Mitochondrial DNA abnormalities in ophthalmological disease.

Mitochondrial disorders are a group of clinically heterogeneous diseases, commonly defined by lack of cellular energy due to genetic defects of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). Ocular involvement is a prominent clinical feature of mitochondrial disease. This can manifest as optic nerve dysfunction specifically involving retinal ganglion cells as typified by Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), or progressive external ophthalmoplegia (PEO) and ptosis involving the extraocular muscles which is commonly associated with either primary mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations or acquired mtDNA d

[An update on the use of tissue adhesives in ophthalmology].

Tissue adhesives have a long history of use in almost all surgical disciplines, both as an alternative and a complement to sutures. Nevertheless, ophthalmologists have restricted knowledge of their potential applications; consequently, tissue adhesives have been underutilized so far. This review discusses the most relevant clinical and experimental advances in the use of tissue adhesives in ophthalmology and details the characteristics and properties of the glues. Among the currently available adhesives, synthetic glues are mainly represented by cyanoacrylates and biologic glues by fibrin-base…

Neuro-ophthalmologic manifestations of paraneoplastic syndromes.

Paraneoplastic syndromes with neuro-ophthalmologic manifestations may involve the central nervous system, cranial nerves, neuromuscular junction, optic nerve, uvea, or retina. Most of these disorders are related to immunologic mechanisms presumably triggered by the neoplastic expression of neuronal proteins. Accurate recognition is essential to appropriate management.

Ophthalmologic findings of Boucher-Neuhäuser syndrome.

To report a case of Boucher-Neuhäuser syndrome, which is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the triad of spinocerebellar ataxia, chorioretinal dystrophy, and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. An 18-year-old man was seen for visual problems, which had been diagnosed as retinitis pigmentosa at the age of 12 years. His puberty was delayed. At 16 years of age, the patient experienced progressive deterioration of his balance and gait disturbance. Then he was referred to our clinic because Boucher-Neuhäuser syndrome was suspected. He had no specific family history; his visual acuity was 0

[Cataract in children--not only an ophthalmological problem].

Cataract is an opacity of the lens that leads to loss of vision and even blindness. It is responsible for 10.7-14% of the children who are blind. The etiology of cataract is unknown. Cataract in children can be congenital or acquired, unilateral or bilateral. Unilateral congenital cataract is an important cause of amblyopia and strabismus. Cataract can occur as an isolated disorder or as coexisting problem with other diseases. Differential diagnostics requires a number of tests regarding the patient and his relatives. The management should be complex including prophylaxis, diagnosis and treatm

[Ophthalmologic findings in multiple handicapped patients].

PURPOSE: To report the visual findings in patients with multiple handicaps. METHODS: Two hundred and seventy-four patients cared for at the Pediatric and Strabismus Ophthalmology Department of the "Fundação Altino Ventura" - Brazilian National Health System, were examined from June to September 2004. Age varied from 0.1 to 20 years with a median of 5. RESULTS: The majority of the patients (61.3%) presented good visual acuity; however low visual acuity (< 20/80) was observed in 38.7% of the patients. Heterotropias were observed in 66 patients (24.0%); astigmatism (53.2%) and hyperopia (29.0%)…

[Ophthalmologic symptomatology in children with periventricular leucomalation].

Ophthalmologic symptoms were analyzed in 76 children with periventricular leucomalation (PL). Clinical or functional ophthalmic disorders were detected in 100% of patients. Changes in the optic nerve disc were diagnosed in 93.4% of patients. The syndrome of dilated excavation (SDE), i.e. dilation and cupping of the optic nerve disc combined in all cases with affection of postgenicular visual paths (of optic radiation and/or striatal cortex) verified by neuroradiology, was most frequently (80.3%) encountered in children with PL. Presumably, the progression of SDE is associated with transsynapti

The neuro-ophthalmologic complications of cervical manipulation.

Cervical manipulation, specifically chiropractic manipulation, is an important cause of vertebrobasilar and occasionally carotid distribution strokes. Neuro-ophthalmologic findings are a common and at times relatively isolated feature of cervical manipulation-induced stroke. A case of chiropractic-induced occipital lobe infarction with homonymous hemianopsia is reported, and the literature regarding neuro-ophthalmologic findings is reviewed.

[Visual hallucinations in ophthalmological and neurological diseases].

Visual hallucination can be defined as visual sensory perception without external stimulation, or something that a patient sees that other observers in the same environment do not see. The images may be unformed (lights, streaks, flashes) or formed (objects, people, scenes). Clinical experience indicates that, despite the infrequency with which they are mentioned, visual hallucinations commonly occur in patients with ophthalmological and neurological diseases. Content, duration and timing of visual hallucinations relate to their cause and provide useful clinical information. This paper reviews

Neuro-ophthalmologic findings in the Asperger disorder.

Asperger disorder is a complex behavioral disorder that may be related to autism. We examined a 49-year-old man with Asperger disorder who had multiple neuro-ophthalmologic abnormalities, including colobomatous defects involving the optic discs and peripapillary retina, and abnormal ocular motility with an oculocephalic dyskinesia. Asperger disorder may be associated with a variety of neuro-ophthalmologic disturbances.

[Horton's disease: ophthalmological and neurological complication].

We report the case of a 74-year-old women admitted to the hospital because of rapidly developing diplopia. The admission anamnesis revealed fronto-temporal headaches and pain in the maxilla for three days. A cerebral cT scan was normal, and a corticosteroid therapy was initiated. Diagnosis of Horton's syndrome was confirmed by the good response to treatment and by biopsy of the temporal artery. Different ocular and neurologic complications of Horton's disease, their clinical appearances and therapeutic measures are discussed by the authors.

[Neuro-ophthalmological problems in the diabetic patient].

Neuro-ophthalmological complications in diabetic patients are relatively rare, and their prevalence seems to be much less important than the retinopathy and the cataract prevalence. Although the low frequency of the neuro-ophthalmological complications, these might induce severe loss of vision or oculomotor disturbance, as it is reported in acute anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy or in cranial neuropathy. The etiopathogenic mechanism is still uncertain, but actually a metabolic dysfunction seems to be the more plausible hypothesis. In absence of specific treatment, we emphasized the importan

Ophthalmologic observations in the young Yucatan micropig.

Complete ocular examinations, including external observations of the eye and its adnexae, pupil responses to light stimuli (direct and consensual), anterior ocular segment examinations with the biomicroscope, and fundic examinations performed with an indirect ophthalmoscope were carried out on 112 7- to 12-month-old Yucatan micropigs to evaluate the incidence of observed ocular abnormalities. Most of the ocular defects seen were classified as remnants of embryologic vascular tissue. Some findings were considered as congenital changes and the others of indeterminate origin in the absence of fur
