Bifrontal electroconvulsive therapy changed regional homogeneity and functional connectivity of left angular gyrus in major depressive disorder.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a rapid and effective treatment for MDD. However, the mechanism of ECT for MDD has not been clarified. In this study, we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to explore the mechanism of ECT. Two groups of subjects were recruited: healthy controls (HCs) and MDD patients who received bifrontal ECT. MDD patients and HCs underwent rs-fMRI scans and clinical assessments (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Rey-Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), and the verbal fluency test). Regional homogeneity (ReHo) and functional connectivity wer

Neural Interactions Underlying Visuomotor Associations in the Human Brain.

Rapid and flexible learning during behavioral choices is critical to our daily endeavors and constitutes a hallmark of dynamic reasoning. An important paradigm to examine flexible behavior involves learning new arbitrary associations mapping visual inputs to motor outputs. We conjectured that visuomotor rules are instantiated by translating visual signals into actions through dynamic interactions between visual, frontal and motor cortex. We evaluated the neural representation of such visuomotor rules by performing intracranial field potential recordings in epilepsy subjects during a rule-learn

Reading difficulty is associated with failure to lateralize temporooccipital function.

OBJECTIVE: Studies of focal epilepsy have revealed abnormalities of language organization; however, little attention has been paid to disorders of reading in this group. We hypothesized that language functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) would reveal differences in language organization between focal epilepsy patients with and without reading difficulties. METHODS: We conducted language fMRI studies of 10 focal epilepsy patients with reading difficulties, 34 focal epilepsy patients without reading difficulties, and 42 healthy controls. RESULTS: We defined regions of interests on the b

Task positive and default mode networks during a parametric working memory task in obstructive sleep apnea patients and healthy controls.

INTRODUCTION: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies enable the investigation of neural correlates underlying behavioral performance. We investigate the working memory (WM) function of patients with untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) from the view point of task positive and default mode networks (TPN and DMN, respectively) and compare the results to those of healthy controls (HC). METHODS: A parametric fMRI experiment with 4 levels of visuospatial N-back task was used to investigate the pattern of cortical activation in 17 men with untreated moderate or severe OSA and 7 age

Neural correlates of coherent and biological motion perception in autism.

Recent evidence suggests those with autism may be generally impaired in visual motion perception. To examine this, we investigated both coherent and biological motion processing in adolescents with autism employing both psychophysical and fMRI methods. Those with autism performed as well as matched controls during coherent motion perception but had significantly higher thresholds for biological motion perception. The autism group showed reduced posterior Superior Temporal Sulcus (pSTS), parietal and frontal activity during a biological motion task while showing similar levels of activity in MT

Normalized perfusion MRI to identify common areas of dysfunction: patients with basal ganglia neglect.

Perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) is used to identify brain regions that are receiving enough blood supply to remain structurally intact, but not enough to function normally. Previous observations suggest that spatial neglect due to subcortical stroke can be explained by dysfunction of cortical areas rather than through the neuronal loss in the subcortical structures itself. The present study aimed to identify the dysfunctional cortical regions induced by basal ganglia stroke in patients with spatial neglect. In a patient group with stroke lesions centring on the basal ganglia, we examined the

Spatial imagery in deductive reasoning: a functional MRI study.

Various cognitive theories aim to explain human deductive reasoning: (1) mental logic theories claim syntactic language-based proofs of derivation, (2) the mental model theory proposes cognitive processes of constructing and manipulating spatially organized mental models, and (3) imagery theories postulate that such abilities are based on visual mental images. To explore the neural substrates of human deductive reasoning, we examined BOLD (blood oxygen level dependent) contrasts of twelve healthy participants during relational and conditional reasoning with whole-brain functional magnetic reso

Organic psychosis: Insight into the biology of psychosis.

Psychotic symptoms--delusions, delusional misidentifications and hallucinations--are observed in a variety of organic or nonorganic conditions, and are, therefore, diagnostically nonspecific. Common patholophysiologic denominators of different organic diseases may offer insights into the origin of psychotic symptoms. This article reviews some of the clinical and neuroimaging findings in organic psychoses present in various organic disorders. It attempts to extract a number of hypotheses about underlying biologic factors contributing to the development of psychotic symptoms of organic origin.

Intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging to update interactive navigation in neurosurgery: method and preliminary experience.

