BACKGROUND: Distal third clavicle fractures are associated with high rates of nonunion. Acceptable healing rates have been reported; however, complications and the need for additional procedures are a concern. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional outcomes and healing rates of an arthroscopy-assisted technique for fixation of unstable distal third clavicle fractures.
METHODS: Seven patients presenting to a single surgeon with displaced distal clavicle fractures were included. A curved suspensory button and suture tape construct with a single coracoclavicular tunnel was used

We conducted a study to evaluate the outcomes and complications of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of 2-, 3-, and 4-part proximal humerus fractures using a standard management protocol with locking plates. Of 72 patients with acute proximal humerus fractures managed with ORIF and locking plates, 63 were available at the minimum follow-up of 1 year and met the inclusion criteria. At each follow-up, radiographs were reviewed for healing, hardware failure, osteonecrosis, shoulder range of motion, and DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand) scores; any complications were rec

UNLABELLED: The authors report a case of an elderly female with a displaced varus misalignment of a proximal humerus fracture which met the indications for surgery, but the patient was treated conservatively with an arm sling due to the wishes of the patient and her relatives. The clinical outcome was nearly full function compared with the right shoulder.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 65-year-old Thai female presented with right shoulder pain 1 h after a fall during which her right shoulder hit the floor. Radiographs of the right shoulder in anteroposterior and lateral transcapular views showed a p

INTRODUCTION: Periprosthetic humeral fractures are a rare and increasing entity due to the rising number of shoulder arthroplasties. These fractures pose a significant challenge for surgeons, with incidence rates ranging from 1.2% to 19.4%. They can occur intraoperatively or as late complications, often influenced by trauma, prosthetic wear, or loosening.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on all patients admitted with periprosthetic humeral fractures over a four-year period (2018-2022). Inclusion criteria were postoperative periprosthetic humeral fractures with a minim

UNLABELLED: Displaced fractures of the acromion are rare injuries. A 45-year-old lady presented with an isolated acromion fracture (type III, Kuhn classification) resulting from a direct blow to the top of her right shoulder in a fall while skiing. After standard clinical and radiological examination of the shoulder, an open reduction and internal plate fixation using a postero-superior approach to the scapula was performed. Early rehabilitation of the arm and shoulder was initiated. At 50 days after surgery the patient achieved a full range of motion in her right shoulder and muscle strength

Bilateral divergent fracture dislocations of the shoulder are very rare. Caution with regards to seizure development in COVID-19 patients must be taken to avoid such injuries. This is the case of a male COVID-19 patient who sustained hyponatremia-induced seizure that resulted in bilateral divergent shoulder fracture dislocations. The patient suffered a lesser tuberosity fracture on his left shoulder which was posteriorly dislocated, and a greater tuberosity fracture on his right, which was anteriorly dislocated. The patient underwent bilateral open reduction and internal fixation, with suture

The coracoid process of the scapula is in close proximity to major neurovascular structures, including the brachial plexus and the axillary artery and vein. In addition, it serves as a major site of attachment for multiple tendons and ligaments about the shoulder. Isolated coracoid fractures are rare; however, they can be easily overlooked on routine shoulder radiographs. Importantly, when these fractures go undiagnosed, they are at high risk for nonunion. In this paper, we will review the relevant anatomy of the coracoid process, classification schemes for coracoid fractures, mechanisms of in

A 79-year-old right-handed woman presented with an indirect trauma to her left shoulder after a fall down the stairs. X-rays and computed tomography showed a four-part glenohumeral fracture-dislocation with a subcutaneous ectopic location of the humeral head in the retroclavicular space. A reverse total shoulder arthroplasty was performed using a deltopectoral approach with direct superior extraction of the humeral head. The result at 2 years was a subjective shoulder value of 80%, an absolute Constant score of 59, and a relative Constant score of 92/100. To the best of our knowledge, this is

Treatment results of antegrade locked nailing of acute humeral shaft fractures, including union rate and recovery of shoulder function, have been inconsistent. This led the current authors to hypothesize that implant design and surgical techniques might account for this inconsistency. In the current study, 47 fractures (38 acute; nine pathologic) in 47 patients achieved union with the techniques of closed nailing, short to long segment nailing, and fracture compression. Satisfactory recovery of shoulder function occurred because of minimal surgical trauma, prevention of impingement by the nail

