Effect of blood-group on relation between HLA match and outcome of cadaver kidney transplants.

In a series of 4998 cadaver kidney transplants the extent of HLA matching correlated with transplant outcome in patients with blood-groups other than O (non-O) but not in patients of blood-group O. The high survival-rate of poorly matched kidneys in O recipients was responsible for the lack of correlation between HLA matching and graft survival in these patients. Survival-rates of transplants with 4 HLA mismatches were 52 +/- 3% at one year in 222 O-to-O grafts compared with 24 +/- 5% in 65 B-to-B grafts (P less than 0.0001). In 2827 non-O patients, there was a strong correlation between HLA m…

Cadavers stored under refrigerated conditions as a source of cold-adapted microscopic fungi.

Fungi are frequently observed on human remains during decomposition; however, little is known about fungal communities associated with cadavers stored under refrigerated conditions. This study aimed to characterize the cultivable fungal diversity of human cadavers subjected to long-term cold storage and to identify taxa capable of persisting under these conditions. A total of 12 cadavers were examined, including refrigerated cadavers stored at 4 °C, frozen cadavers, and one non-refrigerated comparison case recovered from an indoor environment. Fungi were isolated using culture-based methods an…

Bilateral Fusion of the Semitendinosus and Long Head of the Biceps Femoris Muscles in a Male Cadaver.

Bilateral variation of the semitendinosus (ST) and the long head of the biceps femoris (BFlh) muscles is an anatomically rare occurrence. In this case report, we describe a male cadaver exhibiting bilateral fusion of the ST and BFlh muscles at their proximal origin on the ischial tuberosity, with the muscles separating distally into their respective muscle bellies. As far as we are aware, this bilateral fusion has not been previously documented in the literature; the only known report of fusion between the ST and BFlh muscles describes a unilateral fusion in a female cadaver, which was associa…

Clinically Silent Multi-Territory Aneurysms in Cadavers: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Aneurysms are permanent, focal dilations of vessels that are ≥150% of normal diameter. While single aneurysms are relatively common, the presence of multiple aneurysms in different vascular territories is uncommon, and consolidated discussions of such cases remain limited. We report the case of a 96-year-old male cadaver with extensive but clinically silent aortic aneurysms identified during routine anatomical dissection. A large abdominal tumor was also noted compressing the right renal artery. Additionally, we review published reports of multi-territory aneurysms, which highlight the heterog…

Supreme nasal conchae in human cadavers: prevalence, morphometry, and a new classification proposal.

BACKGROUND: Extranumerary nasal conchae, including the supreme nasal concha (SupNC) and Zuckerkandl's concha (ZC), are uncommon variants relevant to endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery, yet their prevalence and morphometry remain poorly defined. No cadaveric study has simultaneously evaluated prevalence, detailed morphometry, and a data-driven SupNC classification using principal component analysis (PCA). This study determined SupNC prevalence in cadavers and proposed a clinically oriented classification integrating morphological and quantitative parameters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-…

Rare anatomical variation: analysis of an aberrant right subclavian artery in three cadavers.

An aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) is a congenital vascular anomaly in which the right subclavian artery originates directly from the aortic arch distal to the left subclavian artery. Although often asymptomatic, ARSA can lead to clinical complications, such as dysphagia, upper respiratory issues, and vascular events. In this study, we examined the gross anatomical and histological characteristics of the ARSA based on three cadavers selected from a total of 7 ARSA cases identified among 3,158 specimens dissected between 1948 and 2024 at Nihon University School of Medicine (overall inci…

An Incidental Finding of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Its Histology in a Dissected Human Cadaver.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a vascular condition often associated with atherosclerotic degeneration and typically remains asymptomatic until rupture. It predominantly affects older males and carries a significant mortality risk if undiagnosed or untreated. This report describes a rare case of an infrarenal AAA observed during the routine dissection of a male cadaver aged 65-75 years at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh. The aneurysm exhibited fusiform dilatation with a maximum transverse diameter of 46.79 mm, accompanied by atherosclerotic changes, mural thrombu…

Ultrasound Localization of Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta in a Human Cadaver Model.

OBJECTIVE: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is a method of gaining proximal control of noncompressible torso hemorrhage (NCTH). Catheter placement is traditionally confirmed with fluoroscopy, but few studies have evaluated whether ultrasound (US) can be used. METHODS: Using a pressurized human cadaver model, a certified REBOA placer was shown one of four randomized cards that instructed them to place the REBOA either correctly or incorrectly in Zone 1 (the distal thoracic aorta extending from the celiac artery to the left subclavian artery) or Zone 3 (in the d…

Scaphometacarpal arthroplasty with a TOUCH® prosthesis: feasibility and biomechanical impact in a cadaver model.

In this cadaveric study, we compared the performance of the TOUCH® dual mobility trapeziometacarpal prosthesis implanted sequentially in the trapeziometacarpal joint and scaphometacarpal joint. Intraprosthetic mobility, implant dislocation, intraprosthetic impingement and the effect on scaphoid position were evaluated in six hands using radiographic measurements. The standard necks of 6-10 mm were used for trapeziometacarpal arthroplasty. Scaphometacarpal arthroplasty after trapeziectomy was technically feasible but required specially designed prosthetic necks 12-26 mm in length. Compared to t…

The intervertebral discs' fibrocartilage as a DNA source for genetic identification in severely charred cadavers.

Identifying charred human remains poses a challenge to forensic laboratories. High temperature completely incinerates the superficial tissues and partially destroys bones, forcing the forensics to seek an alternative, for bones and teeth, forensic material that should quickly and cheaply deliver DNA of sufficient quantity and quality. We sought, other than rib cartilage, types of cartilages that could serve as a DNA source. DNA was isolated from the fibrous cartilage of a fibrous ring of intervertebral L1-L2 discs sampled from charred cadavers or charred body fragments: 5 victims of car fires,…

Fluoroscopic Evaluation of the Role of Syndesmotic Injury in Lateral Ankle Instability in a Cadaver Model.

BACKGROUND: There is a high prevalence of concomitant lateral ankle ligament injuries and syndesmotic ligamentous injuries. However, it is unclear whether syndesmotic ligaments directly contribute toward the stability of the lateral ankle. Therefore, the aim of this study was to fluoroscopically evaluate the role of the syndesmotic ligaments in stabilizing the lateral ankle. METHODS: Twenty-four cadaveric specimens were divided into 3 groups and fluoroscopically evaluated for lateral ankle stability with all syndesmotic and ankle ligaments intact and then following serial differential ligamen…
