Neonatal intensive care admission for term neonates and subsequent childhood mortality: a retrospective linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission among term neonates is a rare event. The aim of this study was to study the association of the NICU admission of term neonates on the risk of long-term childhood mortality. METHODS: A single-center case-control retrospective study between 2005 and 2019, including all in-hospital ≥ 37 weeks' gestation singleton live-born neonates. The center perinatal database was linked with the birth and death certificate registries of the Israeli Ministry of Internal Affairs. The primary aim of the study was to study the association between NICU admi

Maternal education and its association with maternal and neonatal adverse outcomes in live births conceived using medically assisted reproduction (MAR).

BACKGROUND: To examine the association between maternal education and adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes in women who conceived using medically assisted reproduction, which included fertility medications, intrauterine insemination, or in vitro fertilization. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study utilizing the US Vital Statistics data set on national birth certificates from 2016 to 2020. Women with live, non-anomalous singletons who conceived using MAR and had education status of the birthing female partner recorded were included. Patients were stratified into two groups: bach

Cognitive Impairment and Self-Reported Dementia in UK Retired Professional Soccer Players: A Cross Sectional Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies based on death certificates have found professional soccer players were more likely to die with neurodegenerative diseases, including dementia. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether retired professional male soccer players would perform worse on cognitive tests and be more likely to self-report dementia diagnosis than general population control men. METHODS: A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted between August 2020 and October 2021 in the United Kingdom (UK). Professional soccer players were recruited through different soccer clubs in Engl

Hypospadias prevalence by severity and associated risk factors: A population-based active surveillance analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Hypospadias is one of the most common congenital anomalies. Trends of hypospadias prevalence by severity are not well reported. Most prevalence studies consist of pooled data from different countries or states suffer from low data quality due to inconsistent methodologies, limited variables, and lack of categorization of hypospadias severity. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to examine the prevalence of hypospadias by degrees of severity and associated risk factors using combined data sources from a stable and well-defined population. STUDY DESIGN: The study population

Breastfeeding practices and associations with pregnancy, maternal and infant characteristics in Australia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Exclusive breastfeeding to six months of age is a major global public health priority. Several characteristics are known to be associated with early cessation of breastfeeding, however, limited evidence exists regarding whether women's reported reasons for cessation are associated with maternal, pregnancy and infant characteristics. The aims of this study were to: i) describe women's reported intention to breastfeed and their subsequent breastfeeding practices; ii) describe women's reported reasons for breastfeeding cessation prior to the infant being five months of age; and iii) e

HIV testing during pregnancy among women with a recent live birth-Seven US States, 2016-2019.

BACKGROUND: Although the United States has made progress in reducing the transmission of HIV from mother-to-child, it has not yet met the goal of reducing such transmissions to 70%. Self-reported HIV testing varied by state of residence. Approximately, two in three women reported that their health care provider asked them about HIV testing during prenatal care, and 82.3% of those asked reported receipt of a test. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was (1) to examine the prevalence of receipt of an HIV test during pregnancy and (2) to examine differences in HIV testing during pregnancy by race/

Prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in COVID-19 related mortality in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Several cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and sequelae have been associated with COVID-19. Little is known about the distribution of CVD conditions in COVID-19 related deaths in the US population. METHODS: The public-use dataset by CDC, "Conditions Contributing to COVID-19 Deaths, by State and Age, Provisional 2020-2021", was abstracted as of August 1, 2021. A descriptive analysis was conducted to explore the overall and age-specific prevalence of various CVD and risk factors grouped by pre-specified ICD-10 codes amongst COVID-19 patient deaths. Respective trends over the

Causes of death among 93.637 hip fracture patients- data based on the Danish National Registry of causes of death.

PURPOSE: Excess mortality among hip fracture patients is well documented. Less is known, however, about the causes of death in this group of patients, although existing literature suggests that bronchopneumonia and cardiovascular diseases constitute the leading causes of death. In this study, we investigated the causes of death in Danish hip fracture patients, who died within 30-days after sustaining a hip fracture, with a focus on differences in causes of death between men and women and between different age groups. Furthermore, the frequency of potentially preventable causes of death such as

Prospective trial of different antimicrobial treatment durations for presumptive canine urinary tract infections.

BACKGROUND: Avoidance of unnecessary antimicrobial administration is a key tenet of antimicrobial stewardship; knowing the optimal duration of therapy obviates over-treatment. However, little research has been performed to establish course lengths for common canine infections. In clinical practice, antimicrobial therapy is frequently prescribed in dogs presenting lower urinary tract signs (haematuria, pollakiuria and dysuria/stranguria). The proposed length of treatment in International Consensus guidelines has decreased with each iteration, but these recommendations remain arbitrary and large

Maternal and perinatal factors are associated with risk of pediatric central nervous system tumors and poorer survival after diagnosis.

Central nervous system (CNS) tumors are the most common solid tumors in children. Findings on the role of maternal and perinatal factors on the susceptibility or outcome of these tumors are inconclusive. Therefore, we investigated the association between these early-life factors, risk, and survival of pediatric CNS tumors, using data from one of the world's largest and most diverse cancer registries. Information on pediatric CNS tumor cases (n = 1950) for the period 1995-2011 was obtained from the Texas Cancer Registry. Birth certificate controls were frequency-matched on birth year at a ratio

The Association between Having a Preterm Birth and Later Maternal Mental Health: An Analysis of U.S. Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System Data.

INTRODUCTION: Although previous studies have found a relationship between having a preterm birth and maternal depression, methodologic issues may have limited the generalizability of results. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between having a preterm birth and postpartum depressive symptoms using a large, population-based sample of U.S. women. METHODS: This secondary data analysis used 2012-2014 U.S. Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data (N = 89,366). Data on the exposure, preterm birth, were obtained from birth certificates. Infants born at 32 to les

Risk of non-syndromic orofacial clefts by maternal rural-urban residence and race/ethnicity: A population-based case-control study in Washington State 1989-2014.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts (OFC) have multifactorial aetiology. Established risk factors explain a small proportion of cases. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate OFC risk by maternal rural residence and race/ethnicity, and test whether these associations changed after US-mandated folic acid fortification. METHODS: This population-based case-control study included all non-syndromic OFC cases among Washington State singleton livebirths between 1989-2014 and birth year-matched controls. Data sources included birth certificates and hospital records. Logistic regression estimated odds ratios (OR) and 95% c
