BACKGROUND: Irreparable rotator cuff tears (ICTs) remain a challenging treatment dilemma. Superior capsule reconstruction (SCR) acts as a static stabilizer to decrease superior humeral head migration. Latissimus dorsi tendon transfers (LDTs) dynamically decrease superior humeral head migration and improve external rotation. We hypothesized that the dynamic stabilizing effect of the latissimus transfer plus the static stabilizing effect of SCR would improve shoulder kinematics in shoulders with ICTs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders were tested in 5 conditions: (1)

PURPOSE: The aim of this prospective study was to perform a clinical and radiologic evaluation of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). The hypothesis is that there is a correlation between the pre-operative degeneration state of the gluteal muscle-tendinous unit and the clinical outcome in terms of functional recovery.
METHODS: Fifty-five patients have met inclusion criteria. All patients included in the sample were subjected to clinical evaluation. The ultrasound examination of the patients of the study was conducted and the following parameters were assessed: Thickness in mm of

Extensor mechanism deficiency in the knee may occur due to neglected patellar and quadriceps tendons rupture or may be caused by chronic fractures of the patella. Older patients can tolerate nonunion with impaired function including extension limitation or persistent muscle weakness. In young patients, performing rigid internal fixation with reoperation should be considered when a nonunion occurs. However, delayed and neglected nonunion in patella fractures require performing different surgical procedures. We report two cases, operated for a patella fracture, in whom nonunion occurred and acco…

A desirable multi-functional nanofibrous membrane (NFM) for prevention of postoperative tendon adhesion should be endowed with abilities to prevent fibroblast attachment and penetration and exert anti-inflammation effects. To meet this need, hyaluronic acid (HA)/ibuprofen (IBU) (HAI) NFMs were prepared by electrospinning, followed by dual ionic crosslinking with FeCl3 (HAIF NFMs) and covalent crosslinking with 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE) to produce HAIFB NFMs. It is expected that the multi-functional NFMs will act as a physical barrier to prevent fibroblast penetration, HA will redu

PURPOSE: The term 'stiffness' is commonly used in the literature to refer to various components of 'hyperresistance' by which spastic muscles oppose to their passive lengthening, especially in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Originally, stiffness consists of mechanical resistance to passive movement in the absence of any muscle activation. Increased muscle stiffness in CP therefore refers to alterations to the mechanical properties of the tissue. It is closely linked to muscle shortening, yet the two phenomena are not equivalent. Both increased stiffness and shortening are present early in

BACKGROUND: Simple tenotomy and anchor tenodesis are commonly used in treatment of long biceps tendon (LHB) pathologies. The tenotomy can result in biceps distalization or cosmetic deformities. A novel loop Tenodesis Technique (LTD) could prevent a distalization of the biceps muscle without the risk of implant associated complications. The purpose of this study was to investigate the biomechanical aspects of the novel LTD compared to a standard tenotomy of the LHB. It has been hypothesized that the novel technique will show biomechanical superiority in terms of resistance and distalization.

Giant cell tumour of tendon sheath (GCTTS) is considered benign, but well known for its high recurrence rate. Bone involvement of GCTTS is not uncommon and closely related to local recurrence after surgery. Radiologic findings of bone involvement are pressure erosion, circumscribed cortical destruction and degenerative arthritis. The treatment involves complete resection of tumor including bone lesion. This case presents GCTTS of young male patient with multiple bone destructions of different state, treated by complete excision of the tumor and curettage of bone lesion.

In rare cases of ankle fracture dislocation, the posterior tibial muscle tendon (TP tendon) is incarcerated between the tibia and fibula, thereby impeding reduction. Here we describe a case that presented with such a condition, in which ankle reduction was achieved and surgical repair of the incarcerated TP was delayed. The subject was a 30-year-old male who sustained a fracture dislocation of the left ankle (AO:44-C1.3) in a motorbike accident. After repairing the ankle dislocation, external fixation was performed and osteosynthesis was conducted 10 days after the injury. Plate fixation for t

CONTEXT: A recent review or article reported that thermal agents (TA) or physical activity (PA) can increase range of motion (ROM) and that the combination of TA with stretching is superior to performing stretching only. However, since ROM is affected by the psychological factors, it is questionable whether these studies measured the effect of these interventions on muscle flexibility. By measuring muscle stiffness, the authors attempted to evaluate the effect these interventions on muscle flexibility.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the individual effects of TA and PA on muscle flexibility, as well as

INTRODUCTION: The peroneus brevis tendon (PBT) inserts into the proximal aspect of the 5th metatarsal. Metatarsal bone fractures are encountered to be the most common fractures in the foot with predominantly fractures at the base of the fifth metatarsal bone. Mechanism of injury and treatment of the proximal 5th metatarsal fractures vary due to the complex anatomy and diverse biomechanical properties. The purpose of this study was to analyze the footprint of the PBT with regards to the proximal 5th metatarsal fractures and to define a "safe zone" for hook plate placement.

Achilles tendon ruptures are common injuries that often lead to long-term functional deficits. Despite the prevalence of these injuries, the mechanism responsible for limited function has not yet been established. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to present preliminary findings that support a hypothesis that skeletal muscle remodeling is the driving factor of poor outcomes in some patients. Biomechanical and ultrasonography assessments were performed on a patient that presented with poor functional outcomes 2.5 years after a surgically-repaired acute Achilles tendon rupture. Single-leg

Tibial dorsiflexion osteotomy for recalcitrant equinus in clubfeet is reported to have a high recurrence rate with growth. We present the results of closing wedge tibial dorsiflexion osteotomy and tendon transfers in 15 feet and 11 patients. The mean age at presentation was 7 (range: 3.98-12.38) years. At a mean follow-up of 4.16 (range: 2.09-6.87) years, 11 of the 15 feet remained corrected. Mean correction of the dorsiflexion was 24.5° and mean correction of anterior distal tibial angle was 10.9° at final review. Muscle rebalancing appears to influence bone remodeling and reduce recurrence o
