Anomalous unilateral single pulmonary vein mimicking pulmonary nodules on HRCT of the lungs and scimitar syndrome on chest radiograph: multidetector CT findings.

Anomalous unilateral single pulmonary vein is an extremely rare anomaly of the pulmonary venous system. It is often confused with other pulmonary abnormalities such as hypogenetic lung (scimitar) syndrome, pulmonary varices, pulmonary nodules, and arteriovenous malformations. We present imaging findings including multidetector computerized tomography in a case of anomalous unilateral single pulmonary vein mimicking pulmonary nodules on high-resolution computed tomography of the lungs and scimitar syndrome on chest radiograph in an asthmatic girl.

CT-guided biopsy in two cases of retroperitoneal fibrosis.

Diffuse retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare inflammatory process. We report on two known cases of RPF, without evidence of involvement of the urinary tract or of the venous system. A computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy was performed in each case, and the histological findings eliminated other pathological processes, particularly those of malignant origin. In both cases, a therapy with cortisone was instituted, and a follow-up with CT at 6 months has demonstrated a regression of the pathology of more than 50%.

Cryptococcal meningitis and primary CNS lymphoma in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: a case report.

This report describes a case of cryptococcal meningitis as the initial manifestation of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). During the admission, computed tomography (CT) of brain revealed multiple lesions with ring-enhancement over the cerebellum, frontal and temporal lobes. Autopsy findings showed diffuse cryptococcal meningoencephalitis and central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma forming multiple round ring abscesses. The case demonstrated that opportunistic cryptococcal infection and primary CNS lymphoma may coexist in a patient with AIDS.

CT-dacryocystography for nasolacrimal duct obstruction following paranasal sinus surgery.

Nasolacrimal duct obstruction and consequent epiphora is a complication that may develop in some patients following paranasal sinus surgery. We describe the technique of CT-dacryocystography which entails contrast injection of the lacrimal system and simultaneous computed tomography (CT) scanning of the facial structures. This technique provides concurrent information regarding obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct and the presence of disease recurrence or persistence in the adjacent paranasal sinuses. The role of CT-dacryocystography prior to endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy is discussed brief

[Mediastinal pseudo-tumor from portal hypertension (author's transl)].

A radiological opacity of the posterior and inferior mediastinum should evoke a lesion of vascular origin. The venous nature of the mass can be easily confirmed by morphological changes apparent during the respiratory cycle and changes in position. Investigations to establish etiology of this venous ectasia arising from the azygos vein require more extensive radiological examinations, and computed tomography may be of value. Portal hypertension is one cause of increased venous blood flow in the azygos systems, and should be systematically considered.

Very-large-scale mimetic optogenetic synapses for physical reservoir computing.

The scaling law of deep learning, which governs the relationship between model size and performance, has led to critical concerns regarding efficiency and sustainability. To address these challenges, this study presents a computational approach using self-organized submillimeter-long tungsten disulfide nanotube cluster as a 3D very-large-scale physical reservoir. The reservoir, with its 0D van der Waals interfaces on the order of 108, or 1.0×1010 mm-3, matches the synaptic quantity and density of the fruit fly's brain. The reservoir demonstrates the capability to perform a wide range of tasks

Electrically Tunable WSe2/α-In2Se3 van der Waals Ferroelectric Heterostructure for Reconfigurable Photodetection and Neuromorphic Computing.

The growing demand for compact and energy-efficient hardware in artificial intelligence and edge computing calls for multifunctional electronic systems beyond conventional architectures. van der Waals (vdW) ferroelectric semiconductors, which couple switchable polarization with tunable carrier transport, offer a promising avenue for reconfigurable electronics. Here, we demonstrate a WSe2/α-In2Se3 vdW heterostructure that enables dynamic and nonvolatile reconfiguration of electrical functionality within a single device. Through bias-mediated control of ferroelectric polarization and the associa

Characterizing Gateway Modes for Solid-Solid Phase Transitions in Organic Crystals: The Thermosalient 4-DBpFO.

We disclose the nature of the 4-DBpFO thermosalient (or "jumping") crystal phase transition 40 cm-1 (i.e., 1.2 THz) "gateway" mode using computed low-frequency Raman spectra (LFRS) benchmarked to experimental spectra and show that it is a coherent/in-phase collective motion of the inner-outer rings. We explore and reveal the roles of anharmonicity, thermal disorder, and volume fluctuations in determining the THz spectral shape. The anharmonic couplings and cell fluctuations appear to be more than just innocent spectators, and indeed, the intermolecular correlations for this mode involve multip

Preventing Pathogenic Dimerization in a Misfolded Antibody Light Chain through the Design of an Inhibitory Peptide.

Immunoglobulin light chain (AL) amyloidosis is the most common form of systemic amyloidosis. The disease correlates with the formation of insoluble aggregates mostly composed of patient-specific antibody light chains, whose hypervariable regions make each case unique and highlight the need for personalized therapeutics. In this study, we focused on a pathogenic homodimer we previously obtained from a patient-derived light chain. By analyzing the dynamics and the interface of this dimer, we identified a peptide with potential inhibitory activity. The peptide was then refined using a computation

Homomorphic encryption enables privacy preserving polygenic risk scores.

