outcomes of Pencil Beam Proton Therapy Compared with Passive Scattering Proton Therapy for Clival Chordoma.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the early outcomes of the following 2 types of proton therapy: passive scattering proton therapy (PSPT) and pencil beam proton therapy (PBPT). METHODS: The consecutive patients who had surgery in our facility were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Thirty-two patients were identified (PBPT 22 patients [69%]). The mean (±standard deviation [SD]) tumor size was 3.8 ± 1.8 cm, and the most common location was the upper clivus (41%). Four cases (13%) were revision surgeries referred from elsewhere, and 2 cases underwent additional surgery elsewhere to achieve near-total resec

Pelvic radiation dose measurement for trauma patients in multifield radiographic examinations: A phantom-based TLD dosimetry study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Trauma patients often suffer from multiple injuries and require undergoing various radiography which is referred to as multifield radiographic examinations. Protective measures may be ignored for these examinations due to stressful emergency situations or patients' conditions. This study was conducted to evaluate the scattered doses received by the pelvis during different common multifield radiographic examinations with an emphasis on field size adjustment. METHODS: A whole-body phantom, PBU-50, resembling the body mass, was used to carry out the common examinations for t

Development and Performance Evaluation of a Novel Mobile X-ray System for Use in Disaster Situations.

Mobile radiography is useful for triaging patients during disasters. However, in the face of large-scale disasters, medical equipment, including X-ray systems, may be restricted because of power outages. Therefore, a novel mobile radiography system that can be used in any disaster was developed, and its basic performance was evaluated. This system is designed for use during power outages and can be recharged using both household and solar power sources. The reproducibility of the X-ray output of the system (irradiation dose, tube voltage, radiation quality and irradiation time) was excellent,

A simple and low-cost technic for immobilization of mandible during head and heck radiotherapy: a technical note.

UNLABELLED: Immobilization protocols for head and neck radiotherapy (HNR) are needed to reduce radiation dispersion in non-tumoral tissues and to reduce damage to noble structures; however, involuntary mandibular movements require additional adaptations of thermoplastic masks. PURPOSE: Our objective was to describe an easy and low-cost disposition to help thermoplastic masks immobilize the mandible during HNR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We created Styrofoam models to stabilize the mandible which was used to make adaptation to the thermoplastic masks. The Styrofoam model was inserted into alginat

Second primary cancer in irradiated stage I testicular seminoma.

The incidence of second primary cancer (SPC) was determined in 64 irradiated stage I testicular seminoma patients, treated and followed at the Northern Israel Oncology Center from 1968 to 1988. Seven (11%) patients developed a total of eight second cancers. The cumulative risk for developing second primary cancer at ten, 15 and 20 years following the diagnosis of seminoma was 2.5%, 5.1% and 8.9%, respectively. Two patients developed SPC within the radiation field (urinary bladder, sigmoid colon) and four patients outside the radiation field (bronchogenic cancer, thymoma, malignant melanoma, th

[Relationship between Radiation Quality and Image Quality in Digital Chest Radiography: Validation Study Using Human Soft Tissue-equivalent Phantom].

PURPOSE: To evaluate image quality for chest radiography at different radiation qualities, using phantoms with scatter fractions similar to those of lungs. METHODS: Two base phantoms with 10 and 4 cm thicknesses, respectively, made of a soft tissue-equivalent material, were used to mimic the X-ray attenuation of the human lung. Two plates with soft tissue- and bone-equivalent materials, respectively, were placed on the base phantom as contrast objects. The image data were obtained with the same entrance surface dose in each radiation quality. Six radiation qualities generated using 120 and 90

[Craniopharyngioma--a "geographical malignant" tumour].

The craniopharyngioma is a rare dysontogenetic tumour that originates from either scattered cells of the craniopharyngeal duct or from metaplastically mutated anterior pituitary parenchyma cells. Despite being classified as a WHO-Class-I tumour, the histologically benign craniopharyngioma may display an aggressive behaviour. Like other congenital tumours, it usually becomes manifest within the first two decades of life. Patients typically complain of headache and a chiasma syndrome with bitemporal hemianopsy may develop depending on tumour localisation. In children, anterior pituitary insuffic

Radiation exposure to the pediatric patient during cardiac catheterization and angiocardiography. Emphasis on the thyroid gland.

Thermoluminescent dosimetry was used to measure the radiation exposure to the skin, thyroid and gonads in 50 consecutive pediatric patients undergoing cardiac catheterization and angiocardiography using cine photofluorography. Average exposures were 17.1 R to the skin, 2.3 R to the thyroid and 0.1 R to the gonads. Fluoroscopy accounted for approximately 80% of the skin and thyroid exposure and cine photofluorography for 20-25%. Occasional primary-beam irradiation was the major contributor to gonad exposure. Internal scatter of the incident x-ray beam was primarily responsible for thyroid expos

Direct Observation of Anionic Yields from the Liquid-Vapor Interface by Electron Irradiation.

