Comparison of cardiovascular risk factors for high brachial pulse pressure in blacks versus whites (Charleston Heart Study, Evans County Study, NHANES I and II Studies).

We examined whether the risk factors for increased brachial pulse pressure (PP) are similar for blacks and whites. Many studies have reported the strong association of increased brachial PP and the prevalence of cardiovascular disease. Participants were from 4 major epidemiologic studies in the United States (26,083 subjects): Charleston Heart Study, Evans County Heart Study, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) I study, and the NHANES II study. At baseline, there was no history or clinical evidence of coronary heart disease (CHD). The CHD mortality as a function of br…

[Usefulness of T2-weighted images using single shot fast spin echo (SSFSE) pulse sequence for the evaluation of pancreatobiliary diseases: comparison with MRCP using SSFSE].

Single shot fast spin echo (SSFSE) pulse sequence provides us with a thick single-slice MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) as well as thin multi-slice MRCP, and T2-weighted images are also obtained with SSFSE sequences. In comparison with conventional spin-echo and fast spin-echo sequences, T2-weighted image using SSFSE sequence has the advantages of the abscence of motion artifacts and the extremely short acquisition times. MRCP using SSFSE sequence is useful in the conspicuity of bile duct, pancreatic duct, and cystic lesions. However, T2 weighted image using SSFSE is superior to MRCP not on…

Molecular organization and dynamics in bacteriorhodopsin-rich reconstituted membranes: discrimination of lipid environments by the oxygen transport parameter using a pulse ESR spin-labeling technique.

Molecular organization and dynamics in protein-rich membranes have been studied by investigating transport (diffusion-concentration product) … lattice relaxation times (T1's) measured at various oxygen partial pressures by analyzing the short-pulse saturation recovery ESR signals. CD spectra and decay of polarized flash-induced photodichroism of bacteriorhodopsin indicated that BR molecules are monomers in reconstituted membranes with a lipid/BR molar ratio of 80 (80-rec) and are 25% monomers …

Late-onset Acute Cellular Rejection after Lung Transplantation Triggered by a Fluctuation in the Tacrolimus Trough Level Which Was Successfully Treated with Steroid Pulse Therapy.

Acute cellular rejection (ACR) usually develops within the first year of lung transplantation. We report a case of biopsy-proven ACR occurring 18 months post-transplant that was successfully treated with steroid pulse therapy and intensified immunosuppression. Onset followed azithromycin and clofazimine for Mycobacterium abscessus, which caused the tacrolimus trough levels to drop. The patient presented with dyspnea, diffuse ground-glass opacities, and reduced lung function. Although C4d staining was positive, the absence of donor-specific antibodies and histological findings supported the dia…

Effect of Local Anesthesia with and without Adrenaline on Blood Glucose Concentration, Blood Pressure, and Pulse Rate in Patients Undergoing Tooth Extractions: A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Local anesthesia is a fundamental component of dental procedures, particularly tooth extractions. The addition of adrenaline to local anesthetic solutions enhances anesthetic efficacy and prolongs its action, but may induce systemic changes, especially in blood pressure, pulse rate, and blood glucose levels. Understanding these physiological effects is critical to ensuring patient safety, particularly in individuals with cardiovascular or metabolic concerns. AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of local anesthesia with and without adrenaline on blood glucose conce…

Low-power optimal control pulse sequences enhance the sensitivity of 5 mm triple resonance cryogenic probe optimized for proton-detection at 1.2 GHz NMR instruments.

Improving the sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy requires advancements in both instrument technology and experimental methodology. In this study, we introduce a 5 mm triple resonance cryogenic probe optimized for proton-detection designed for 1.2 GHz instruments, leveraging optimal control pulse sequences to enhance performance. Our results show a 56% increase in average sensitivity for a benzene sample and up to a 50% improvement for a lossy concentration limited biological sample, reducing experimental time by more than a factor of two compared with the 3 mm cryogen…

Direct Observation of Dynamic Cerebrospinal Fluid Flow Velocity in the Lumbar Spinal Canal During Deep Respiration Using a Modified Time-Spatial Labeling Inversion Pulse Technique.

BACKGROUND: A previous single-case study has demonstrated that a modified time-spatial labeling inversion pulse (Time-SLIP) technique, specifically Deep Abdominal Breathing-induced CSF Flow Imaging with Time-SLIP (DAB Time-SLIP), successfully visualized dynamic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow during deep breathing with superior contrast compared to conventional Time-SLIP. However, it is unclear whether this occurs consistently across healthy individuals. PURPOSE: To investigate CSF flow dynamics during deep breathing in healthy volunteers with the DAB Time-SLIP. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPU…

Very short-term blood pressure variability by pulse transit time-based measurements during night-time predicts future cardiovascular events in patients with ischemic heart disease.

Blood pressure (BP) variability (BPV) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events, independent of absolute BP values. However, the predictive significance of very short-term BPV, occurring within seconds or minutes, in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) has yet to be established. This prospective study involved 206 consecutive hospitalized patients with IHD (mean age 67.6 years, 78.2% male) who underwent pulse transit time (PTT)-based continuous BP recording during the night-time. Very short-term BPV was assessed by standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (C…