We report on the first successful intraoperative update of interactive image guidance based on an intraoperatively acquired magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) date set. To date, intraoperative imaging methods such as ultrasound, computerized tomography (CT), or MRI have not been successfully used to update interactive navigation. We developed a method of imaging patients intraoperatively with the surgical field exposed in an MRI scanner (Magnetom Open; Siemens Corp., Erlangen, Germany). In 12 patients, intraoperatively acquired 3D data sets were used for successful recalibration of neuronavigati

Individual differences in object permanence performance at 8 months: locomotor experience and brain electrical activity.

This work was designed to investigate individual differences in hands-and-knees crawling and frontal brain electrical activity with respect to object permanence performance in 76 eight-month-old infants. Four groups of infants (one prelocomotor and 3 with varying lengths of hands-and-knees crawling experience) were tested on an object permanence scale in a research design similar to that used by Kermoian and Campos (1988). In addition, baseline EEG was recorded and used as an indicator of brain development, as in the Bell and Fox (1992) longitudinal study. Individual differences in frontal and

Surgical resection as salvage therapy for super-refractory status epilepticus: a report of two cases.

OBJECTIVE: Super-refractory status epilepticus (SRSE) carries high mortality and morbidity when pharmacological treatments fail. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of emergency surgical resection for terminating SRSE secondary to focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) and ganglioglioma (GG). METHODS: We present two cases of SRSE caused by frontal lobe FCD and GG that were unresponsive to maximal medical therapy. Both patients underwent emergency resection of the epileptogenic zone after comprehensive presurgical evaluation. RESULTS: In both cases, surgical intervention successfully terminated SRSE. C…

Othello syndrome as an early manifestation of Alzheimer's disease: an anatomoclinical case study.

Othello syndrome (OS) is characterized by pathological jealousy toward one's spouse, usually marked by delusions of infidelity. We report the first case of OS in Brazil, similar to the case described by Alzheimer in 1906, in a 54-year-old right-handed patient diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The diagnostic workup included a clinical history and a positive family history of dementia, the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scale, the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory, and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Electroencephalography revealed slow waves predominantly in the bilateral temporo-

The neural networks of touch observation.

Studies have consistently demonstrated that the mere observation of touch engages our own somatosensory cortices. However, a systematic evaluation of the involved networks is missing. Here, we present results of a meta-analytic connectivity modeling (MACM) approach based on clusters revealed by activation likelihood estimation (ALE) combined with resting-state analysis to detect networks subserving our ability to empathize with tactile experiences of other people. ALE analysis revealed 8 clusters in frontal, temporal, and parietal brain areas, which behavioral domain profiles predominantly ref

Neural mapping of prepulse-induced startle reflex modulation as indices of sensory information processing in healthy and clinical populations: A systematic review.

Startle reflex is modulated when a weaker sensory stimulus ("prepulse") precedes a startling stimulus ("pulse"). Prepulse Inhibition (PPI) is the attenuation of the startle reflex (prepulse precedes pulse by 30-500 ms), whereas Prepulse Facilitation (PPF) is the enhancement of the startle reflex (prepulse precedes pulse by 500-6000 ms). Here, we critically appraise human studies using functional neuroimaging to establish brain regions associated with PPI and PPF. Of 10 studies, nine studies revealed thalamic, striatal and frontal lobe activation during PPI in healthy groups, and activation def…

Looking into recent and remote past: Meta-analytic evidence for cortical re-organization of episodic autobiographical memories.

Episodic autobiographical memory (EAM) is pivotal for the development and maintenance of personal identity. However, a theoretical debate still exists about where EAMs are stored in our brain and about hippocampal unique contribution to their recollection. Here we disentangled this issue performing an Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) meta-analysis on 79 neuroimaging experiments, classified according to the remoteness of EAMs, and meta-analytic connectivity modeling. A wide brain network, spanning from occipital to frontal lobe, was involved in recalling EAMs. However, remote and recent E…

Directed Interaction Between Monkey Premotor and Posterior Parietal Cortex During Motor-Goal Retrieval from Working Memory.

Goal-directed behavior requires cognitive control of action, putatively by means of frontal-lobe impact on posterior brain areas. We investigated frontoparietal directed interaction (DI) in monkeys during memory-guided rule-based reaches, to test if DI supports motor-goal selection or working memory (WM) processes. We computed DI between the parietal reach region (PRR) and dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) with a Granger-causality measure of intracortical local field potentials (LFP). LFP mostly in the beta (12-32 Hz) and low-frequency (f≤10Hz) ranges contributed to DI. During movement withholding,