Polygenic risk score models (PRSs) are important tools in precision medicine, enabling personalized risk prediction; however, they raise privacy concerns. Fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) provides a potential solution, allowing computation on encrypted genomic data. Here, we develop an open-source implementation of FHE for PRS (HEPRS), available online. HEPRS involves a three party system: clients (clinicians handling sensitive genetic data), modelers developing a PRS (academics), and evaluators (a local hospital running the models while maintaining confidentiality). We apply HEPRS to synthe

Beyond synaptic plasticity: a summary of a linear model of the cerebellar locomotor computation.

We present a summary of ideas that attempt to explain how the locomotor cerebellum may represent and process information. It includes the proposals that (i) the main network computation is a passive and unlearned effect of cell type morphologies and neural architecture; (ii) information has topographically defined spatial dimensions; (iii) it is coded at collective level, at any instant, in any random sample of functionally grouped signals; (iv) topographical organization extends outside the cerebellum and maps to the peripheral nervous system; and (v) learning and memory are at microzone leve

Ruptured Penetrating Aortic Ulcer With Hemopericardium in a Young Adult: A Case Report.

Penetrating aortic ulcer (PAU) is a rare but highly lethal manifestation of acute aortic syndrome (AAS), most commonly seen in elderly patients with advanced atherosclerosis. Ascending aortic involvement is particularly uncommon but carries a high risk of rupture, hemopericardium, and cardiac tamponade. We present the case of a 33-year-old male with longstanding poorly controlled hypertension who presented to a community hospital with chest pain and syncope. Initial evaluation suggested acute coronary syndrome; however, computed tomography angiography revealed rupture of a penetrating ascendin

From door to diagnosis: A case report of a rare and life-threatening presentation of Takayasu arteritis.

Takayasu arteritis is a chronic, large vessel vasculitis that typically affects the aorta and its main branches. We present a case of a 33-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with Takayasu arteritis after being admitted for acute cardiogenic shock requiring inotropes. Initial transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated severe biventricular dysfunction. Computed tomography imaging of his chest showed pulmonary infarcts. Patient subsequently developed sudden lower extremity weakness and bowel incontinence, and urgent magnetic resonance imaging of his spine demonstrated thoracolumbar vascular

[A Case of Renal Cell Carcinoma with Small Bowel Metastasis Accompanied by Invagination].

We report a case of small bowel metastasis from renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in a woman in her 70s. In 20XX, she underwent a laparoscopic left nephrectomy for left-sided RCC (pT3bN0M0). Three and a half years later, she presented to the emergency department with recurrent vomiting. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a suspected small bowel tumor with intussusception and associated lymphadenopathy. Laparoscopic partial resection of the small intestine was performed, and pathological examination confirmed metastatic RCC in both the small bowel and regional lymph nodes. One month l

Computational modeling of ATM signaling: a predictive framework for drug repurposing in ataxia-telangiectasia.

Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare genetic disorder caused by ATM mutations, leading to impaired DNA repair, oxidative stress, and neurodegeneration. We developed a computational model of ATM-mediated signaling using ordinary differential equations in COPASI, capturing key processes including DNA damage sensing, cell cycle regulation, autophagy, and oxidative stress response. The model simulates physiological, ATM-deficient, and drug-treated conditions to explore repurposing strategies. We evaluated the effects of spermidine, omaveloxolone, and HDAC4 inhibition, revealing mechanisms by whic

Brain-computer Interaction in the Smart Era.

The brain-computer interface (BCI) system serves as a critical link between external output devices and the human brain. A monitored object's mental state, sensory cognition, and even higher cognition are reflected in its electroencephalography (EEG) signal. Nevertheless, unprocessed EEG signals are frequently contaminated with a variety of artifacts, rendering the analysis and elimination of impurities from the collected EEG data exceedingly challenging, not to mention the manual adjustment thereof. Over the last few decades, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology ha

Fracture of Epoxy Networks Using Atomistic Simulations.

Predicting fracture properties through all-atomistic simulations poses challenges due to classical force field limitations in breaking covalent bonds and the computational demands of reactive force fields like ReaxFF. In addressing this, we propose a scale-bridging method for forecasting the fracture behavior of highly cross-linked epoxy combining classical force fields, the LAMMPS package REACTER, and for bond breaking a parameter based on experimental distance criterion. In our analysis, we anticipate the macroscopic fracture energy GC of the epoxy network through the application of a contin

Cavernous Lymphangioma of the Neck: An Extraordinary Case.

Cervical lymphangioma is a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system that shows a predilection for the head and neck regions. They are most common in children between the ages of three and five and are rarely present in adults. While over 90% of lymphatic malformations are congenital, they can also manifest later due to factors such as trauma, infection, tumors, or medical procedures. They are often asymptomatic, but symptoms, if present, vary depending on the location of the tumor. Imaging techniques such as ultrasonography and computed tomography can aid in accurately mapping the exten

Impact of thermodynamical rotational flow of cerebrospinal fluid in the presence of elasticity.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the experimental justification of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) amplitude and elastic fluctuations of ventricles, we extend our previous computational study to models with rotational flow and suitable boundary conditions. In the present study, we include an elastic effect due to the interaction with the thermal solutal model which accounts for CSF motion which flows rotationally due to hydrocephalus flows within the spinal canal. METHODS: Using an analytical pertubation method, we have attempted a new model to justify CSF flow movement using the influences of wall temperatur
