Effect of captive bolt gun length on brain trauma and post-stunning hind limb activity in finished cattle Bos taurus.

Hind limb post stunning kicking in properly stunned unconscious cattle is a safety hazard for employees. Three different captive bolt lengths of 15.2 cm (STRD), 16.5 cm (MED), and 17.8 cm (LON) were evaluated for amount of tissue damage and hind limb kicking in a Jarvis USSS-1 pneumatic stunner. The air pressure setting was 1378.95 to 1447.90 pKa for all captive bolts. All 45 test cattle were rendered unconscious with a single shot. There was a trend (P = .06) for less kicking to occur when the 16.5 cm length bolt was used in the stunner. Visual appraisal of the brains on the split heads indic

Imaging Features of isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy.

The hypoglossal nerve gives motor innervation to the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the tongue. Pathology of this nerve affects the balanced action of the genioglossus muscle causing tongue deviation toward the weak side. Clinically, hypoglossal nerve palsy manifests with difficulty chewing, swallowing and with dysarthric speech herein, we review the anatomy of the hypoglossal nerve as well as common and infrequent lesions that can affect this nerve along its course.

Stable long-term BCI-enabled communication in ALS and locked-in syndrome using LFP signals.

Restoring communication for people with locked-in syndrome remains a challenging clinical problem without a reliable solution. Recent studies have shown that people with paralysis can use brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on intracortical spiking activity to efficiently type messages. However, due to neuronal signal instability, most intracortical BCIs have required frequent calibration and continuous assistance of skilled engineers to maintain performance. Here, an individual with locked-in syndrome due to brain stem stroke and an individual with tetraplegia secondary to amyotrophic late…

Intercellular communication by extracellular vesicles with emphasis on the roles of cordocytes in the human brain. An ultrastructural study.

We describe in this work the presence of extracellular vesicles (EVs) along different cell types, especially cordocytes, in various clinical conditions of the human brain (atherothrombotic disease, cerebral tumors, hygroma durae matris, intracerebral cysts, Moyamoya disease and parenchymatous hematoma) using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). EVs, illustrated as exosomes and microvesicles, were causally related to cell-to-cell communication, and other vital functions of resident cells around the brain parenchyma, either around the cortical vessels or into the subarachnoid space and the re

Cell-based therapy to promote angiogenesis in the brain following ischemic damage.

Cell-based therapies are a novel approach for regeneration of microvasculature. We have shown that administration of CD34-positive cells, the rich cell fraction of endothelial progenitor cells, after stroke induces angiogenesis that results in enhanced endogenous neurogenesis and functional recovery in a murine model. Moreover, injury-induced neurogenesis occurs in the human brain following a stroke during the acute to sub-acute period. Based on these observations, clinical trials of cell therapies that aim to regenerate micro-circulation in the brain following a stroke are ongoing worldwide.

Tuberculous brainstem abscess: case report.

OBJECTIVE: Tuberculous brainstem abscess is a clinically rare condition with potentially high mortality and morbidity. We present this report to draw attention to the importance of early recognition and adequate treatment of tuberculous brainstem abscess. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old man complained of longstanding fever, headache, and weakness followed by development of progressive slurred speech and hemiparesis of the right extremities. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large thick-walled cystic lesion lying within the brainstem. INTERVENTION: The patient demonstrated a remarkab

Event-related brain potentials: report order and task switch on multidimensional stimuli identification.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of order of reporting stimulus dimension in multidimensional stimulus identification using a switch-task paradigm. Participants were required to identify each two-dimensional symbol by pushing the corresponding buttons on the keypad on which there were two columns representing the two dimensions, part and shape. The two orders of report were Order Part/Shape and Order Shape/Part. There was a task cue prior to each presentation of a symbol indicating the particular report order the participants should perform. The cue changed randomly. Both beh

Tectal plate cavernoma-a special entity of brainstem cavernomas: case report.

BACKGROUND: Brainstem cavernous malformations (BCM) have a high incidence of bleeding and rebleeding and carry a high rate of neurologic morbility. Locations in the tectal plate that represent a small percentage of BCMs have rarely been reported in the literature. The authors present a case of a patient with such localization who was successfully operated. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 24-year-old male known for having a tectal plate cavernoma with obstructive hydrocephalus, previously treated by shunting in another hospital, was admitted in our institute because of increasing headaches, gradual drowsi

Idiopathic Parkinson's disease: possible routes by which vulnerable neuronal types may be subject to neuroinvasion by an unknown pathogen.

The progressive, neurodegenerative process underlying idiopathic Parkinson's disease is associated with the formation of proteinaceous inclusion bodies that involve a few susceptible neuronal types of the human nervous system. In the lower brain stem, the process begins in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve and advances from there essentially upwards through susceptible regions of the medulla oblongata, pontine tegmentum, midbrain, and basal forebrain until it reaches the cerebral cortex. With time, multiple components of the autonomic, limbic, and motor systems become severely impair…

[Symmetrical necrosis in the gray matter of the brainstem and spinal cord. Two adult cases of anoxic encephalopathy].

We describe distinctive necrosis in the brainstem of two adult patients of anoxic encephalopathy. The patients were a 75-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman, who were resuscitated after cardiac arrest that lasted about 20 minutes and artificially ventilated. The first patient remained comatose without recovery of brainstem reflexes and had persistent hypotension requiring continuous infusion of catecholamine until death that occurred two weeks after the onset of illness. In the second patient, her general circulation recovered on the next day resuscitation, and traces of brainstem reflexes r

Trauma to the pontomesencephalic brainstem-a major clue to the prognosis of severe traumatic brain injury.

The objective of this study was to assess the significance of an injury to the pontomesencephalic brainstem in severe traumatic brain injury [Glasgow coma score (GCS) below 8]. Forty victims of severe traumatic brain injury with and with out compounding pathologies almost equally distributed among both groups were studied. The outcome (mean follow-up, 11.3 months) was assessed by means of the Glasgow outcome score (GOS) and of the Disability rating scale (DRS). Injury of the brainstem was detected by electrophysiological investigation (evoked potentials, brainstem reflexes) and magnetic resona

Carotid-cavernous fistula with brainstem congestion mimicking tumor on MRI.

Article abstract-A 65-year-old woman presented with a left abduction deficit and "red eye," mild proptosis, chemosis, arterialization of the conjunctival vessels, intention tremor, and bilateral pyramidal signs. MRI showed significant left-sided brainstem involvement that mimicked a tumor. Right hemiplegia ensued 1 week later. Venous congestion of the brainstem with hemiplegia resulting from shunting of blood flow from both carotid arteries is an extremely rare complication of carotid-cavernous fistula.

Cerebellum and brainstem vasculopathy in systemic lupus erythematosus: two clinico-pathological cases.

The case histories are reported of two patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who developed fatal neurological involvement, each presenting with cerebellar and brainstem signs. Neuro-pathological changes were confined to the cerebellum and brainstem, with clear evidence of a small vessel vasculopathy. The predominant histological abnormalities were multiple perivascular haemorrhages in one case and classical vasculitic changes in the other.
