Effect of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis of group B streptococcus infection on the incidence and bacteriological profile of early-onset neonatal sepsis.

OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) of group B streptococcus (GBS) infection on the incidence and bacteriological profile of early-onset neonatal sepsis (EONS). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical data of 494 pregnant women with positive GBS screening results and 526 neonates born by these women. According to whether the pregnant woman received IAP, the neonates were divided into two groups: IAP (n=304) and control (n=222). The two groups were compared in terms of clinical indices, incidence rate of EONS, and distribution of p

Blood-borne virus transmission in an urban, culturally diverse neighbourhood: results from a cross-sectional bio-behavioural survey using innovative outreach methods in a hard-to-reach population.

UNLABELLED: Background Following a HIV outbreak among Aboriginal people in a culturally diverse inner-city suburb of Melbourne, a blood-borne virus (BBV) screening program was conducted to inform public health interventions to prevent transmission and facilitate timely diagnosis and linkage to care. METHODS: In August-September 2014, community health workers recruited people who inject drugs (PWID) from a local needle and syringe program. Participants were tested for hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), HIV and syphilis and completed a bio-behavioural questionnaire. RESULTS: In

Noble goals, unforeseen consequences: control of tropical diseases in colonial Central Africa and the iatrogenic transmission of blood-borne viruses.

BACKGROUND: In southern Cameroon, 40-50% of individuals born before 1945 have antibodies against hepatitis C virus (HCV), suggesting massive iatrogenic transmission of at least one blood-borne virus in the region of the world where SIV(cpz) emerged into HIV-1. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the potential role of disease control programs that used intravenous (IV) drugs in the transmission of blood-borne viruses, especially HCV. Methods We reviewed, for 1921-1959, records of health services in Cameroun, Oubangui-Chari, Gabon and Moyen-Congo. We calculated the incidence of diseases whose treatment requ

Protozoan Parasite Babesia microti Subverts Adaptive Immunity and Enhances Lyme Disease Severity.

Lyme disease is the most prominent tick-borne disease in the United States. Co-infections with the tick-transmitted pathogens Babesia microti and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto are becoming a serious health problem. B. burgdorferi is an extracellular spirochete that causes Lyme disease while B. microti is a protozoan that infects erythrocytes and causes babesiosis. Testing of donated blood for Babesia species is not currently mandatory due to unavailability of an FDA approved test. Transmission of this protozoan by blood transfusion often results in high morbidity and mortality in recipien

Field vaccination against CCHFV and Hyalomma tick infestation reduces multiple tick-borne infections in sheep.

Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) are expanding globally, with their impact on public health expected to rise due to climate change. Immunizing livestock offers a cost-effective alternative or adjunct to human vaccination. We evaluated two DNA vaccines, one targeting Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and another targeting Hyalomma tick infestation. The Hyalomma-targeting vaccine was designed to disrupt tick feeding by targeting midgut proteins essential for blood digestion and survival; however, its direct role in preventing CCHFV transmission remains unconfirmed. Here, we demonstrate th

Investigation of erythema migrans patients identifies Borrelia species and Neoehrlichia mikurensis with implications for clinical assessment.

Emerging tick-borne infections pose public health challenges and may complicate treatment decisions. The EMBio study, a multicenter observational study, aims to describe erythema migrans (EM), an early localized manifestation of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) infection, and investigate the occurrence of tick-borne co-infections among patients presenting with this skin lesion. Additionally, the study seeks to determine relations between EM morphology, other clinical manifestations, specific pathogens, and disease prognosis. Clinical characteristics, skin biopsies, and blood samples were

The Vector Competence of Asian Longhorned Ticks in Langat Virus Transmission.

