Neonatal withdrawal syndrome after chronic maternal consumption of 4-methylethcathinone.

Synthetic cathinones have been markedly present in the Spanish drug market in recent years. These substances can be easily obtained in "smart shops", smoke shops, gas stations and web sites where they can be bought and received anonymously avoiding normal law controls. For the first time we present a case of a neonatal withdrawal syndrome in a baby born to a woman who was a chronic consumer of 4-methylethcathinone. The newborn presented with increased jitteriness and irritability, highpitched cry, hypertonia in the limbs and brisk tendon reflexes. 4-Methylethcathinone was identified and quanti

Morphine intake and the effects of naltrexone and buprenorphine on the acquisition of methamphetamine intake.

Some common genetic factors appear to influence risk for drug dependence across multiple drugs of abuse. In previous research, mice that were selectively bred for higher amounts of methamphetamine consumption, using a two-bottle choice methamphetamine drinking procedure, were found to be less sensitive to the locomotor stimulant effects of morphine and of the more selective μ-opioid receptor agonist fentanyl, compared to mice that were bred for low methamphetamine consumption. This suggested that μ-opioid receptor-mediated pathways may influence genetic risk for methamphetamine consumption. We

Effect of methamphetamine dependence on everyday functional ability.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (METH) is an increasingly popular and highly addictive psychostimulant with a significant impact on public health. Chronic METH exposure has been associated with neurotoxic effects, profound neuropsychological deficits, and impaired quality of life, but few studies have examined the effect of the drug on the ability to carry out everyday activities. We assessed the effect of METH dependence on everyday functioning using the UCSD Performance-Based Skills Assessment (UPSA-2), a performance-based measure designed to evaluate real-life skills. METHOD: UPSA-2 performanc

Trace evidence of trans-phenylpropene as a marker of smoked methamphetamine.

This case study investigates trans-phenylpropene as a potential marker for smoked methamphetamine. The decedent, a 31-year-old male, was found with paraphernalia that indicated that he may have been smoking abused drugs prior to death. Methamphetamine and cocaine were detected in the residue remaining in the paraphernalia. Markers of thermal degradation of methamphetamine and cocaine were also detected in the paraphernalia. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis detected trans-phenylpropene as a marker of smoked methamphetamine and anhydroecgonine methyl ester as a marker of smo

[Psychoactive substances in biological samples--toxicological laboratory data].

The subject of the research was the analysis of frequency and type of psychoactive substances used, basing on the determinations the blood and/or urine samples, performed in the toxicological laboratory of the Department of Clinical and Industrial Toxicology Jagiellonian University in Kraków in the period from December 2001 to November 2003. From 17,649 performed determinations--45.5% were positive. 50% of the positive determinations were psychoactive substances. The most often psychoactive substance determined was ethyl alcohol (52.86%), next benzodiazepines (17.41%), amphetamines (10.54%), o

Amphetamine-induced myoglobinuric acute renal failure.

A 36-year-old man was admitted because of sopor and dark urine after intravenous amphetamine injection. He subsequently developed myoglobinuria and acute renal failure. Serum myoglobin value was remarkably elevated to 83,000 ng/ml, and urine myoglobin was 400,000 ng/ml. Renal biopsy revealed tubular degeneration and tubular obstruction with myoglobin casts by immunofluorescence examination. Amphetamine-induced rhabdomyolysis was suspected to cause myoglobinuric acute renal failure.

Use, indications and distribution in different countries of the stimulant and hallucinogenic amphetamine derivatives under consideration by WHO.

Information is presented on legal manufacture, distribution, medical uses and in various countries of the stimulants and hallucinogens under consideration by the World Health Organization (WHO). Data are reported from the Substance Abuse Warning System (SAWS) in the F.R.G. and other surveillance systems regarding illicit manufacture, trafficking and abuse of these compounds internationally. In addition, it is pointed out that assessment of the liability of these compounds for abuse must consider not only the substance itself but also its potential metabolic products. These data, collectively,

Intravenous amphetamine abuse, primary cerebral mucormycosis, and acquired immunodeficiency.

