Impact of dynamic sub-populations within grafted chains on the protein binding and colloidal stability of PEGylated nanoparticles.

Polyethylene glycol grafting has played a central role in preparing the surfaces of nano-probes for biological interaction, to extend blood circulation times and to modulate protein recognition and cellular uptake. However, the role of PEG graft dynamics and conformation in determining surface recognition processes is poorly understood primarily due to the absence of a microscopic picture of the surface presentation of the polymer. Here a detailed NMR analysis reveals three types of dynamic ethylene glycol units on PEG-grafted SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) of the type commonly evaluated as long-cir

Removing of the Sulfur Compounds by Impregnated Polypropylene Fibers with Silver Nanoparticles-Cellulose Derivatives for Air Odor Correction.

The unpleasant odor that appears in the industrial and adjacent waste processing areas is a permanent concern for the protection of the environment and, especially, for the quality of life. Among the many variants for removing substance traces, which give an unpleasant smell to the air, membrane-based methods or techniques are viable options. Their advantages consist of installation simplicity and scaling possibility, selectivity; moreover, the flows of odorous substances are direct, automation is complete by accessible operating parameters (pH, temperature, ionic strength), and the operation

[Value of a synthetic osseous model obtained by stereo-lithography for preoperative planning. Correction of a complex femoral deformity caused by fibrous dysplasia].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The authors investigated the application of life-sized bone models obtained by stereolithography in orthopaedics. MATERIALS: The method was applied to planify correction of a severe femoral bone deformity secondary to fibrous dysplasia in a 27 years old man. This deformity was responsible for abnormal hip range of motion 70 degrees/-10 degrees (flexion-extension), -20 degrees/60 degrees (abduction-adduction), -30 degrees/60 degrees (external-internal rotation), and restricted walking ability because of lack of abduction and external rotation. A "shepherd-cross" deformity

Coverage- and Isotope-Dependent Langmuir-Rideal/Eley-Rideal and Hot-Atom Reaction Dynamics of H(D) with D(H)-Covered Pt(100): Quasiclassical Molecular Dynamics Simulations.

Hydrogen-isotope abstraction on platinum surfaces is a key elementary process in heterogeneous catalysis and hydrogen-related surface chemistry. In this work, coverage- and isotope-dependent reaction dynamics of H or D atoms impinging on D- or H-covered Pt(100) surfaces were investigated using quasiclassical molecular dynamics simulations with a flexible Pt slab at a fixed low incidence energy of 0.07 eV. The adsorbate coverage was varied from 0.18 to 0.80 monolayers (ML). Hydrogen isotope-Pt interactions were described using an adjusted London-Eyring-Polanyi-Sato potential, whereas the Pt sub

Hamiltonian Dynamics and Fundamental Phenomena in Biophysics: A Review.

We review a theoretical and experimental programme with the aim of understanding two intimately related fundamental phenomena in biophysics: (i) the classical analogue of Fröhlich phonon condensation in macromolecules driven out of thermal equilibrium and (ii) the consequent activation of long-range resonant electrodynamic intermolecular forces. Both phenomena are underpinned by explicit Hamiltonian models. The first is derived by applying the time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) to the quantum Wu-Austin model, producing a fully classical Hamiltonian in action-angle variables whose nonl

Streamlining analysis and design of two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy using machine learning.

Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) offers unique insights into the coupling between electronic and nuclear motion and dynamics, making it a key technique in diverse fields, including materials science and biology. Obtaining 2DES data requires a series of measurements that involve multiple pulses to construct the full picture-a time-consuming task that often necessitates working with limited or noisy data. Here, we introduce a machine-learning based framework that aims to maximize the data that can be extracted from 2DES experiments and provides guidance toward the selection of addi

3-dimensional neuroanatomy of the human fetal pelvis: anatomical support for partial urogenital mobilization in the treatment of urogenital sinus.

PURPOSE: Retrospective reviews suggest that the functional outcomes of surgery of the urogenital sinus have often been unsatisfactory and to our knowledge the long-term results of newer surgical techniques have yet to be evaluated. A precise understanding of pelvic fetal neuroanatomy is germane for optimizing surgical correction of the urogenital sinus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pelves of 10 human female fetuses were serially sectioned. Masson's trichrome staining and immunochemistry for the neuronal marker S100 (Dako Corp., Carpinteria, California) along with anatomical computer reconstruct

Three-dimensional display of cardiac structures using reconstructed magnetic resonance imaging.

