Magnetoelectrical stimulation of motor cortex in children with motor disturbances.

Transcranial magnetoelectrical stimulation (TMS) is now widely used as a diagnostic tool in adults. In this study we report our experiences with this technique in children with central motor disturbances. We used a Cadwell MES10 magnetoelectrical stimulator with a maximal magnetic field of 2 tesla. The stimulation procedure followed a standardized protocol, with the patients being as relaxed as possible in order to avoid contamination of parameters with different preinnervational levels. Stimulation data were compared to a data base obtained in 58 normal children. The first group of patients c

[Post-radiation brachial plexus disease. Clinical and neurophysiological study].

Nine patients who developed 11 brachial plexopathies after a radiation therapy for cancer have been studied. They clinically showed heterogeneity in the common criteria used to establish the differential diagnosis between post-radiation and tumoral brachial plexopathies (PRBP and TBP) and specially within the period free of symptoms from the end of radiation, and the presence and intensity of pain. Neurophysiological studies showed a diffused neurogenic lesion with muscular denervation associated to motor and sensory nerve conduction impairment on proximal segments of the arm. Somatosensory ev

Long-term analysis of patients having surgical treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome.

This retrospective study of 100 patients who had surgical treatment for their carpal tunnel syndrome was performed to determine what factors were associated with long-term success or failure. One hundred thirty hands were treated surgically with an average follow-up of 4 years (range, 2 to 6 years). All patients were given a course of conservative treatment that included steroid injection(s) and splinting until the patients were refractory to such therapy. Over 250 injections were given (117 wrists), with the average benefit time of 27 weeks (range 0 to 330). Most patients received two to thre

An hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy transmitted as an X-linked recessive trait.

Five members of a single family presented with neuropathic deformities and ulceration of the feet developing in the first and second decades of life, and progressed slowly over many years. In this form of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy, there was minimal tendon reflex impairment, cutaneous sensory impairment was restricted to the feet, and there was no autonomic dysfunction. The only neurophysiological abnormality was that of reduced or absent sural nerve sensory action potentials. Sural nerve biopsies taken from two affected family members showed changes of a chronic neuropathy w

Reversibility of neurological deficits in vitamin B12 deficiency.

A female patient with subacute neurological deficits secondary to an hereditary vitamin B12 deficiency was repeatedly examined clinically and neurophysiologically. It is concluded that neurological normalization after treatment with vitamin B12 also occurs within the CNS. Such normalization takes place soon after initiating treatment and probably reflects other neuronal mechanisms that remyelination, i.e. recovery from conduction block in fast somatosensory pathways and/or improvement of synaptic transmission.

Comparison of the metabolic and toxic effects of 2-chloropropionate and dichloroacetate.

The metabolic and toxic effects of 2-chloropropionate and dichloroacetate, activators of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, were compared. In 4-hr fasted mice, the oral LD50 values for 2-chloropropionate and dichloroacetate were 15.4 +/- 0.1 and 32.1 +/- 1.1 mmol/kg, respectively. In suckling rats, both compounds effectively lowered blood lactate and glucose levels and increased blood ketone bodies. Although comparable effects were brought about by both compounds on other metabolites, dichloroacetate caused a greater increase in blood ketone bodies. In a prolonged oral toxicity study using ma

The rat anococcygeus muscle and its response to nerve stimulation and to some drugs.

1. A new smooth muscle preparation, the rat anococcygeus muscle, is described. The muscle is paired, thin, consists of smooth muscle only and the muscle cells are organized in parallel bundles. It has a dense adrenergic innervation distributed throughout the muscle but apparently no cholinergic innervation. The muscles are easily isolated.2. The muscle contracts to noradrenaline, acetylcholine, furmethide, 5-hydroxytryptamine, but not to histamine. Isoprenaline produces contraction at high concentrations. The effects of noradrenaline and acetylcholine are blocked by phentolamine and atropine r

Electroactive biomaterials modulating ion channels in nervous system regeneration.

Traumatic injury to the central and peripheral nervous systems disrupts the electrophysiological microenvironment through persistent ionic dysregulation and maladaptive ion channel remodeling, creating conditions that are fundamentally hostile to endogenous repair. Conventional biomaterials, while offering structural support, remain electrically inert and unable to reconstitute the bioelectric signaling context essential for functional neural regeneration. Here, we review the emerging class of electroactive biomaterials, encompassing conductive and piezoelectric platforms that are engineered t

Neural correlates of learning speed reveal developmental differences in memory.

