The serum enzymes of pigs naturally infected with the metacestodes of Taenia solium and of uninfected pigs were assayed. Aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, ornithine carbamyl transferase, sorbitol dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase and ceruloplasmin activities were significantly increased in the serum of the infected pigs.

Fasciola gigantica infection in sheep produced liver and lung lesions characterized by damage to blood vessels and parenchymal necrosis. In the lungs, the lesions were those of parasitic bronchopneumonia. The damage to the liver and lung tissues was accompanied by increased activity in serum of AST after 2 weeks, GD and SD after 4 to 5 weeks and GGT and 5'-NT from 8 weeks onwards. Bilirubin concentration was not affected.

The effect of hyaluronate on lysosomal enzyme activities in bovine ciliary body and iris was studied in vitro. Hyaluronates from both the human umbilical cord and bovine vitreous inhibited the activities of cathepsin B and acid phosphatase. Cathepsin D, beta-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase, beta-D-glucuronidase and alpha-L-fucosidase activities were not affected by the hyaluronate.

We examined the enhancing effect of antitumor activity by co-administration of 5-FU or its masked form (FT-207) with bases or nucleosides of purine and pyrimidine. It was found that the antitumor activity of 5-FU or FT-207 on sarcoma-180 and AH-130 tumor was oral administration of uracil, deoxyuridine, uridine, thymine or thymidine.
