Kiwifruits have become one of the most common food sources triggering allergic reactions. Patients who noticed worsening of their skin disease after using topical corticosteroid preparations were patch tested both with the commercial preparation and the corticosteroid itself. Between 1987 and 1989, 10 cases of contact dermatitis due to topical corticosteroids were detected in this way. A case of occupational contact allergy to furazolidone, used as an animal feed additive and as an antimicrobial drug in veterinary medicine, is described. The patient did not react to furazolidone 2% pet. Using PEG-400 and alcohol as patch test vehicles resulted in positive patch test reactions. No cross-reactions were observed to other nitrofuran derivatives (nitrofurazone, nitrofurantoin) or to furfural. The literature on contact allergy to nitrofurans is reviewed.

Negative test reactions were obtained when 410 eczema patients (129 with allergic contact dermatitis) were tested using occlusion technique with bifonazole in yellow vaseline in the concentrations of 1, 4, 16 and 32%. The latter concentration is 32 times greater than the concentration used therapeutically. Thus bifonazole is not a primary irritant, when applied to the skin under occlusion, nor were any cross reactions observed with allergens previously known.

The purpose of the present study was to determine possible cross-reactivity between different serogroups or between different species by means of bacterial smears of individual L. pneumophila serogroups and several non-pneumophila Legionella spp. Using BIOCHIP slide we found a considerable frequency of cross-reactions with L. pneumophila serogroup 12 (88.4%) therefore BIOCHIP slide proved as useful method for identification of cross-reactivity between members of the Legionnellaceae.

Eight allergic patch test reactions, eight irritant skin reactions induced by 3% sodium lauryl sulphate and six normal controls were biopsied. Biopsies were immunohistochemically stained with a mouse monoclonal antibody to inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and staining was quantified by computerised image analysis. A guinea-pig model for anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions to suxamethonium was evaluated. 'Sensitization' to that drug was demonstrated both by cardiac anaphylaxis in the Langendorff preparation, and by serum antibody studies. Spontaneous sensitization to cross-reacting chemicals in a proportion of control animals is strongly suggested, somewhat akin to spontaneous sensitization in patients with anaphylactoid reactions to neuromuscular blockers on first exposure, and in whom IgE antibodies are detected.

A study of specific immune response in guinea-pigs after immunization with human papilloma viruses (HPV) purified from plantar warts, hand warts and condyloma acuminata is reported. The respective viruses induced the production of high antibody titres as well as specific cellular immunity as demonstrated by intradermal tests in all the animals. To develop reactive and antifouling membrane filtration systems, a photo-Fenton ceramic membrane was prepared by coating goethite (α-FeOOH) catalysts on a zirconia/titania alumina membrane via a cross-linking method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize α-FeOOH catalysts and the surface coating quality. The cross linker yielded stable covalent binding between catalyst and membrane under room temperature and produced a homogeneous and smooth coating of catalyst on ceramic membranes.

BACKGROUND: Isocyanates are used in polyurethane production. Dermal exposure to isocyanates can induce contact allergy. The most common isocyanate is diphenylmethane diisocyanate used for industrial purposes. The isomer diphenylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate (4,4'-MDI) is used in patch testing. Diphenylmethane-4,4'-diamine (4,4'-MDA) is its corresponding amine.
