Pre-procedural femoral vessel ultrasound in dogs with patent ductus arteriosus: diameter, image quality and relationship with arterial catheterization.

INTRODUCTION: Objectives: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in dogs is often treated via minimally invasive transvascular occlusion using femoral artery access. This study compared ultrasound-derived diameter and image quality of the right femoral artery (RFA) and vein (RFV) in dogs with PDA using a linear ultrasound probe (L-P) and phased-array transthoracic echocardiography probe (TTE-P). The case outcome was assessed. ANIMALS, MATERIALS & METHODS: Forty-five client-owned dogs with PDA were prospectively enrolled. Ultrasound-measured RFA and RFV diameters were obtained on images acquired with

Repeat balloon valvuloplasty for dogs with recurrent or persistent pulmonary stenosis.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary stenosis (PS) is a common congenital defect in the dog. Severe valvar PS can be treated with balloon valvuloplasty (BV) to reduce obstruction severity and improve clinical signs. Repeat BV is often unnecessary, as restenosis is uncommon. Repeated pulmonary BV in people is generally successful and safe, but outcomes in dogs with recurrent or persistent stenosis have not been reported. The objectives of this study were to retrospectively evaluate outcomes of repeat BV in dogs. ANIMALS, MATERIALS, AND METHODS: Medical records and stored echocardiographic images

Persistent truncus arteriosus with an anomalous coronary artery in a cat.

A 6-month-old, female, domestic shorthair cat weighing 1.8 kg presented with cardiomegaly seen on radiographs taken at a primary care veterinary center. Echocardiography revealed a single enlarged vessel overriding a ventricular septal defect and severe hypertrophy of the right ventricular free wall. There was no evidence of a pulmonary arterial trunk originating from the heart. The blood flow through the ventricular septal defect exhibited right-to-left shunting. The cat suddenly experienced dyspnea and died at home, and a postmortem examination was performed. A single large vessel was noted

Coronary arterial compression testing by simultaneous balloon valvuloplasty and coronary angiography in an English bulldog with pulmonary valve stenosis.

A 4-year-old male neutered English bulldog presented for heart murmur evaluation. Echocardiography identified severe pulmonic stenosis (an echocardiography-derived transpulmonary pressure gradient of 100 mmHg), and computed tomography confirmed the presence of an anomalous coronary artery with a prepulmonic course of the left coronary artery arising from the right coronary ostium. Before artificial pulmonic valve implantation, a coronary compression test was performed. A simultaneous aortic root angiogram and pulmonic balloon valvuloplasty revealed complete occlusion of the circumflex branch.

Single left coronary ostium with a prepulmonic right coronary artery course in a French Bulldog with congenital valvular pulmonary stenosis.

A two-year-old, male castrated, French bulldog was presented for evaluation of coronary artery anatomy before balloon valvuloplasty for severe pulmonic valve stenosis. Multidetector computed tomography angiography showed a single left coronary ostium, absent right coronary ostium, and an anomalous, prepulmonic coursing right coronary artery. Medical management was elected to avoid the attendant risk associated with intervention. This case report documented the first known case of this specific anomaly in French bulldogs. Veterinary cardiologists should be aware of the potential for this specif

Immediate outcomes of low-pressure balloon valvuloplasty for severe pulmonary valve stenosis in 20 dogs: a retrospective, single-center case series.

INTRODUCTION: The primary objective of this study was to describe the immediate post-procedural outcomes in dogs with severe pulmonary stenosis that were treated with low-pressure balloon valvuloplasty (BV) at a single institution. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective case series; medical records of dogs that underwent BV performed with a balloon dilation catheter >20 mm in diameter and a burst pressure of less than 4 atm (atm) were retrospectively reviewed. Twenty animals were identified fitting the criteria. Pre-procedural and post-procedural echocardiograms and peri-procedural ang

Transvalvular pulmonic stent angioplasty: procedural outcomes and complications in 15 dogs with pulmonic stenosis.

INTRODUCTION: Balloon valvuloplasty is the treatment of choice for dogs with severe type A pulmonic stenosis (PS), but less successful for dogs with annular hypoplasia and unsuitable for supravalvular stenosis or cases with a circumpulmonary coronary malformation. We report outcomes and complications of the first 15 consecutive transvalvular pulmonic stent angioplasty procedures performed by a single center in dogs with PS. ANIMALS: Fifteen dogs with naturally occurring PS were included in the study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dogs underwent echocardiography before and four weeks after the proce

Type B valvular and supravalvular pulmonic stenosis with aberrant pre-pulmonic right coronary artery diagnosed by non-electrocardiography-gated, multislice computed tomography in a Boston terrier.

Pulmonic stenosis (PS) is a common congenital heart disease in dogs. It may be associated with an aberrant coronary artery (CA) in brachycephalic breeds. If present, a CA anomaly must be identified before pulmonic valvuloplasty. A 1.7-year-old Boston terrier was referred for a grade V/VI systolic heart murmur and exercise intolerance. Echocardiography revealed combined type B valvular and supravalvular PS; an aberrant CA was also suspected. Non-electrocardiography (ECG)-gated, 160-multislice computed tomographic angiography (CTA) confirmed severe right ventricular wall hypertrophy, a hypoplast

Acute pulmonary edema in a dog with severe pulmonary valve stenosis: A rare complication after balloon valvuloplasty.

