Cat-scratch disease is an infection by Bartonella henselea and resolves spontaneously. We present a case of untypical Bartonella infection which was misinterpreted by MRI as a soft-tissue sarcoma of the upper arm. The histological findings of an incision biopsy were unspecific, without signs of malignancy. Tuberculous glossitis is a rare entity that has been described sporadically. Primary tuberculous glossitis, as described in this case report, is still exceptional. A 25-year-old male with no known immunosuppressive disorder presented with a tuberculoma at the base of his tongue. PURPOSE: Because the influence of papillomavirus (HPV) in pterygium pathogenesis is controversial, the aim of this study was to identify whether it is present in the pterygia lesions in our region.
METHODS: Thirty-six patients with unilateral primary pterygia were submitted to excision of pterygia and a sample of normal conjunctiva. Tissues were submitted to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) evaluation for papillomavirus DNA detection.

This case report describes congenital nephrotic syndrome in a 2-month-old girl associated with cytomegalovirus infection. Histological examination on renal biopsy showed diffuse mesangial sclerosis and cytomegalic inclusion bodies in the tubular cells and in some glomeruli. A 42-year-old white man presented with a lower eyelid lesion and recurrent condylomata acuminata of his genitalia due to human papillomavirus (HPV) type 6a. Our aim was to determine the presence of Rickettsia spp. and Bartonella spp. in Ctenocephalides felis and Ctenocephalides canis from La Rioja (Spain). A total of 88 specimens were tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using gltA and ompB genes as targets for Rickettsia spp., and 16S rRNA and ribC genes for Bartonella spp. Rickettsia felis-like (28.4%), Bartonella clarridgeiae (6.8%), and Bartonella henselae (3.4%) were detected in Ctenocephalides spp. Other Bartonella sp. different from B. clarridgeiae and B. henselae could also be present in fleas from La Rioja.

Scedosporium species (sp) can cause disseminated disease in lung transplant recipients with almost universal mortality. We present 2 cases of disseminated disease, which responded to voriconazole therapy. In the first case, polymerase chain reaction was used to make a rapid diagnosis and allow differentiation from Aspergillus sp. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is required for efficient recognition of bacterial infections. We investigated an association between 2 TLR4 mutations (Asp(299)Gly and Thr(399)Ile) and meningococcal disease in 197 patients and 214 healthy controls by allele-specific real time polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing. Histological examination of the heart including the cardiac conduction system revealed lymphocytic infiltrations of the sinu-atrial node and perivascular infiltration in the atrio-ventricular region.
