Despite advances in imaging and antibiotic treatment, brain abscess is still encountered occasionally. Various aerobic and anaerobic bacteria have been reported as causative agents of brain abscess but only a few cases of enterococcal brain abscesses have been reported. Here we report a case of brain abscess in a 12-year-old female patient, who presented with a history of fever, chills, headache, convulsions since seven days and history of altered sensorium and aphasia since the last two days. The patient had chronic suppurative otitis media of both ears following trauma and presented with ear

We present a case of extradural hemorrhage, a rare and unusual complication associated with Sickle Cell Disease, from Nizwa, Oman. A 12-year old male child with Sickle cell disease (SD) was admitted to hospital with backache and pain in both lower Limbs. Clinical examination revealed an average built child with mild pallor, mild tenderness in the lower back and both legs. Rest of the examination was unremarkable including the Central Nervous System. The next day, the patient developed generalized convulsion and became unconscious with shallow breathing. CT of the brain revealed large extradura

Trimethylaminuria is a metabolic disorder characterized by the excessive excretion of trimethylamine in bodily secretions, which confers a very unpleasant odour resembling that of dead fish. Literature reports only two cases affected by trimethylaminuria and epilepsy. We describe a third patient who, from the age of seven, was affected by temporal focal seizures with nocturnal episodes of nausea, vomiting, anxiety and autonomic activation followed by headache. EEG showed focal paroxysmal abnormalities prevailing on the right temporo-parieto-occipital regions. We began administering levetiracet

Chicken pox is the most frequent exantematic illness; usually its course is self-limited and benign. Several bacterial complications are described due to the disruption of the skin as a defensive barrier because of the characteristics of the injuries and the associated inmunodepression. Psoas abscess is a rare illness and it's difficult to diagnose, with a general unspecified clinical presentation. We present the case of a 5-year-old girl, on her fifth day of chicken pox, who consults about a febrile convulsion, from which she recovers without any neurological symptoms, referring to functional

Statewide hospital discharge data were used to assess the economic burden of neurocysticercosis in Los Angeles County (LAC) from 1991 through 2008. A neurocysticercosis hospitalization was defined as having a discharge diagnosis of cysticercosis in addition to convulsions, seizures, hydrocephalus, cerebral edema or cerebral cysts. This study identified 3,937 neurocysticercosis hospitalizations, with the number of annual hospitalizations remaining relatively unchanged over the study period (R(2) = 0.01), averaging 219 per year (range 180-264). The total of all neurocysticercosis hospitalization

This article outlines the history of ergot of rye up to 1900. Ergot is a fungal disease that affects many grasses but is particularly damaging to rye. It occurs as the result of an infection by the parasitic organism Claviceps purpurea, which produces characteristic black spurs on the grass. When incorporated into grain, the ergot fungus can cause severe outbreaks of poisoning in humans called ergotism. There are two main clinical forms of toxicity, gangrenous and convulsive, where coma and death often supervene: the death rate for ergotism has been reported to be between 10 and 20 per cent in

The congenital retinocephalic facial vascular malformation syndrome is characterized by unilateral, nonhereditary retinal and cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and is occasionally associated with orbital vascular changes. Typical signs are facial and oral mucosal vascular changes, rarely with changes of the maxilla or mandible. An AVM causes high blood flow because of direct connection (shunting) of major vessels without interposition of capillaries. Ocular complications include retinal and vitreous hemorrhages, edema, venous occlusion (risk of rubeosis iridis and secondary glaucoma)

Pathological fractures after minor trauma in osteopenic patients are not uncommon, but fractures due to hypocalcemic convulsions in patients with renal insufficiency are relatively rare. Though similar cases have been reported in the literature, this type of fracture is still an unusual condition. The complex underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and the poor bone mineral density signify the employment of specific hardware and a different treatment approach, especially in young adults, where the salvage of the femoral head is of utmost importance. The aim of this review is to examine the sp

Two males, 15 and 17 years old respectively, presented at the Emergency Department complaining of cramping abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting after ingestion of energy capsules. Physical examination revealed sinus tachycardia and slight abdominal pain. Laboratory examination showed substantial hypokalaemia and mild hyperglycaemia. Questioning revealed that they had taken 5 and 3 'herbal energy capsules' respectively and that these capsules supposedly contained 200 mg of caffeine each. Toxicological analysis showed a greatly increased serum caffeine concentration in both patients. The peak con