Pulmonic stenosis is a frequent congenital heart disease in dogs, and the treatment of choice is balloon valvuloplasty which is usually safe and successful. The authors describe for the first time a severe complication after balloon valvuloplasty in a five-month-old dog. After effective treatment, with a considerable drop in right ventricular pressures, the dog developed hypoxemia and dyspnea due to pulmonary edema. The dog underwent intensive care and symptoms improved after a few hours of oxygen therapy, continuous positive airway pressure, and furosemide. Although this event is rare, it cou

Fatal acute lung injury after balloon valvuloplasty in a dog with pulmonary stenosis.

A one-year-old French Bulldog was referred for the management of a severe form of pulmonary valve stenosis (PS) complicated by right-sided congestive heart failure. Echocardiography showed severe valvular PS with right ventricular concentric hypertrophy, dilatation and severe right atrial enlargement. A pulmonary balloon valvuloplasty (PBV) was performed with a balloon-to-pulmonary annulus ratio of 1.36. Echocardiography immediately after PBV showed a significant reduction in right atrial and ventricular size, improved opening and mobility of the pulmonary valve leaflets, and a 75% reduction i

Non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema complicating balloon valvuloplasty and stent angioplasty of severe pulmonary valve stenosis in four dogs.

In dogs, balloon valvuloplasty is considered the treatment of choice for severe pulmonary valve stenosis, and this technique is currently performed routinely in specialist referral practices with low morbidity and mortality. Stent angioplasty has also been recently proposed as a viable treatment option. The present case series describes the clinical course of four dogs with severe pulmonary valve stenosis, treated with balloon valvuloplasty or stent angioplasty at four different institutions, which developed non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema perioperatively after apparently successful dilation

Radiofrequency catheter ablation of cranial vena cava flutter in four dogs.

Four dogs were referred to our institution for incessant supraventricular tachycardias causing weakness; congestive heart failure was present in one dog. At admission, all dogs had a surface electrocardiogram showing a narrow QRS complex tachycardia with a ventricular rate ranging from 80 to 300 bpm, variable atrioventricular conduction ratio from 1:1 to 3:1, and positive atrial depolarizations in inferior leads (II, II, III, and aVF), with isoelectric lines between them. Three of four dogs had a dilated cardiomyopathy phenotype; one dog had a heart base tumor involving the cranial vena cava w

Accuracy of echocardiographically estimated pulmonary artery pressure in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease.

INTRODUCTION: Echocardiographically identified pulmonary hypertension is an independent predictor of poor outcome in dogs affected by myxomatous valvular degeneration (MMVD). Systolic pulmonary arterial pressure is routinely estimated based on its relationship with the Doppler-determined velocity of tricuspid regurgitation as defined by the simplified Bernoulli equation (sPAP_D). Experimental studies suggest that the method is imperfect, but its accuracy in dogs with MMVD is not known. ANIMALS: Twenty dogs affected by MMVD that had cardiac remodeling and measurable tricuspid regurgitation. M

Trifascicular block in a cat infected with Cytauxzoon felis.

A 3-year-old female spayed indoor/outdoor Siamese cat was diagnosed with cytauxzoonosis and irregular heart rhythm was appreciated during a physical examination. On electrocardiogram, the cat had an average ventricular rate of 144 beats/min with Wenckebach type (Mobitz type I) atrioventricular block. The QRS complexes of sinus conducted beats had left anterior fascicular block morphology, they were followed by two subsequent beats presented with a prolonged P-R interval and QRS conducted with a left bundle branch block. The finding of alternating left anterior fascicular block and left bundle

Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension in a pot-bellied pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) with right-sided congestive heart failure.

Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension is a rare disease reported in humans and dogs diagnosed as persistent elevation of pulmonary arterial blood pressure without predisposing or associated diseases. A four-month-old pot-bellied pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) was presented for decreased appetite, lethargy, respiratory distress, and occasional syncope. On physical examination, the pig was tachypneic with labored breathing, with a distended abdomen and a bilateral grade 4-5/6 parasternal systolic heart murmur. Systolic pulmonary arterial pressure was estimated at 95 mmHg by Doppler echocardiog

Surgical repair for canine tricuspid valve dysplasia: Technique and case report.

Tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD) is a congenital malformation of the right atrioventricular valve characterized by restricted leaflet motion, annular dilation, and tricuspid regurgitation (TR). Severe cases typically exhibit progressive right-sided congestive heart failure, affecting the quality of life and survival. This article describes a technique for surgical repair of TVD and a case report with long-term follow-up. A 1.5-year-old intact male Labrador retriever with severe TR underwent surgical repair for TVD. Valve repair was performed under cardiopulmonary bypass and consisted of neochor
