Effect of hormonal contraception in individuals with anxiety and mood (affective) disorders: a rapid review.

BACKGROUND: Psychological side effects are a frequent reason for discontinuation of hormonal contraception (HC), yet women with pre-existing mental health (MH) conditions are often excluded from studies despite their prevalence and needs. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of HC used for pregnancy prevention on anxiety and mood (affective) symptoms in women with established MH disorders. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane CENTRAL were systematically searched for English-language studies published between 2015 and 2025. Randomised controlled trials, cohort and cross-sectional studies evalu

Individualized antibiotic therapy in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia in the intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: The optimal duration of antibiotic therapy for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) remains controversial. Although current guidelines recommend 7-8 days of treatment, prolonged antibiotic use is still common in clinical practice. However, objective criteria to individualize and safely shorten treatment duration remain poorly defined. The aim of this study was to identify early clinical and laboratory response parameters associated with eligibility for short-term antibiotic therapy and to evaluate the predictive performance of composite criteria assessed on day 5 of treatment. Impact of genetic variants on hippocampal volume among individuals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Hippocampal volume reduction is a consistent finding in schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder type I (BP-I), yet the role of genetic factors remains unclear. We investigated the influence of DISC1 (rs821616), AKT1 (rs1130233), COMT (rs4680), and GSK-3ꞵ(rs334558) polymorphisms on hippocampal morphology. STUDY DESIGN: Seventy-one participants (25 SCZ, 22 BP-I, 24 healthy controls, HC) underwent 1.5T MRI and genotyping. Bayesian multilevel models estimated associations between corrected hippocampal volume, diagnosis, hemisphere, and genetic variants. STUDY RESULTS:

Individual and household factors associated with tungiasis in a marginalized population in Karamoja, northeastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by adult female fleas which burrow into the skin of people and animals, causing considerable pain and itching. The distribution of the disease is heterogeneous, with Napak district, Karamoja sub-region of northeastern Uganda having the highest disease burden recorded globally. We aimed to determine the factors associated with this high prevalence to inform future intervention strategies. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study to identify factors associated with infection of individual children and adults, and a nested ca

Developing recommendations for promoting wellbeing in individuals with alopecia areata: a modified Delphi study.

OBJECTIVES: Develop recommendations for multidisciplinary, multisector care providers involved in supporting individuals with alopecia areata (AA) to promote their well-being of these individuals. AA is a condition that causes hair loss on the scalp and, for some, the head or whole body and is associated with difficulties in psychosocial adjustment. DESIGN: A modified Delphi consensus study with three rounds: round 1 was a qualitative survey to generate recommendations; round 2 involved a rating survey to work towards consensus on important items to retain and round 3 asked panellists from fo

Elevated intron retention implicates neuroinflammation in brains of individuals with alcohol use disorder.

Intron retention, a form of alternative RNA splicing, can occur as part of normal gene regulation or result from disruption of the splicing machinery. Retained introns can potentially form double-stranded RNA, activating innate immune sensors and inflammation. This mechanism has been implicated in cancer but has not been studied in neuropsychiatric diseases like alcohol use disorder. We systematically analysed transcriptome-wide intron retention events in post-mortem brain tissue from 142 individuals (66 with alcohol use disorder and 76 controls), encompassing 320 region-specific samples from

Verbal fluency in individuals with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Verbal fluency, an important aspect of executive function, is often impaired in attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, findings across studies have been inconsistent regarding age groups and comorbid conditions. This meta-analysis examined verbal fluency in both children and adults with ADHD, including studies that reported common comorbidities (e.g., oppositional defiant disorder [ODD], conduct disorder [CD], and anxiety disorders), while excluding studies including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, ScienceDirec

Prevalence of Familial Melanoma Genes and Cancer Risk Among Genomically Ascertained Individuals.

