BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis investigates the efficacy of pharmacological treatments for pathological gambling (PG).
METHODS: We searched for randomized, placebo-controlled trials examining pharmacotherapy of pathological gamblers. A fixed-effects model was used to calculate the standardized mean difference (SMD) of the benefit of medication (stratified by class) compared to placebo. Few studies have evaluated rates of gambling participation and problems in older adults. This study recruited 492 adults aged 65 years and older from bingo sites (n = 132) and senior centers (n = 360). Accumulating evidence suggests that treatment-seeking substance abusers have high rates of gambling problems.
