Hepatic Elastometry and Glissonian Line in the Assessment of Liver Fibrosis.

The aim of this study was to identify a method for staging hepatic fibrosis using a non-invasive, rapid and inexpensive technique based on ultrasound morphologic hepatic features. A total of 215 patients with different liver diseases underwent B-mode (2-D brightness mode) ultrasonography, vibration-controlled transient elastography, 2-D shear wave elastography and measurement of the controlled attenuation parameter with transient elastography. B-Mode images of the anterior margin of the left lobe were obtained and processed with automatic Genoa Line Quantification (GLQ) software based on a neu

DEEPMIR: a deep neural network for differential detection of cerebral microbleeds and iron deposits in MRI.

Lobar cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) and localized non-hemorrhage iron deposits in the basal ganglia have been associated with brain aging, vascular disease and neurodegenerative disorders. Particularly, CMBs are small lesions and require multiple neuroimaging modalities for accurate detection. Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) derived from in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is necessary to differentiate between iron content and mineralization. We set out to develop a deep learning-based segmentation method suitable for segmenting both CMBs and iron deposits. We included a convenien

Survival prediction for oral tongue cancer patients via probabilistic genetic algorithm optimized neural network models.

OBJECTIVES: High throughput pre-treatment imaging features may predict radiation treatment outcome and guide individualized treatment in radiotherapy (RT). Given relatively small patient sample (as compared with high dimensional imaging features), identifying potential prognostic imaging biomarkers is typically challenging. We aimed to develop robust machine learning methods for patient survival prediction using pre-treatment quantitative CT image features for a subgroup of head-and-neck cancer patients. METHODS: Three neural network models, including back propagation (BP), Genetic Algorithm-

An objective comparison of detection and segmentation algorithms for artefacts in clinical endoscopy.

We present a comprehensive analysis of the submissions to the first edition of the Endoscopy Artefact Detection challenge (EAD). Using crowd-sourcing, this initiative is a step towards understanding the limitations of existing state-of-the-art computer vision methods applied to endoscopy and promoting the development of new approaches suitable for clinical translation. Endoscopy is a routine imaging technique for the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in hollow-organs; the esophagus, stomach, colon, uterus and the bladder. However the nature of these organs prevent imaged tissues t

Semantic segmentation of the multiform proximal femur and femoral head bones with the deep convolutional neural networks in low quality MRI sections acquired in different MRI protocols.

Medical image segmentation is one of the most crucial issues in medical image processing and analysis. In general, segmentation of the various structures in medical images is performed for the further image analyzes such as quantification, assessment, diagnosis, prognosis and classification. In this paper, a research study for the 2D semantic segmentation of the multiform, both spheric and aspheric, femoral head and proximal femur bones in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sections of the patients with Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD) with the deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is prese

Depth in convolutional neural networks solves scene segmentation.

Feed-forward deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) are, under specific conditions, matching and even surpassing human performance in object recognition in natural scenes. This performance suggests that the analysis of a loose collection of image features could support the recognition of natural object categories, without dedicated systems to solve specific visual subtasks. Research in humans however suggests that while feedforward activity may suffice for sparse scenes with isolated objects, additional visual operations ('routines') that aid the recognition process (e.g. segmentation or g

CUP-AI-Dx: A tool for inferring cancer tissue of origin and molecular subtype using RNA gene-expression data and artificial intelligence.

BACKGROUND: Cancer of unknown primary (CUP), representing approximately 3-5% of all malignancies, is defined as metastatic cancer where a primary site of origin cannot be found despite a standard diagnostic workup. Because knowledge of a patient's primary cancer remains fundamental to their treatment, CUP patients are significantly disadvantaged and most have a poor survival outcome. Developing robust and accessible diagnostic methods for resolving cancer tissue of origin, therefore, has significant value for CUP patients. METHODS: We developed an RNA-based classifier called CUP-AI-Dx that ut

Automatic Prediction of Meningioma Grade Image Based on Data Amplification and Improved Convolutional Neural Network.

Meningioma is the second most commonly encountered tumor type in the brain. There are three grades of meningioma by the standards of the World Health Organization. Preoperative grade prediction of meningioma is extraordinarily important for clinical treatment planning and prognosis evaluation. In this paper, we present a new deep learning model for assisting automatic prediction of meningioma grades to reduce the recurrence of meningioma. Our model is based on an improved LeNet-5 model of convolutional neural network (CNN) and does not require the extraction of the diseased tissue, which can g

Control of an optimal finger exoskeleton based on continuous joint angle estimation from EMG signals.

Patients suffering from loss of hand functions caused by stroke and other spinal cord injuries have driven a surge in the development of wearable assistive devices in recent years. In this paper, we present a system made up of a low-profile, optimally designed finger exoskeleton continuously controlled by a user's surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals. The mechanical design is based on an optimal four-bar linkage that can model the finger's irregular trajectory due to the finger's varying lengths and changing instantaneous center. The desired joint angle positions are given by the predictiv

[The study on the early diagnosis of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in the newborns by fuzzy BP neural networks].