Haemaphysalis longicornis (the longhorned tick), the predominant tick species in China, serves as a vector for a variety of pathogens, and is capable of transmitting the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), the causative agent of tick-borne encephalitis. However, it is unclear how these ticks transmit TBEV. Langat virus (LGTV), which has a reduced pathogenicity in humans, has been used as a surrogate for TBEV. In this study, we aimed to investigate the vector competence of H. longicornis to transmit LGTV and demonstrate the efficient acquisition and transmission of LGTV between this tick spec

Vector host-feeding preferences drive transmission of multi-host pathogens: West Nile virus as a model system.

Seasonal epizootics of vector-borne pathogens infecting multiple species are ecologically complex and difficult to forecast. Pathogen transmission potential within the host community is determined by the relative abilities of host species to maintain and transmit the pathogen and by ecological factors influencing contact rates between hosts and vectors. Increasing evidence of strong feeding preferences by a number of vectors suggests that the host community experienced by the pathogen may be very different from the local host community. We developed an empirically informed transmission model f

Cross-alteration of murine skin and tick microbiome concomitant with pathogen transmission after Ixodes ricinus bite.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are major vectors of diseases affecting humans such as Lyme disease or domestic animals such as anaplasmosis. Cross-alteration of the vertebrate host skin microbiome and the tick microbiome may be essential during the process of tick feeding and for the mechanism of pathogen transmission. However, it has been poorly investigated. METHODS: We used mice bitten by field-collected ticks (nymphs and adult ticks) in different experimental conditions to investigate, by 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding, the impact of blood feeding on both the mouse skin microbiome and the tick microbiome

Molecular survey and phylogenetic analysis of Borrelia theileri, Rickettsia aeschlimannii, Mycoplasma ovis, and Mycoplasma wenyonii in sheep and goats from southern Egypt.

Sheep and goats constitute a critical component of the Egyptian agricultural economy, serving as primary sources of milk, meat, and wool for rural populations. This study was conducted to detect and characterize infections caused by Borrelia theileri, Rickettsia aeschlimannii, Mycoplasma ovis, and Mycoplasma wenyonii in small ruminants from southern Egypt using molecular methods. The identification of these pathogens underscores potential threats to livestock productivity and raises public health concerns, particularly due to the zoonotic nature of Rickettsia aeschlimannii. The detection of th

Visualisation of Bluetongue Virus in the Salivary Apparatus of Culicoides Biting Midges Highlights the Accessory Glands as a Primary Arboviral Infection Site.

BACKGROUND: Arthropods transmit a wide range of pathogens of importance for the global health of humans, animals, and plants. One group of these arthropod vectors, Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), is the biological vector of several human and animal pathogens, including economically important livestock viruses like bluetongue virus (BTV). Like other arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses), Culicoides-borne viruses must reach and replicate in the salivary apparatus, from where they can be transmitted to susceptible hosts through the saliva during subsequent blood feeding. Amotosalen-inactivated plasma is as equally well tolerated as quarantine plasma in patients undergoing large volume therapeutic plasma exchange.

A retrospective - single center - survey compared tolerance of individual donor therapeutic plasma in a series of 88 patients principally presenting with thrombotic microangiopathy; all patients underwent therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) performed with more than 90% of either of two types of plasma preparations. One plasma type used in TPE was prepared with pathogen reduction by amotosalen addition and UVA illumination, and the other one was non-manipulated (quarantine plasma). Both types of plasma were single donor. Occurrences of adverse reactions were equally low in either arm (amotosalen:

Hosts of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes and G. pallidipes in areas of western Kenya with endemic sleeping sickness, as determined using an egg-yolk (IgY) ELISA.

Bloodmeal sources of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes and G. pallidipes, from the western Kenyan foci of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) on Mageta Island and in Busia district, were identified using an ELISA based on chicken egg-yolk (IgY) antibodies. After absorption with cross-reacting antigens, the antibodies, which were produced against representatives of eight families of vertebrate host, were capable of differentiating serum from the different families. With the ELISA, it was possible to identify the family of host for 100% of laboratory-fed flies tested up to 48 h post-bloodmeal but only
