INTRODUCTION: High-grade serous primary peritoneal cancer is highly sensitive to platinum-based chemotherapy with response rates above 80%. Incidence of immediate hypersensitivity reactions to carboplatin is estimated to be between 15% and 20%, usually seen after a mean of 6-8 infusions, with patients developing moderate to severe reactions.
CASE REPORT: A 62-year-old female patient with stage IIIC primary high-grade serous carcinoma of the peritoneum was diagnosed and chemotherapy with carboplatin and Paclitaxel was indicated by the oncology service and patient shows response. At 6 months th

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) represents an innovative approach to treat or prevent peritoneal metastasis. However, given the morbidity that can be associated with this procedure, adequate patient selection facilitated by scoring systems for primary peritoneal surface malignancy (PSM) is paramount to ensure equitable morbidity as well as acceptable survival outcome.
METHODS: Seminal studies on scoring systems for PSM that have laid the foundation for adequate patient selection and prognostication are spotlighted.
RESULTS: Quanti

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Peritoneal metastasis is a manifestation of advanced cancer often associated with a poor prognosis and poor response to treatment. Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge is a commonly used medicinal material in traditional Chinese medicine with various biological activities. In patients with cancer, Astragalus membranaceus has demonstrated anti-tumor effects, immune regulation, postoperative recurrence and metastasis prevention, and survival prolongation.
AIM OF THE STUDY: Peritoneal metastasis results from tumor cell and peritoneal microenvironment co-evolutio

Although peritoneal cytology has been shown to be an independant predictor of survival in endometrial cancer, the present international federation of gynaecology and obstetrics (FIGO) staging system does not involve it for risk stratification. This work aimed to assess the prognostic importance of PPC (positive peritoneal cytology) in endometrial cancer patients. The medical profiles of uterine carcinoma patients were reviewed who were referred to Khatam-al- Anbia and Bahman hospital within 2010-2019. The factors possibly affecting peritoneal fluid cytology in all patients were analysed. There

B cells are key mediators of humoral immunity. Mature B cells fall into various sub-classes that can be separated by their ontogeny, expression of cell surface markers, anatomical location, and function. B1 subsets play important roles in natural immunity and constitute the majority of B cells in newborns. In the adult, B1 cells predominate in the pleural and peritoneal cavities, while the mature B2 follicular subset makes up the major fraction of B cells in lymphoid tissue, although important subsets of antibody-secreting B1 cells are also present at these sites. B1 cells are the main produce

Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a renal replacement technique that requires repeated exposure of the peritoneum to hyperosmolar PD fluids (PDFs). Unfortunately, it promotes alterations of the peritoneal membrane (PM) that affects its functionality, including mesothelial-mesenchymal transition (MMT) of mesothelial cells (MCs), inflammation, angiogenesis, and fibrosis. Glucose is the most used osmotic agent, but it is known to be at least partially responsible, together with its degradation products (GDP), for those changes. Therefore, there is a need for more biocompatible osmotic agent

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is an advanced malignancy that is not sensitive to systemic conventional chemotherapy. Treatment options for PC are usually palliative rather than curative. Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy are associated with limited efficacy in patients with PC. However, the peritoneum can produce effective immunity by inducing T-lymphocyte recruitment and proliferation, and the unique immune environment of the peritoneum provides the rationale for IP immunotherapy in PC.

Peritoneal fibrosis can occur in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD), and patients with severe peritoneal fibrosis have high morbidity and mortality. Peritonitis, high-glucose peritoneal dialysis fluid, and a long period of PD precipitate the onset of peritoneal fibrosis. An animal study of peritoneal fibrosis is needed due to the limitations of human and in vitro studies. However, most animal models do not mimic clinical conditions. To study peritoneal fibrosis, we developed a clinically relevant murine model by implanting a peritoneal catheter and injecting 2.5% high-glucose PD flui…