OBJECTIVES: Hand dominance has been reported to be an important factor affecting outcomes after upper extremity trauma but remains unstudied after hemiarthroplasty for fracture. This study determined whether dominance affected outcomes after hemiarthroplasty for proximal humerus fractures.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Tertiary care referral center.
PATIENTS: Sixty-one patients, after hemiarthroplasty for proximal humerus fracture, returned for comprehensive assessment and were divided into 2 groups: dominant (DOM) shoulder affected (n = 25) and non-dominant (non-DOM) shoulde

BACKGROUND: Based on the location and size of the fracture block, open reduction and internal fixation can be employed or assisted for shoulder arthroscopy in the treatment of glenoid fractures. However, the treatment of lower part of glenoid fractures through a novel axillary approach has not been reported so far.
CASE SUMMARY: A 22-year-old right-handed man was transferred to our outpatient clinic because of right shoulder injury during a traffic accident. X-ray examination after admission suggested the fracture of the lower part of the right glenoid and an ipiselial proximal humeral fractu

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Shoulder function may be changed after healing of a nonoperatively treated clavicular fracture, especially in cases of clavicular shortening or mal-union. We investigated scapular orientations and functional outcome in healed clavicular fractures with and without clavicular shortening.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 32 participants with a healed nonoperatively treated midshaft clavicular fracture were investigated. Motions of the thorax, arm, and shoulder were recorded by standardized electromagnetic 3D motion tracking. The DASH score and Constant-Murley score were used to eval

Acute shoulder injuries in adults are often initially managed by family physicians. Common acute shoulder injuries include acromioclavicular joint injuries, clavicle fractures, glenohumeral dislocations, proximal humerus fractures, and rotator cuff tears. Acromioclavicular joint injuries and clavicle fractures mostly occur in young adults as the result of a sports injury or direct trauma. Most nondisplaced or minimally displaced injuries can be treated conservatively. Treatment includes pain management, short-term use of a sling for comfort, and physical therapy as needed. Glenohumeral disloca

This study aimed to review shoulder clinical and imaging findings in Parkinson's disease (PD), focusing on the significance of timely diagnosis and management of shoulder dysfunction in PD for the prevention of shoulder-related complications. A bibliographical search was employed, using "Parkinson's" and "Shoulder Dysfunction" as keywords. A Magnetic Resonance Imaging, twenty clinical and three US studies were selected as relevant to shoulder dysfunction in PD. Shoulder pain, frozen shoulder and arm swing asymmetry are the most prevalent clinical findings that may antedate cardinal PD symptoms

CASE: A 63-year-old man sustained multiple bilateral rib fractures, left scapula, and clavicle displaced fractures after being gored by a bull. He underwent surgical stabilization of the ribs, and the shoulder injuries were managed nonoperatively. Three months later, the patient presented with scapula and clavicle malunions and disabling shoulder ankylosis, which were addressed in a single reconstruction. Six-year follow-up manifested in nearly asymptomatic, normal function.
CONCLUSION: Single-staged reconstruction of all indicated fractures in forequarter lateral implosion injuries is recomm

UNLABELLED: We studied 50 patients with AO type C2 distal radial fractures and 35 with AO type C3 distal radial fractures treated by open reduction and palmar locking plate fixation. At 3-month clinical assessments, mean wrist flexion arcs, grip strengths and disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand scores were significantly better for AO type C2 fractures. At 2-year post-operative clinical assessments, mean disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand scores were significantly better for AO type C2 fractures than for AO type C3 fractures. At 2-year radiographic examinations, anterior angulati

Historically, reverse shoulder arthroplasty was reserved for older, low-demand patients in whom rotator cuff arthropathy was diagnosed. Other common indications included sequelae of previously treated proximal humerus fractures, failed anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty, tumor resection, and rheumatoid arthritis in the elderly population. Unpredictable implant durability and high complication rates have limited the use of reverse shoulder arthroplasty to a narrow group of patients. Over the past decade, however, research has led to an improved understanding of the biomechanics behind reverse

PURPOSE: Proximal humerus fractures can be treated non-operatively with excellent results in the vast majority of cases. Surgical intervention is indicated for more complex fracture patterns, utilizing internal fixation or arthroplasty techniques. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term functional outcomes of patients who underwent shoulder hemiarthroplasty due to proximal humerus fracture.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients who underwent shoulder hemiarthroplasty due to proximal humerus fracture in the University Hospital of Heraklion, utilizing the Aequalis fractu