This paper is aimed to study a method and feasibility of early diagnostic system using hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in the newborns. Fifteen non-invasive indicators with high sensitivity and specificity were selected for the early diagnosis of HIE on the basis of related researches from the literature and the researches in our laboratory. The diagnostic test was done with 140 cases with the HIE, using the fussy BP neural network experiment system. The initial results showed that the accuracy rate was 100% for the training set and 95% for the testing set, and the error rate was 5%. The

Gait classification in post-stroke patients using artificial neural networks.

The aim of this study was to test three methods for classifying the gait patterns of post-stroke patients into homogenous groups. First, qualitative test results were found to correctly classify patients' gait patterns with an average success rate of 85%. Seeking further improvement, two quantitative methods were then tested. Analysis of min/max angle values in three lower limb joints, however, was less successful, showing a correct classification rate of below 50%. The best classification results were seen using an artificial neural network (ANN) to analyze the full progression of lower limb

Identifying airway obstructions using photoplethysmography (PPG).

OBJECTIVE: Central and obstructive apneas are sources of morbidity and mortality associated with primary patient conditions as well as secondary to medical care such as sedation/analgesia in post-operative patients. This research investigates the predictive value of the respirophasic variation in the noninvasive photoplethysmography (PPG) waveform signal in detecting airway obstruction. METHODS: PPG data from 20 consenting healthy adults (12 male, 8 female) undergoing anesthesia were collected directly after surgery and before transfer to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). Advanced integrated technique in breast cancer thermography.

Thermography is a passive and non-contact imaging technique used extensively in the medical arena, but in relation to breast care, it has not been accepted as being on a par with mammography. This paper proposes the analysis of thermograms with the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) and bio-statistical methods, including regression and receiver operating characteristics (ROC). It is desired that through these approaches, highly accurate diagnosis using thermography techniques can be achieved. The suggested method is a multi-pronged approach comprising of linear regression, radial basis fu

Comparison of manual sleep staging with automated neural network-based analysis in clinical practice.

We have compared sleep staging by an automated neural network (ANN) system, BioSleep (Oxford BioSignals) and a human scorer using the Rechtschaffen and Kales scoring system. Sleep study recordings from 114 patients with suspected obstructed sleep apnoea syndrome (OSA) were analysed by ANN and by a blinded human scorer. We also examined human scorer reliability by calculating the agreement between the index scorer and a second independent blinded scorer for 28 of the 114 studies. For each study, we built contingency tables on an epoch-by-epoch (30 s epochs) comparison basis. From these, we deri

Ensembles of Bayesian-regularized genetic neural networks for modeling of acetylcholinesterase inhibition by huprines.

Acetylcholinesterase inhibition was modeled for a set of huprines using ensembles of Bayesian-regularized Genetic Neural Networks. In the Bayesian-regularized Genetic Neural Network approach the Bayesian regularization avoids overfitted regressions and the genetic algorithm allows exploring a wide pool of three-dimensional descriptors. The predictive capacity of our selected model was evaluated by averaging multiple validation sets generated as members of neural network ensembles. When 60 members are assembled, the neural network ensemble provides a reliable measure of training and test set R(

Data differentiation and parameter analysis of a chronic hepatitis B database with an artificial neuromolecular system.

This paper describes the application of a biologically motivated system to the diagnosis of chronic hepatitis B. The system integrates intra- and inter-neuronal information processing so as to capture the biology-like gradual transformability of structure/function relationships. The system was applied to a clinical hepatitis B database, divided into two sets. The first set comprised 676 records, of which one half were chronic hepatitis B patients, and the other half healthy individuals. The second set included 375 records, of which one third were chronic hepatitis B patients; another third wer

Obstacle Detection System for Navigation Assistance of Visually Impaired People Based on Deep Learning Techniques.

Visually impaired people seek social integration, yet their mobility is restricted. They need a personal navigation system that can provide privacy and increase their confidence for better life quality. In this paper, based on deep learning and neural architecture search (NAS), we propose an intelligent navigation assistance system for visually impaired people. The deep learning model has achieved significant success through well-designed architecture. Subsequently, NAS has proved to be a promising technique for automatically searching for the optimal architecture and reducing human efforts fo

The Occipital Face Area Is Causally Involved in Facial Viewpoint Perception.

UNLABELLED: Humans reliably recognize faces across a range of viewpoints, but the neural substrates supporting this ability remain unclear. Recent work suggests that neural selectivity to mirror-symmetric viewpoints of faces, found across a large network of visual areas, may constitute a key computational step in achieving full viewpoint invariance. In this study, we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to test the hypothesis that the occipital face area (OFA), putatively a key node in the face network, plays a causal role in face viewpoint symmetry perception. Each partici

Simulating transcranial magnetic stimulation during PET with a large-scale neural network model of the prefrontal cortex and the visual system.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) exerts both excitatory and inhibitory effects on the stimulated neural tissue, although little is known about the neurobiological mechanisms by which it influences neuronal function. TMS has been used in conjunction with PET to examine interregional connectivity of human cerebral cortex. To help understand how TMS affects neuronal function, and how these effects are manifested during functional brain imaging, we simulated the effects of TMS on a large-scale neurobiologically realistic computational model consisting of multiple, interconnected regions tha