It is sometimes difficult to understand the three-dimensional (3D) relationship of cardiac and mediastinal structures despite advances in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques. We present a low-cost system for 3D reconstruction of the major mediastinal structures by processing the MR imaging data on a NeXT workstation. MR images of multisection, multiphase, spin-echo techniques stored in a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) data base were used for the reconstruction. The computer program obtained the contours of the multiple components of the mediastinal structures by the c

[Sexually transmitted diseases and other risks in the adult film industry].

The adult film industry nowadays represents a legal multi-billion dollar business. The main health risks of adult performers are well known. They mainly include the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, herpes and papillomavirus. However, despite regular follow-up, the frequency of STD remains significant in this high-risk population since a large part of the industry continues to reject systematic use of condoms. Besides, performers are also exposed to other physical and mental health issues often not known to the public. This article pro

Describing Crouzon and Pfeiffer syndrome based on principal component analysis.

UNLABELLED: Crouzon and Pfeiffer syndrome are syndromic craniosynostosis caused by specific mutations in the FGFR genes. Patients share the characteristics of a tall, flattened forehead, exorbitism, hypertelorism, maxillary hypoplasia and mandibular prognathism. Geometric morphometrics allows the identification of the global shape changes within and between the normal and syndromic population. METHODS: Data from 27 Crouzon-Pfeiffer and 33 normal subjects were landmarked in order to compare both populations. With principal component analysis the variation within both groups was visualized and

HIV and STI risk behaviors, knowledge, and testing among female adult film performers as compared to other California women.

A cross-sectional structured online survey was self-administered to a convenience sample of current female adult film performers via the Internet; bivariate analyses compared HIV and other STI risk behaviors, knowledge, and testing in female adult performers to California Women's Health Survey respondents. 134 female adult film performers (mean age 27.8 years) were compared to the 1,773 female respondents (mean age 31.3 years) to the 2007 CWHS. Female performers initiated sex on average 3 years younger and had 6.8 more personal sexual partners in the prior year than other California women. The

Two-photon imaging of lymphocyte motility and antigen response in intact lymph node.

Lymphocyte motility is vital for trafficking within lymphoid organs and for initiating contact with antigen-presenting cells. Visualization of these processes has previously been limited to in vitro systems. We describe the use of two-photon laser microscopy to image the dynamic behavior of individual living lymphocytes deep within intact lymph nodes. In their native environment, T cells achieved peak velocities of more than 25 micrometers per minute, displaying a motility coefficient that is five to six times that of B cells. Antigenic challenge changed T cell trajectories from random walks t

Can the hamstring muscles protect the anterior cruciate ligament during a side-cutting maneuver?

Because anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common in European handball the present study assessed knee joint shear forces to estimate ACL loading in six elite female handball players during a side-cutting maneuver. A pilot investigation in three dimensions showed that peak moments occurred in the sagittal plane at a high velocity. Therefore, analysis of the movement was performed in two dimensions using high-speed cinematography, ground reaction forces, and electromyography (EMG). Film and force plate data allowed for calculation of net joint moments (inverse dynamics), estimates of

Frontal temporal and parietal systems synchronize within and across brains during live eye-to-eye contact.

Human eye-to-eye contact is a primary source of social cues and communication. In spite of the biological significance of this interpersonal interaction, the underlying neural processes are not well-understood. This knowledge gap, in part, reflects limitations of conventional neuroimaging methods, including solitary confinement in the bore of a scanner and minimal tolerance of head movement that constrain investigations of natural, two-person interactions. However, these limitations are substantially resolved by recent technical developments in functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), a

Ubiquitous Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities driving plasma mixing on the Sun.

The interaction between the magnetic field and turbulent convection in the Sun's photosphere drives the dynamics, evolution and structuring of its magnetized atmosphere. This interaction often takes place at or below the spatial resolution of modern-day observations. Here we report on high-spatial-resolution observations of the solar photosphere acquired using the world's first 4-m class solar telescope, the US National Science Foundation's Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope. Time sequence images reveal a far more complex and dynamic solar scene than previously observed. We identify ubiquitous m

Beyond Gonarthrosis in the Elderly: A Case Report of Subchondral Insufficiency Fracture of the Knee.

Subchondral insufficiency fracture of the knee (SIFK) is a non-traumatic condition that has been, historically, associated with the elderly. Early diagnosis and management are essential to prevent evolution to subchondral collapse and secondary osteonecrosis, developing prolonged pain and functional losses. This article presents the case of an 83-year-old patient with severe right knee pain with 15 months of evolution, with sudden onset, and no history of trauma or sprain. Upon observation, the patient presented with a limping gait, antalgic posture with the knee in semi-flexion, pain on palpa