IMPORTANCE: The prevalence of germline pathogenic variants in familial melanoma genes has primarily been studied in individuals with a personal or family history of cancer, an approach that may introduce ascertainment bias. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of pathogenic variants in clinically actionable familial melanoma genes and their associated cancer risks. DESIGN, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a genome-first analysis of 2 population-scale genomically ascertained cohorts of individuals registered in the UK Biobank (UKBB) and the US Geisinger MyCode (GMC) databases, each linke

Characteristics of the Management of Gastric and Duodenal Ulcers in Individuals With Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease.

Peptic ulcer disease in patients with end -stage chronic kidney disease presents a complex clinical problem due to metabolic disturbances, impaired mucosal regeneration, polypharmacy, and limitations in the use of standard medications. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of conservative and surgical (kidney transplant ) management of gastric and duodenal ulcers in patients with end -stage renal disease versus patients without renal dysfunction. Among the 34 patients who were examined, findings showed that kidney transplant contributed to rapid ulcer healing, normalization of bio

Metabolic Signatures Associated with COVID-19 Vaccination in Serum from Healthy Individuals.

Background: COVID-19 vaccines have proven effective in reducing severe disease and mortality from SARS CoV-2 infection. The underlying molecular mechanisms and alterations in the human serum metabolome influencing the effectiveness and development of immunity remain unclear. Methods: Serum samples were collected from 29 healthy individuals at three time points: prior to vaccination (A), post-first dose (B), and post-second dose (C). Untargeted high-resolution (HR) liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was performed on these samples. Metabolites showing significant differ

Chirp-Evoked Electrocochleography and Speech-in-Noise Performance in Normal-Hearing Individuals With Tinnitus.

PURPOSE: Both tinnitus and poor hearing-in-noise performance have been proposed as perceptual consequences of cochlear synaptopathy, which can occur in the absence of significant hearing loss. However, to date, no study has investigated chirp-evoked electrocochleography (ECochG) measures or examined the relationship between action potential (AP) amplitude and speech perception in noise (SPIN) performance in normal-hearing individuals with tinnitus. METHOD: Twenty participants with nonpulsatile tinnitus lasting at least 3 months were recruited for the tinnitus group. An additional 20 age-match

Individual and Situational Predictors of Threatening Dream Content During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Previous studies have examined how the COVID-19 pandemic affected dream recall, dream content, and nightmares. However, relatively little attention has been devoted to the individual and situational factors associated with pandemic-induced changes in dreams. The threat simulation theory of dreaming predicts that threatening situations in our waking life (situational factors) influence threatening dream content. At the same time, individual differences predispose some people to be more prone to experiencing threatening dreams more frequently than others. Using a large Finnish sample of prospect

A Common CD36 Variant and the Genetic Landscape of Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Individuals of African Ancestry.

IMPORTANCE: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a major cause of heart failure that disproportionately affects individuals of African genetic ancestry (AFR), among whom familial clustering of disease is also more pronounced relative to those of European ancestry (EUR). However, established monogenic DCM genes, identified primarily in EUR populations, explain a smaller proportion of DCM cases in AFR populations. A recent study identified a common AFR-specific nonsense variant in CD36 that accounts for a substantial burden of DCM in AFR. How the risk and population impact of this variant compare wit

Inflammation is associated with altered functional connectivity of the cingulate cortex in individuals with subthreshold depression.

Subthreshold depression (StD) represents a critical prodromal phase that often precedes clinical depression. Identifying biological indicators during this stage is essential for the prophylaxis of major depressive disorder. The present study investigated the interplay between serum pro-inflammatory cytokines, functional connectivity (FC) within subregions of the cingulate cortex (CC), and psychometric profiles in an StD cohort. The study included 126 participants with StD and 104 healthy controls. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data, psychological assessments [Center for E

Lifetime Adversity Among Individuals With Early Phase Psychosis and Comorbid Substance Misuse.

BACKGROUND: Adverse events and substance misuse are rarely examined together among people in early phase psychosis, although both are frequently examined in isolation given their high prevalence in this population. As a result, the frequency of the three-way overlap is unclear. Moreover, adverse events are often limited to childhood abuse and rarely include illness-related events (e.g., threatening hallucinations). This study aims to explore the overlap between these variables and provide a more detailed understanding of adversity in this population and their desire to disclose experiences. M