Two intravenous amphetamine abusers had fatal, rapidly progressive cerebral mucormycosis with abscess formation in the presence of absolute lymphopenia. Postmortem examination confirmed the primary nature of the fungal cerebritis, documented by postmortem culture and histology. The clinical and pathologic features of these cases are compared to previously reported occurrences of primary fungal cerebritis (and abscess) among intravenous drug abusers, including cocaine users. Primary fungal cerebritis associated with intravenous abuse of stimulant drugs is discussed as a possible variant of the

A Swedish drug abuse warning network.

During the period June 1971-December 1976 a total of 592 consecutive admissions to a Drug Addiction Clinic were asked which drugs they had been taking since their first contact with the illegal drug market. Nine drugs belonging to the opiate group, five different amphetamines, five hallucinogens, cocaine and cannabis were mentioned and the patients were asked to specify which year or years they had self-administered any of the drugs mentioned. No attempts were made to quantify the individual drug consumption. The amphetamines and cannabis dominated in the mid sixties, but from then on recorded

Distinct insula subdivisions of resting-state functional connectivity in individuals with opioid and methamphetamine use disorders.

Different addictive drugs can impact the function and morphology of the brain in diverse ways. The insula cortex, an important brain node involved in craving and reward neural circuits in individuals with substance use disorders (including damage to the insula cortex), has been reported to reduce addictive behaviors. However, less is known about whether there is a functional difference between individuals with opioid and methamphetamine use disorders, especially regarding the function of the insula cortex. Fifty-eight individuals with opioid use disorder and sixty individuals with methamphetam

Stimulant and Designer Drug Use: Primary Care Management.

Approximately 10% of the U.S. population 12 years and older reported using illicit substances in 2015. This article reviews the clinical effects and treatment of persons who use cocaine, methamphetamines, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), synthetic cannabinoids, and synthetic cathinones ("bath salts"). Cocaine blocks the reuptake of the monoamine transporters dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Immediate clinical effects include increased energy and euphoria, as well as hypertension and arrhythmias. Acute myocardial infarction, seizures, hallucinations, hyperthermia, and movement

GABA system in the prefrontal cortex involved in psychostimulant addiction.

Drug addiction is a chronic and relapse brain disorder. Psychostimulants such as cocaine and amphetamine are highly addictive drugs. Abuse drugs target various brain areas in the nervous system. Recent studies have shown that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a key role in regulating addictive behaviors. The PFC is made up of excitatory glutamatergic cells and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAergic) interneurons. Recently, studies showed that GABA level was related with psychostimulant addiction. In this review, we will introduce the role and mechanism of GABA and γ-aminobutyric acid receptors (GA

Acceleration of HIV dementia with methamphetamine and cocaine.

We report a patient with rapidly accelerating HIV dementia accompanied by seizures and an unusual movement disorder despite highly potent antiretroviral therapy. This clinical constellation was associated with the non-parenteral use of methamphetamine and cocaine. Fractional enhancement time on post contrast magnetic resonance imaging studies revealed a progressive breakdown of the blood brain barrier particularly in the basal ganglia. The movement disorder but not the dementia responded to a combination of dopamine replacement and anticholinergic therapy. While the movement disorder may have

Amphetamines in washed hair of demonstrated users and workplace subjects.

In a study of volunteer subjects from drug rehabilitation programs, methamphetamine and amphetamine levels were determined in the hair of 40 subjects who had produced MS-confirmed methamphetamine-positive urine results. The samples were tested by radioimmunoassay and analyzed by LC/MS/MS after being washed with the 3.75-h wash procedure developed by this laboratory. In addition, results of non-user and workplace samples are presented. In workplace samples, levels of methamphetamine, amphetamine, methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA), and methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), are reported. The range