Cefazolin-induced neurotoxicity with the documented toxic concentration has not been reported in uremic patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). We described an elderly female on CAPD for years presented with newly-onset status epilepticus. Her body weight was 60 kg. And she had received intraperitoneal ceftazidime and cefazolin 1.5 g once daily for her CAPD peritonitis 5 days earlier. She was disoriented but afebrile with normal blood pressure. Laboratory data showed WBC 18,480/uL, pH 6.93, HCO3 - 8.5 mmol/L, free Ca2+ 3.5 mmol/L, and albumin 2.8 g/dL. Although antiepilep…

BACKGROUND: Long-term success of peritoneal dialysis relies on the integrity of the peritoneal membrane. This proof-of-concept study addressed the hypothesis that fibrosis is already present in the membrane at pre-dialysis and that the membrane status is related to the individual's uraemic fingerprint.
METHODS: A clinical-mechanistic, transversal, single-centre study was conducted. Pre-dialysis peritoneal biopsies were scored considering the submesothelial compact zone thickness (STM), vasculopathy and inflammation. We investigated if the membrane status could be inferred from a panel of prot

PURPOSE: It is still debatable whether surgical staging of endometrial cancer (EC) should include sampling of peritoneal cytology (PC) and for what purpose this should be done. The aim of our study was to determine the significance of peritoneal cytology in EC and its association with other histological and clinical parameters.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study that comprises of results from 357 patients with EC that were operated in our center in the previous nine years. Patients were divided into two groups: the first group with a positive and the second group with a negative PC.

A 35-year-old women with sigmoid cancer(pT4aN1aM0, pStage Ⅲb)underwent laparoscopic sigmoidectomy. She had 8 courses of CapeOX for adjuvant chemotherapy, but follow up CT scan 1 year after the operation detected intraabdominal nodules in anastomotic site and in left lower quadrant of abdomen. After 10 courses of IRIS plus bevacizumab, the both intraabdominal nodules decreased in size. Robot assisted laparoscopic lower anterior resection and laparoscopic disseminated nodule resection were performed. The patient had no postoperative complications and the postoperative course was good. She remain

BACKGROUND Non-specific pain of connective tissues and joints is one of the most frequently expressed patient concerns in everyday practice. The most common cause is osteo-degenerative changes in the cartilage and/or joint system. Metastatic calcification is a rare and initially often overlooked cause of persistent, therapy-resistant pain of connective tissues and joint apparatus in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on dialysis therapy. These calcifications are induced by persistent hyperphosphatemia/hyperparathyroidism and can occur in various organs, including joints, tendons, heart va

Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a rare complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD) that is usually seen in patients with encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. We present a case of SBO that was caused by mechanical obstruction from omental adhesions around the PD catheter. This is the case of 71-year-old female with end-stage renal disease who was recently started on PD and presented with recurrent syncopal episodes and altered mental status. During hospitalization, the patient began experiencing incomplete drainage of the PD solution. Abdominal computerized tomography revealed SBO with a transitio

OBJECTIVE: To describe the authors' experience diagnosing and managing intra-abdominal complications following robotic peritoneal flap vaginoplasty. The peritoneal flap vaginoplasty is a technique used to achieve consistent vaginal depth regardless of available natal tissue. Intra-abdominal complications following robotic peritoneal flap creation are rare but prompt diagnosis and management is critical to preventing patient harm. Given the infancy of the technique there is limited data on associated complications and their management.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review identified patients un

Disseminated peritoneal leiomyomatosis (DPL) is a benign metastasis of leiomyoma mimicking metastasis of malignancy. It usually affects premenopausal women. Malignant transformation is a rare clinical scenario of DPL. However, its etiology is unknown with unusual growth patterns, either of which makes the diagnosis difficult. It was postulated that the pathophysiology of DPL is metaplasia of mesothelial cells under the effect of hormonal stimulation. Hence, we reported the case of a 62-year-old woman with a history of left breast cancer, who presented with DPL and metastasis to the lung with m