Preeclampsia occurs in 3-14% of pregnancies and is defined by maternal hypertension with proteinurea, generally associated with edema, coagulation abnormalities, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. The conditions can lead to eclampsia, characterized by hyperreflexia and convulsions. Several organs are afflicted by the condition, most importantly the liver and kidneys. The direct cause of preeclampsia is unknown, but the initial events are linked to abnormalities of placentation. This implies abnormalities in trophoblast invasion and in physiological alterations of placental vessels req

Child epilepsy continues to concern the researchers and the clinicians and carried out these last years of important progress as well in the genetic field, as in physiopathology, clinic and therapeutic one. The identification of new genes of epilepsy, epilepsies related to channelopathy and new phenotypes related to precise genetic mutations, constitutes a major progress of paediatric epilepsy. The debate around the role of febrile convulsions in the development of hippocampal sclerosis is started again thanks to Diffusion MRI techniques. In utero exposure to antiepileptic drugs (AED), and its

The author presents a case of brain death caused by salmonella encephalopathy in a 1-year-old girl. The patient suffered from fever, convulsive status, and coma. On the 5th day, her respiration was arrested. At that time, we confirmed the absence of brainstem reflexes. An electroencephalogram (EEG) showed a flat pattern. Only wave I was recordable in auditory brainstem responses (ABR). On the 6th day, we obtained a flat EEG and a disappearance of all components of ABR. A simultaneous elevation of her heart rate and blood pressure was observed 14 to 18 hours after the respiratory arrest. This p

Infants of depressed mothers are at increased risk for developing cognitive and behavioural problems. Medication is often prescribed for pregnant women suffering from a major depression. Approximately 2% of Dutch pregnant women is using a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). SSRIs cross the placenta easily. The consequences of prenatal exposure to SSRIs for the developing child remain to be determined. In the postnatal period, increased incidence of respiratory distress, feeding and digestive disturbances, irritability and convulsions, and admission to a neonatal intensive care unit

The paper presents the data of examination and treatment of children with pubertas precox (PP) resulting from hypothalamic hamartoma, a rare malformation of the brain. It analyzes the results of 27 cases that is one of the largest series of cases in the world literature. Of the greatest interest are the clinical and anatomic comparisons presented by the authors, which make it possible to define the involvement of different hypothalamic structures in the development of specific endocrine disorders. When located parahy-pothalamically, hamartomas (a peduncular type) are characterized by the sympt

We report a very rare case of Japanese encephalitis (JE) presenting with reversible stereotyped movement in the subacute stage. A 58-year-old woman presented with high fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and consciousness disturbance. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and T2-weighted image (WI) showed high intensity areas in the bilateral thalamus, caudate nucleus and hippocampus. She developed coma, convulsion, and ballism in the acute stage. One month after onset, she showed rhythmic, stereotyped, repetitive movements with hypoperfusion in

We report a case of primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) arising 8 years after chemotherapy and radiotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. A 15-year-old boy with a history of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, at the age of 7, underwent chemotherapy and 14Gy of radiotherapy to the whole brain. He was admitted to our department due to the development of aphasia, right hemiparesis and generalized convulsive seizure. MRI showed an irregularly enhanced mass in the left frontal lobe. A gross total removal of the tumor was performed and histological examination showed it to be PNET. Postoperatively

We report a 66-year-old man with hepatic encephalopathy due to a non-cirrhotic porto-systemic shunt during the course of treatment for epilepsy with sodium valproate. The patient developed symptomatic epilepsy after an operation for intracranial arterio-venous malformation at the age of 41, and had been treated with sodium valproate and phenytoin since. At the age of 66, he developed convulsions that were thought to be symptomatic epilepsy with hyperammonemia. Despite sodium valproate having been tapered rapidly and then discontinued, hyperammonemia continued. Abdominal contrast enhanced CT de

Brazil has many species of spiders belonging to Araneidae family however, very little is known about the composition, chemical structure and mechanisms of action of the main venom components of these spiders. The main objective of this work was to isolate and to perform the chemical characterization of a novel beta-carboline toxin from the venom of the spider Parawixia bistriata, a typical species of the Brazilian 'cerrado'. The toxin was purified by RP-HPLC and structurally elucidated by using a combination of different spectroscopic techniques (UV, ESI-MS/MS and 1H NMR), which permitted the
