PURPOSE: To compare the frequency of dermatological manifestations between patients with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma and those with primary open-angle glaucoma.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was done on all consecutive pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients evaluated in a tertiary eye hospital during the study period. Eligible patients were referred to the dermatology department for complete skin, hair, nail, and mucosal examinations.
RESULTS: Twenty-one patients in the PEXG group and 26 patients in the POAG group were included in this study. The

OBJECTIVES: Mucocutaneous diseases are common in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). To identify cutaneous diseases for which HIV-infected people are at high risk, we sought those that are strongly associated with specific HIV-related oral lesions and with progression of HIV disease.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study of HIV-positive outpatients referred to a university stomatology clinic for diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases. Each subject underwent both complete oral and cutaneous examinations.
RESULTS: Among 55 men, with a median age of 41 years and a median CD4

Allergists/immunologists see patients with a variety of skin disorders. Some, such as atopic and allergic contact dermatitis, are caused by abnormal immunologic reactions, whereas others, such as seborrheic dermatitis or rosacea, lack an immunologic basis. This review summarizes a select group of dermatologic problems commonly encountered by an allergist/immunologist.

BACKGROUND: Scalp conditions are often multifactorial.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize patients with scalp involvement and patch-testing outcomes.
METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional analysis of North American Contact Dermatitis Group data (1996-2016). Study groups included patients with scalp involvement (≤3 anatomic sites coded) with or without additional sites.
RESULTS: A total of 4.8% of patients (2331/48,753) had scalp identified as 1 of up to 3 affected anatomic sites. Approximately one-third of "scalp-only" individuals had a specific primary diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis (38

Pigmented transverse nasal band (PTNB) is an interesting morphological entity mainly of cosmetic concern. It is believed to be related to a defect in the development of the nasal cartilages and bones from childhood to adolescence. Some patients may have genetic predisposition. It is asymptomatic in nature and may be associated with certain dermatological conditions such as seborrheic diathesis, dermatosis papulosa nigra, ichthyosis, atopic dermatitis, acne vulgaris, psoriasis, and seborrheic melanosis.

Cutaneous fungal infections are a major source of morbidity in HIV-infected patients, and their management poses special challenges. Superficial mycoses, such as tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, and onychomycosis, are no more common in HIV-infected patients than in the HIV-negative population but are of greater severity. Although they respond to topical and systemic antifungal agents, HIV-positive patients are predisposed to frequent recurrences. Unusual types of fungal infections such as Majocchi's granuloma are more likely to develop in HIV-infected patients and respond best to sys

We observed a patient in whom large numbers of seborrheic keratoses developed in the course of a generalized dermatitis that progressed into an exfoliative erythroderma. A renal mass was finally discovered and was surgically excised. On microscopic examination, the kidney tumor proved to be a benign fibrous-walled, multilocular cyst. After removal of the renal cyst, the erythroderma and exfoliation subsided. A few months later, the seborrheic keratoses were noted to have become smaller, flatter, and fewer in number. Microscopic examination of five such involuting lesions showed, in each instan

Dermatosis neglecta is a condition secondary to lack of cleanliness, characterized by the formation of hyperkeratotic plaques located in a particular region of the body, usually due to a disability, and it is considered a diagnostic challenge because it can mimic other entities. We present the case of an 18-year-old woman with a 2-month history of progressive brown verrucous plaque in her face. Our first impression was seborrheic dermatitis and she was treated with facial cleanser soap and topic hydrocortisone 1%. One month later, she arrived with new lesions. Because of this our diagnosis cha

The following communication concerns two schizophrenic patients with Tardive dyskinesia (TD) in whom fluctuations in the severity of the dyskinesias were accompanied by changes in the severity of the seborrheic skin lesions. Since seborrheic dermatitis may be associated with increased plasma melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) level, these observations suggest an association between the severity of TD and increased pituitary MSH release. In addition, TD may be associated with hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction of MSH autoregulation.

Spongiotic dermatitis represents a commonly encountered histopathological pattern seen by dermatopathologists. The differential diagnosis of lymphocyte predominant acute spongiotic dermatitis typically entails atopic dermatitis (AD), contact dermatitis, nummular dermatitis, pityriasis rosea and seborrheic dermatitis. Recently, our group has characterized a distinct subtype of spongiotic dermatitis occurring exclusively in heavily pigmented patients. Clinically, lesions of this subtype are nearly indistinguishable from lichen planus. However, the histology is contradistinctive to classic lichen

A topical clinical trial with preparations containing urea and sodium pyruvate has been made. It was used for diverse hyperkeratotic skin conditions (psoriasis, xerosis, pityriasis rubra pilaris, stuccokeratosis, seborrheic dermatitis, stasis dermatitis, pityriasis lichenoides chronica). A month later a clinical improvement was evident in all cases except in pityriasis lichenoides.

The human scalp harbors a vast community of microbial mutualists, the composition of which is difficult to elucidate as many of the microorganisms are not culturable using current culture techniques. Dandruff, a common scalp disorder, is known as a causative factor of a mild seborrheic dermatitis as well as pityriasis versicolor, seborrheic dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. Lipophilic yeast Malassezia is widely accepted to play a role in dandruff, but relatively few comprehensive studies have been reported. In order to investigate fungal biota and genetic resources of dandruff, we amplified t

In the following a short overview on inflammatory dermatoses which are frequently diagnosed in clinical dermatology is presented. These include allergic contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic dermatitis, nummular dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, lichen planus and psoriasis. Special emphasis is laid on the evolutionary stages in the development of lesions, clinically as well as histologically. The abovementioned dermatoses have a special pathological reaction pattern in common: the epidermis, papillary dermis and superficial capillary-venular plexus react together in these conditi…

Reports of local and systemic complications from topically applied corticosteroids used in the treatment of inflammatory dermatoses warrant a re-examination of other methods of therapy. The specific measures suggested in this paper for treating seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis may also be applied to eczematous eruptions that are in similar stages of development.

Case 1: A 33-year-old man with a 14-year history of localized skin disease on the face and scalp was evaluated at the department of dermatology. The physical examination revealed plaques with papules, pustules, and a golden yellow crusting on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, and chin (Figure 1). The scalp presented fine, whitish scales. At the beginning of his disease, the patient presented large red and painful purulent boils. The 14-year clinical course of these lesions was characterized by partial remissions and recurrences, but he did not specify any treatment related to improvement. The c

The authors review the data on the incidence and type of fungal involvement of the face in T. rubrum-induced trichophytosis in the USSR and other countries of the world. Exquisite localizations are cited, i.e. involvement of the lacrimal nasal channel, external acoustic meatus, eyelids and eyelashes. Extraordinary variants of trichophytosis of the face are described: tumor-like, wart-like, infiltrative suppurative, seborrheal, as well as the forms simulating photodermatoses, perioral dermatitis, etc. 35 case histories of patients suffering from this condition, observed by the authors over 21 y