A great deal of research has tried to understand the nature of children's memory representations across time-especially in regard to how young learners navigate the conflicting pressures of remembering specific details of their experiences versus learning about more general aspects of their worlds. Here, we conducted a preregistered, exploratory analysis of developmental fMRI data to ask how learning speed impacts memory formation, and probe the idea that developmental differences in the balance of specific and general memory might be partially explained by the rate at which children (N = 35,

An Introduction to Structural Phylogenetics for Biomedical Sciences.

Structural phylogenetics offers a powerful framework for understanding the molecular basis of neural function and disease by combining evolutionary analysis with three-dimensional protein structure. While traditional protein-based phylogenetics relies mostly on amino acid sequences, recent advances in computational structure prediction have accelerated the integration of protein tertiary structures into phylogenetic studies. Since structure is more conserved than sequence, this approach may provide increased resolution in cases of high sequence divergence or mutational saturation, common issue

Identification and characterization of human retinal stem cells capable of retinal regeneration.

Human retinal stem cells hold great promise in regenerative medicine, yet their existence and characteristics remain elusive. Here, we performed single-cell multiomics and spatial transcriptomics of human fetal retinas and uncovered a cell subpopulation, human neural retinal stem-like cells (hNRSCs), distinct from retinal pigment epithelium stem-like cells and traditional retinal progenitor cells. We found that these hNRSCs reside in the peripheral retina in the ciliary marginal zone, exhibiting substantial self-renewal and differentiation potential. We conducted single-cell and spatial transc

Enhancement of stability and electronic properties of ultra-high nickel cathodes by aluminium and boron codoping studied by combined density functional theory and neural network models.

The rapid growth of electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems has intensified research on nickel-rich lithium-ion battery cathodes, prized for their high energy density, superior electrochemical performance, and reduced material costs. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are integrated with machine learning (ML) techniques using DeePMD-based neural network models to investigate the structural stability and electronic properties of Ni-rich cathode materials, including LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NMC622), LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811), and LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 (NM

Impact of tinnitus on chirp-evoked auditory brainstem response recorded using maximum length sequences.

Tinnitus is considered a potential consequence of cochlear synaptopathy. While animal studies have shown that this neural deafferentation reduces wave I amplitudes of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) at suprathreshold levels, studies in humans with tinnitus have reported conflicting results. To enhance the sensitivity of ABRs in detecting neurophysiological conditions associated with tinnitus, this study aimed to examine chirp-evoked ABRs in normal-hearing individuals with tinnitus using the maximum length sequence (MLS) technique. Chirp stimuli improve synchronous neural discharge during

Regenerative medicine for spinal cord injury using induced pluripotent stem cells: from animals to humans.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in permanent neurological dysfunction and neuropathic pain. To address this pathology, we recently conducted a clinical study in which we transplanted neural precursor cells (NPCs) derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells into patients during the subacute phase of SCI. One of the therapeutic mechanisms of cell transplantation is the formation of synaptic connections with the host's neural tissues, which we demonstrated using a chemogenetic tool. In addition, we have developed innovative strategies to enhance the effectiveness of cell transplantation th

Multi input-Multi output 3D CNN for dementia severity assessment with incomplete multimodal data.

Alzheimer's Disease is the most common cause of dementia, whose progression spans in different stages, from very mild cognitive impairment to mild and severe conditions. In clinical trials, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) are mostly used for the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders since they provide volumetric and metabolic function information of the brain, respectively. In recent years, Deep Learning (DL) has been employed in medical imaging with promising results. Moreover, the use of the deep neural networks, especially Convolutional Neura

Neural network analysis of pharyngeal sounds can detect obstructive upper respiratory disease in brachycephalic dogs.

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) is a highly prevalent respiratory disease affecting popular short-faced dog breeds such as Pugs and French bulldogs. BOAS causes significant morbidity, leading to poor exercise tolerance, sleep disorders and a shortened lifespan. Despite its severity, the disease is commonly missed by owners or disregarded by veterinary practitioners. A key clinical sign of BOAS is stertor, a low-frequency snoring sound. In recent years, a functional grading scheme has been introduced to semi-objectively grade BOAS based on the presence of stertor and other abn
