Using eye tracking to explore the relationship between autism traits, joint attention, cognition and adaptive functioning in preschool children.

There is significant heterogeneity in clinical presentations, brain-imaging findings, and genetic underpinnings of autism. Autism traits, particularly social affect and joint attention, and related domains of adaptive functioning and cognitive development, are key characteristics in determining autism "profiles". This study aimed to understand such baseline profiles in preschool autistic children receiving early intervention (age range, 2-7 years old; sample size N = 67). We also examined the association between phenotypic pre-intervention characteristics and response to intervention using Ear

Factors Associated With Depressive Symptoms Among Graduate Students in Science and Technology: A Cross-Sectional Study With Multivariable Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression among graduate students is a growing concern, according to the WHO. However, existing literature lacks multivariable analysis focused specifically on the graduate student populations. This study addresses this gap by investigating the factors contributing to depressive symptoms among science and technology graduate students. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted after ethics committee approval among 387 consenting graduate students selected using stratified random sampling from all 13 departments at the Institute of Science and Technology (IOST), Tribhuvan Univ

What I Wish I Had to Train Endoscopy: The Need for Transformation of Endoscopy Education.

Over the past half century, endoscopy education has evolved from a personal craft to a global discipline. This narrative reflection traces that journey-from the early, unstructured apprenticeship era to today's call for scientific, standardized teaching. Through five decades of experience, it highlights the challenges of tradition-bound methods, the pivotal role of technology, and the urgent need for transformation through structured curricula, deliberate practice, and faculty development. The future of endoscopy education depends not only on innovation but also on our collective commitment to

Deliberative Discussion Focus Groups.

This article discusses a new approach for the conduct of focus groups in health research. Identifying ways to educate and inform participants about the topic of interest prior to the focus group discussion can promote more quality data from informed opinions. Data on this deliberative discussion approach are provided from research within three federally funded studies. As healthcare continues to improve from scientific and technological advancements, educating the research participants prior to data collection about these complexities is essential to gather quality data.

Immersive medical training: a comprehensive longitudinal study of extended reality in emergency scenarios for large student groups.

Young healthcare professionals and medical graduates often fall short in the practical experience necessary for handling medical emergencies. This can not only lead to strained feelings of inadequacy and insecurity among future physicians and less experienced healthcare providers in general, but also to detrimental outcomes for patients as emergency medicine demands rapid decision-making with low tolerance for errors. New didactic modalities and approaches may be needed to effectively address this shortcoming. Immersive technologies are powerful novel educational tools with untapped potential

Microsurgery Training in Plastic Surgery.

Advances in surgical instruments, magnification technology, perforator dissection techniques, and vascular imaging over the past decades have facilitated exponential growth in the field of microsurgery. With wide application potential including but not limited to limb salvage, breast reconstruction, lymphedema treatment, and sex affirmation surgery, microsurgery represents a critical skill set that powerfully augments the reconstructive armamentarium of plastic surgeons. Accordingly, microsurgical training is now a critical component of the plastic surgery residency education curriculum. Train

Deducing a surgical dilemma using a novel three dimensional printing technique.

Persistent apical periodontitis even after nonsurgical retreatment demands for a surgical approach. This requires a thorough diagnosis and planning to eliminate the pathology and induce healing. This is sometimes challenging when the pathology is present in close relationship to the vital structures. In such cases, modern, sophisticated technology such as three-dimensional (3D) printing can come very handy in patient education as well as for planning and mock-up preparation of the surgery. In this case, a nonhealing persistent apical periodontitis in relation to 16 was surgically treated. Howe

Technologies to Combat Aedes Mosquitoes: A Model Based on Smart City.

Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes are responsible for the transmission of diseases such as dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya fever, zika virus fever, some of which can cause irreversible central nervous system problems and death. This study investigates what technologies are being used for combatting and monitoring the Aedes mosquitoes and to propose joining these technologies into a single and complete solution using the Smart Cities concept. A search for newscasts on Google and mobile apps in app stores were performed to identify technological solutions for combat to Aedes

Developing evidence-based guidelines for describing potential benefits and harms within patient information leaflets/sheets (PILs) that inform and do not cause harm (PrinciPILs).

BACKGROUND: Variation in the way information about potential trial intervention benefits and harms is conveyed within patient information leaflets can cause avoidable information-induced ('nocebo') harm, research waste, and may be unethical. OBJECTIVES: 1. To develop stakeholder-informed principles to guide how to describe information about potential trial intervention benefits and harms within patient information leaflets. 2. To test whether using these principles are feasible for testing in trials that measure whether they improve recruitment and adverse event rates. 3. To develop and disse

Complications of awake fibreoptic intubation without sedation in 200 healthy anaesthetists attending a training course.

BACKGROUND: Two hundred anaesthetists underwent airway endoscopy and attempted awake fibreoptic intubation (FOI) on a training course. Complications were recorded and each subject's response to the procedure was assessed. METHODS: Topical airway local anaesthesia was produced with up to 9 mg kg(-1) of lidocaine, sedation was not used. Complications during and after the procedure were noted. Later, the subjects completed an anonymous questionnaire about anxiety, pain, coughing, and side-effects of lidocaine. RESULTS: More than 1300 endoscopies were performed, 180 delegates were intubated, 175

Educational Resilience During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Descriptive Evaluation of Medical School and Licensing Examination Policies in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted medical education worldwide, highlighting critical vulnerabilities in educational continuity, especially in the context of high-stakes examinations. This study investigates how medical schools and national examination authorities in Japan responded to these challenges, focusing on the provision of make-up and alternative testing measures. METHODS: We analyzed the availability of make-up and alternative examination options in 82 Japanese medical schools and across 22 national licensing examinations for medical-related professions betw

Computational thinking and programming with Arduino in education: A systematic review for secondary education.

The development of programming skills and computational thinking in the formal educational context is one of the most recent horizons set by many educational systems worldwide. Although the first computational thinking initiatives are being applied from the earliest school ages, this research focuses on the secondary education level. Specifically, the objective is the following: to analyse the implementation of Arduino, as well as the benefits and opportunities it brings to secondary school students. For this purpose, documentary research has been undertaken applying a systematic review accord
