Multiple-echo data image combination in infants with developmental dysplasia of the hip: comparison with conventional T1-weighted and T2-weighted imaging.

Two-dimensional multiple-echo data image combination (MEDIC) images, as well as conventional T1-weighted and T2-weighted images, were obtained for 38 infants with developmental dysplasia of the hip. We retrospectively reviewed these images to evaluate subjective image quality and femoral head-to-ischium contrast. MEDIC images were considered to be of high quality compared with the conventional T1-weighted (P<0.0001) and T2-weighted images (P<0.05), as well as have a higher contrast than conventional T1-weighted and T2-weighted images (P<0.001, respectively). In conclusion, MEDIC images provide

Flip-angle mapping of 31P coils by steady-state MR spectroscopic imaging.

PURPOSE: Phosphorus ((31)P) MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) is primarily applied with sensitive, surface radiofrequency (RF) coils that provide inhomogeneous excitation RF field (B1(+)) and rough localization due to their B1(+) and sensitivity (B1(-)) profiles. A careful and time-consuming pulse adjustment and an accurate knowledge of flip angle (FA) are mandatory for quantification corrections. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, a simple, fast, and universal (31)P B1(+) mapping method is proposed, which requires fast steady-state MRSI (typically one sixth of normal measurement time) in ad

Tips and techniques in breast MRI.

The standard breast MRI protocol includes T2 sequences (anatomy and signal analysis), T1 gradient-echo sequences which can detect markers placed after biopsy, and injected dynamic 3D sequences for performing volume and multiplanar reconstructions, which are particularly useful for locating lesions well. Good patient positioning is essential and is obtained by using foam wedges for small breasts, ensuring there are no folds, and the correct position of the nipples. These aspects limit movement artefacts which alter subtraction sequences, so that it must always be possible for reading these sequ

DTI of commissural fibers in patients with Chiari II-malformation.

Chiari II-malformation is a complex congenital deformity of the brain which is frequently associated with hydrocephalus. Abnormalities of the corpus callosum are known to occur in the majority of patients. The objective of the present study was to study the microstructure of the corpus callosum (CC) and the anterior commissure (AC) to differentiate between different mechanisms of damage to these structures. We investigated 6 patients with Chiari II-malformation and 6 well-matched healthy volunteers employing T1-weighted 3D imaging and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to determine the fractional

Multivariate normalization with symmetric diffeomorphisms for multivariate studies.

Current clinical and research neuroimaging protocols acquire images using multiple modalities, for instance, T1, T2, diffusion tensor and cerebral blood flow magnetic resonance images (MRI). These multivariate datasets provide unique and often complementary anatomical and physiological information about the subject of interest. We present a method that uses fused multiple modality (scalar and tensor) datasets to perform intersubject spatial normalization. Our multivariate approach has the potential to eliminate inconsistencies that occur when normalization is performed on each modality separat

Inversion recovery MRI in idiopathic Parkinson disease is a very sensitive tool to assess neurodegeneration in the substantia nigra: preliminary investigation.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Segmented inversion recovery (IR) ratio imaging (SIRRIM) has been established as a sensitive tool to assess neurodegeneration of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SN(C)) in patients with idiopathic Parkinson disease (IPD). The obtained results suggest the possibility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a biological marker for IPD. The strength and a parsimonious analysis of the technique are discussed to assess the potential of using MRI as a biological marker for IPD and improve the differential diagnosis of sporadic Parkinson disease. Our hypothesis states that

Advanced transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) planning from CT with ShapeForest.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is becoming a standard treatment for non-operable and high-risk patients with symptomatic severe aortic valve stenosis. As there is no direct view or access to the affected anatomy, comprehensive preoperative planning is crucial for a successful outcome, with the most important decisions made during planning being the selection of the proper implant size, and determining the correct C-arm angulations. While geometric models extracted from 3D images are often used to derive these measurements, the complex shape variation of the AV anatomy found in

3D myocardial deformation analysis from cine MRI as a marker of amyloid protein burden in cardiac amyloidosis: validation versus T1 mapping.

Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is a significant contributor to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and is appreciating expanding therapeutic options. Non-invasive tools aimed at accurate identification and surveillance of therapeutic response are of immediate and expanding need. While native and post-contrast T1 mapping quantify expansion of the extra-cellular compartment from amyloid protein deposition, 3D strain analysis of non-contrast cine images offers unique advantages relevant to high prevalence of renal insufficiency in this population and reduced dependency on field strength, pul
