A case of anterior cleavage syndrome in a 27-year-old female patient is described. It is remarkable for the unusual completeness and prominence of the symptoms. In addition to medodermal anomalies of the anterior segment (e.g., prominent ring of Schwalbe, posterior embryotoxon, peripheral anterior synechiae, hypoplasia of the iris stroma) the case also manifested microcornea, cataract, glaucoma, excessive myopia, partial anodontia vera with maxillary hypoplasia and telecanthus. It is the first time that Rieger's syndrome has been described in association with endocrine orbitopathy, caused by h

The correlation between downgrowth of subgingival plaque and loss of attachment was evaluated on 27 teeth which had to be extracted because of advanced bone loss in 16 patients between ages 12 and 22. The diagnostic criteria were those used for periodontosis. The teeth were stained and examined under the stereomicroscope. There was a very high degree of congruence between the subgingival plaque front and the line of lost attachment on all the teeth, thus showing that plaque is strongly involved in the destruction of the attachment apparatus. On some of the vestibular and lingual surfaces where

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Periodontitis is a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease caused by enhanced inflammation induced by dysbiotic microbes forming on subgingival tooth sites, which may disturb the balance of the microbial composition in the biofilm and finally result in the progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone with periodontal pocket formation and/or gingival recession.
METHODS: To elucidate the correlation between subgingival microbiome and IgAN incidence in CP (chronic periodontitis at severe levels) patients, subgingival plaque samples were collected from CP

Oral disorders were observed in children with congenital hypothyroidism, lately apparent because of difficulties of feeding, swallowing disorders, and macroglossia. Macroglossia was also a component of the severe acquired myxedema, particularly observed in hypothyroidism related to autoimmune atrophic thyroiditis beyond menopause. Lingual ectopy in children and adults could determine respiratory gene or swallowing difficulties, and were detectable by visual examination and the endobuccal touch. Expression of these events was completely minimized since the neonatal screening of congenital hypot

BACKGROUND: Osteodysplasia of the oral and maxillofacial bone is generally accompanied by systemic bone abnormalities (such as short stature, joint contracture) or other systemic abnormalities (such as renal, dermatological, cardiovascular, optic, or hearing disorders). However, it does not always present this way. Recent reports have suggested that genome-wide sequencing is an effective method for identifying rare or new disorders. Here, we performed whole-exome sequencing (WES) in a patient with a unique form of acquired, local osteodysplasia of the oral and maxillofacial region.

OBJECTIVE: Computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the head and neck routinely encompasses dentoalveolar structures within the field of view, yet dental findings are rarely reported. Opportunistic detection of dental pathologies could provide valuable information for patient management. This feasability study evaluated the diagnostic potential of CTA for identifying common dental pathologies compared with panoramic radiography (orthopantomogram, OPG).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-seven patients (39% female, mean age: 63 years), who underwent both OPG and head-and-neck CTA within 100 days wer

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear, a prevalent multifactorial condition, causes oral issues and indirect systemic risks. However, validated animal models for its clinical pathogenic factors are lacking, hindering pathogenesis study and clinical translation. To fill this gap, this study aims to develop and validate an animal model replicating graded molar wear matching clinical features. By regulating mechanical friction duration and chemical erosion intensity, we’ll create a tool for preclinical multifactorial tooth wear research. METHODS: We simulated multifactorial dental tooth wear on the molars of Sp

Morphological variation comprises differences among individuals of the same species, but when such variation is rare or unusual, it is considered an anomaly. We examined 280 adult specimens (208 Cebus spp. and 72 Sapajus apella), finding cranio-dental anomalies in 24.5% of Cebus spp. and 19.4% of Sapajus apella, with higher frequencies in males. The specimens represent 10 species (C. albifrons, C. capucinus, C. cesarae, C. cuscinus, C. imitator, C. leucocephalus, C. malitiosus, C. versicolor, C. yuracus, and S. apella) across eight countries in Central and South America. The most frequent anom

Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome type X1 (CMTX1) is an inherited motor and sensory neuropathy caused by mutations in the GJB1 gene located in the X chromosome. Although uncommon, stroke-like episodes have been reported in patients with CMTX1, typically triggered by stress and characterized by distinctive magnetic resonance imaging findings with complete spontaneous resolution. We report the case of a 13-year-old boy with CMTX1 and no prior neurological symptoms who developed right hemiparesis, dysarthria, and facial deviation following a wasp sting. After activation of the stroke code, brain magne

PURPOSE: KBG syndrome (KBGS) is a rare neurodevelopmental syndrome caused by haploinsufficiency of ANKRD11. The childhood phenotype is extensively reported but limited for adults. Thus, we aimed to delineate the clinical features of KBGS.
METHODS: We collected physician-reported data of adults with molecularly confirmed KBGS through an international collaboration. Moreover, we undertook a systematic literature review to determine the scope of previously reported data.
RESULTS: The international collaboration identified 36 adults from 31 unrelated families with KBGS. Symptoms included mild/bo

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Axonal Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2 (CMT2) accounts for 24% of Hereditary Motor/Sensory Peripheral Neuropathies. CMT2 type GG, due to four distinct heterozygous mutations in the Golgi brefeldin A resistant guanine nucleotide exchange factor 1 (GBF1) gene (OMIM 606483), was described in seven cases from four unrelated families with autosomal dominant inheritance. It is characterized by slowly progressive distal muscle weakness and atrophy, primarily affecting the lower limbs. Here, we present two siblings sharing a novel GBF1 variant.
METHODS: Patient II.1 (male, 6