Dissociative electron attachment (DEA) is widely believed to play a high-profile role in ionizing radiation damages of bioorganic molecules, and its fundamentals are mainly learned from the gas-phase studies. However, the DEA process in aqueous solution is still in debate. Here we provide experimental evidence about the DEA processes of liquid methanol by using electron-impact-time-delayed mass spectrometry. In contrast to the gas- and solid-phase DEAs, methoxide ion CH3O- is the predominant product from the liquid interface. Furthermore, this anion can be produced with both the primary low-en

At what time should one go out in the sun?

To get an optimal vitamin D supplement from the sun at a minimal risk of getting cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), the best time of sun exposure is noon. Thus, common health recommendations given by authorities in many countries, that sun exposure should be avoided for three to five hours around noon and postponed to the afternoon, may be wrong and may even promote CMM. The reasons for this are (1) The action spectrum for CMM is likely to be centered at longer wavelengths (UVA, ultraviolet A, 320-400 nm) than that of vitamin D generation (UVB, ultraviolet B, 280-320 nm). (2) Scattering of so

Geographic pathology of skin cancer.

BACKGROUND: The development of knowledge concerning the role of sun exposure in causing skin cancer has been a gradual one. OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the article by Urbach who used manikin coated with an ultraviolet dosimeter to see exactly where on the head and neck the exposure was greatest. CONCLUSION: Urbach showed that the areas of greatest sun exposure on his manikins corresponded with the location of 95% of squamous cell carcinoma and 66% of basal cell carcinoma. He also clearly showed the importance of scattered sky and reflected radiation.

Primary Beam Air Kerma Dependence on Distance from Cargo and People Scanners.

The distance dependence of air kerma or dose rate of the primary radiation beam is not obvious for security scanners of cargo and people in which there is relative motion between a collimated source and the person or object being imaged. To study this problem, one fixed line source and three moving-source scan-geometry cases are considered, each characterized by radiation emanating perpendicular to an axis. The cases are 1) a stationary line source of radioactive material, e.g., contaminated solution in a pipe; 2) a moving, uncollimated point source of radiation that is shuttered or off when i

Protective effects of soft acrylic yellow filter against blue light-induced retinal damage in rats.

Recently, a yellow intraocular lens (IOL) was developed for the purpose of reducing potential blue light-induced retinal damage after cataract surgery. However, the effect of yellow filters on retinal protection remains to be clarified. To test the protective effects of yellow filters on blue light-induced retinal damage, a yellow and a clear soft acrylic filter were attached to the right and left eyes, respectively, of albino rats and exposed to 4.5 k lux blue fluorescent lights with peak wavelength at 420 nm (ranging 380-500 nm; short blue) or 446 nm (ranging 400-540 nm; long blue) for 6h. The optical properties of the anterior segment of the eye: implications for cortical cataract.

Epidemiological studies have correlated cortical cataract with exposure to light and have suggested that this is due primarily to relatively short wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation (UV-B). In addition, some cellular and animal models also implicate UV-B. In order to evaluate the likely role of different wavelengths of light in the etiology of cortical cataracts, the optical characteristics of several animal models were ascertained and compared to the primate. This study shows that the mouse model absorbs UV-B almost exclusively whereas other animal models such as the rabbit and the guinea p

Clinical evaluation of twin screen-film chest radiography: cost effective lung and mediastinal imaging.

OBJECTIVE: A new twin screen-film cassette system optimised for conventional chest radiography was evaluated by four thoracic radiologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The twin screen-film cassette system produces two film images, the front film optimised for the mediastinal region of the chest, the rear for the lung region. Image degradation on either screen-film system due to internal photon scatter has been virtually eliminated due to the use of a dividing filter. Fifty patients were included in a trial that resulted in a set of chest images for each patient, taken on the same inspiration, by b

Natural products as photoprotection.

The rise in solar ultraviolet radiation on the earth's surface has led to a depletion of stratospheric ozone over recent decades, thus accelerating the need to protect human skin against the harmful effects of UV radiation such as erythema, edema, hyperpigmentation, photoaging, and skin cancer. There are many different ways to protect skin against UV radiation's harmful effects. The most popular way to reduce the amount of UV radiation penetrating the skin is topical application of sunscreen products that contain UV absorbing or reflecting active molecules. Based on their protection mechanism,

Ionizing Radiation Synthesis of Hydrogel Nanoparticles of Gelatin and Polyethylene Glycol at High Temperature.

Nanohydrogel particles of polyethylene glycol (PEG), gelatin (GEL), and PEG-GEL mixtures (MIXs) were synthesized with a high electron beam and 60Co gamma-ray radiation. The relatively novel technique of Asymmetrical Flow Field Flow Fractionation (AF4 or AFFFF) coupled to a Multi-Angle Laser Light Scattering (MALLS) detector was mainly used to determine the hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) of the radiation-synthesized PEG, GEL, and PEG-GEL nanohydrogel particles. Our approach to achieving nanohydrogel particles is to enhance the intracrosslinking reactions and decrease the intercrosslinking reactions
