Retinal nerve fiber layer imaging with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography: effect of multiple B-scan averaging on RNFL measurement.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of multiple B-scan averaging on retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measurement taken with a spectral-domain optical coherence tomographer (OCT). METHODS: Twenty-five normal individuals and 29 patients with glaucoma were examined. One eye was selected randomly of each participant for circumpapillary RNFL scanning by the Spectralis OCT (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, GmbH, Dossenheim, Germany). Three sets of OCT image series comprising 2, 8, and 16 consecutive B-scans were obtained in the same visit. After multiple B-scan averaging, the respective g

[Evaluation of stereometric parameters of optic disc and nerve fiber layer using HRT III. Report 1: reproducibility and intraobserver variability coefficients].

29 patients with initial primary open angle glaucoma were examined using Heidelberg retinal tomograph III (HRT III). In one visit 2 observers took 2 measurements. Intra- and interobserver errors (reproducibility and intraobserver variability coefficient) were calculated for 13 stereometric parameters of optic disc and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). Rim area, cup depth (mean, maximum) and linear cup/disc ratios showed to be minimally variable. Cup area and volume, disc/cup area ratio were found to have greater variability. When performed by different observers (each entering his own contour)

Correct calculation circle location of optical coherence tomography in measuring retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in eyes with myopic tilted discs.

PURPOSE. Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT) can be unreliable in the presence of a myopic tilted disc. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the calculation circle location of spectral domain (SD)-OCT when measuring RNFL thickness in healthy subjects with myopic tilted disc. METHODS. Sixty-nine eyes with myopic tilted disc and no other ocular abnormalities were analyzed. In all eyes, RNFL thickness was measured twice: first, along a calculation circle determined by a built-in algorithm (referred to as circle 1) and

Diffusion tensor fiber tractography of the optic radiation: analysis with 6-, 12-, 40-, and 81-directional motion-probing gradients, a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Knowing the exact location of the optic radiation preoperatively is important for surgery of the temporal lobe. We hypothesized that a greater number of motion-probing gradients (MPGs) would provide better results of diffusion tensor (DT) fiber tractography of the optic radiation. To test this hypothesis, this study evaluated differences in DT fiber tractography of the optic radiation under different MPG settings. METHODS: DT images were obtained in 12 healthy volunteers (7 men, 5 women) with a mean age of 32 years (range, 22-45 years) by using a 3T MR imaging scanner

Baseline retinal nerve fiber layer thickness as a predictive biomarker for endoscopic optic canal decompression in NAION: towards a precision medicine approach.

BACKGROUND: Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) remains a major cause of blindness with no consensus on treatment. The heterogeneity of patient outcomes suggests that a "one-size-fits-all" approach is ineffective. This study aimed to identify structural biomarkers to define the therapeutic window for endoscopic transnasal optic canal decompression (ETOCD) and explore its mechanism via vascular reperfusion imaging. METHODS: Seventy-one patients diagnosed with NAION were included and categorized into two groups: an ETOCD group (n = 30) and a medical management group (n = 41)

Heterojunction-Enhanced Interfacial Evanescent-Tunable Fiber Optic Probe for Amplification-free CRISPR/Cas12a-Based Rapid and Ultrasensitive Detection of MPXV.

Conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based detection methods suffer from time-consuming procedures, reliance on specialized equipment, and difficulty in achieving early viral diagnosis. In this study, interferometric fiber-optic sensing is integrated with the CRISPR/Cas12a system for the first time. With sensitivity further enhanced by immobilizing ZnO@Au on the fiber surface, the platform enables rapid, amplification-free detection of monkeypox virus (MPXV) at the single-molecule level. Whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) excited in the fiber probe provide high sensitivity to ambient refr

Incidental detection of retinal nerve fiber layer thinning with slowed progression following optic nerve-carotid artery decompression: A case report.

PURPOSE: This report aims to present a case of the retinal nerve fiber layer (NFL) thinning, in which the progression of thinning was slowed following optic nerve-carotid artery decompression surgery. OBSERVATIONS: A 41-year-old ophthalmologist incidentally noticed a generalized thinning of NFL in his left eye using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Five years earlier, the OCT showed only mild thinning. While visual acuity and visual fields were normal, the patient reported a blurriness. The MRI revealed an ectatic and tortuous left internal carotid artery compressing the left optic nerve.

Dual-mode electrochemical fiber optic surface plasmon resonance sensor (EC-FO-SPR) for real-time and sensitive detection of lipopolysaccharide.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a key component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, is the primary trigger of septic shock. The rapid and selective detection of LPS is essential for effective disease prevention and treatment. The conventional prism-based electrochemical surface plasmon resonance (EC-SPR) system is limited by their bulky optical configurations, making it difficult to integrate into portable devices. In this study, we present a compact and implantable electrochemical fiber optic surface plasmon resonance (EC-FO-SPR) sensor to detect LPS. The gold-coated optical fiber serv

A YOLOX-Based Automatic Monitoring Approach of Broken Wires in Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe Using Fiber-Optic Distributed Acoustic Sensors.

Wire breakage is a major factor in the failure of prestressed concrete cylinder pipes (PCCP). In the presented work, an automatic monitoring approach of broken wires in PCCP using fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensors (DAS) is investigated. The study designs a 1:1 prototype wire break monitoring experiment using a DN4000 mm PCCP buried underground in a simulated test environment. The test combines the collected wire break signals with the previously collected noise signals in the operating pipe and transforms them into a spectrogram as the wire break signal dataset. A deep learning-based ta

Diverse spectral band-based deep residual network for tongue squamous cell carcinoma classification using fiber optic Raman spectroscopy.

The research is to propose a new classification framework, called diverse spectral band-based deep residual network (DSB-ResNet), which can distinguish tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) from non-cancerous tissue. A fiber optic Raman spectroscopy system is used to collect Raman spectral data of TSCC and normal tissues. DSB-ResNet takes advantage of diverse spectral band-based spectra without processing to derive spectral representations from different spectral bands of Raman spectra, which improves the ability to identify TSCC. To show the superiority of the proposed method, the existing me
