Anti-GQ1b-Negative Miller Fisher Syndrome with Acute Areflexic Mydriasis and Cholinergic Supersensitivity.

INTRODUCTION: Several infectious diseases can present nail manifestations, which may be useful for diagnosis and prognosis, and only a few reports have been made regarding monkeypox (mpox). The objective of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of nail alterations in patients living with HIV coinfected with mpox. METHODS: A prospective, cross-sectional study included patients living with HIV/AIDS, coinfected with mpox. We examined all 20 nails in search of nail plate alterations. Patients were divided into two groups, with and without nail disease, and the CD4 count was note

[The efficacy of cetuximab for metastatic colorectal cancer].

Cetuximab (Erbitux) is a targeted therapy that used to treat metastatic colorectal cancer. It is classified as a "monoclonal antibody" and "signal transduction inhibitor" by binding to epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR). We report 6 patients who responded well to cetuximab out of 8 patients with recurrent/advanced colorectal cancer who have received the drug at our hospital since November 2008. Four patients were men and 2 were women, with their ages ranging from 48 to 77 years. The primary cancers were located in the rectum (n=1), sigmoid colon (n=4), and ascending colon (n=1). Performa

Mitogen-activated protein/extracellular signal-regulated kinase kinase inhibition results in biphasic alteration of epidermal homeostasis with keratinocytic apoptosis and pigmentation disorders.

PURPOSE: Raf/mitogen-activated protein/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) kinase (MEK)/ERK signaling pathway is constitutively activated in melanoma. AZD6244 blocks MEK1/2, inhibiting ERK phosphorylation. We focus on associated cutaneous toxicity and we attempt to understand the underlying pathophysiology and design treatment strategies. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Dermatologic conditions of 22 patients with unresectable melanoma stage III/IV in a phase II trial were evaluated. Thirteen patients received AZD6244 initially, and nine patients were treated with AZD6244 following tumor progress

A real-world pharmacovigilance study of dacomitinib based on FDA adverse event reporting system (FAERS) database.

Dacomitinib, a second-generation, irreversible epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor that was approved for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer in 2018, has limited real-world safety data. This study investigates dacomitinib-associated adverse events (AEs) using the United States Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. We conducted a retrospective analysis of the FAERS database, extracting dacomitinib-related reports from 2018 Q3 to 2024 Q3. To assess the association between dacomitinib and AEs, we employed multiple disproportio

Effective Management of Severe Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibitors-Induced Papulopustular Eruption With Low-Dose Isotretinoin and Corticosteroids.

Epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRi) are approved for treating various cancers. Given that EGFR signaling is crucial for normal skin growth and repair, inhibiting this pathway can disrupt skin homeostasis and integrity. Although generally well tolerated, molecularly targeted therapies can lead to skin-related adverse effects that significantly impact patients' quality of life, often resulting in treatment interruptions. The most common cutaneous reaction associated with EGFRi is a diffuse, papulopustular acneiform eruption. Management strategies can be tailored based on the seve

Amivantamab in EGFR Exon 20 Insertion-Mutated Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Progressing on Platinum Chemotherapy: Initial Results From the CHRYSALIS Phase I Study.

PURPOSE: Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) exon 20 insertion (Exon20ins) mutations exhibits inherent resistance to approved tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Amivantamab, an EGFR-MET bispecific antibody with immune cell-directing activity, binds to each receptor's extracellular domain, bypassing resistance at the tyrosine kinase inhibitor binding site. METHODS: CHRYSALIS is a phase I, open-label, dose-escalation, and dose-expansion study, which included a population with EGFR Exon20ins NSCLC. The primary end points were dose-limiting toxicity and overal

Effectiveness and Safety of EGFR-TKI Rechallenge Treatment in Elderly Patients with Advanced Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Harboring Drug-Sensitive EGFR Mutations.

Background and Objectives: Epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) are effective first-line chemotherapeutic agents for patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring drug-sensitive EGFR mutations. However, the effectiveness of EGFR-TKI rechallenge after first-line EGFR-TKI treatment is not sufficient in elderly patients (over 75 years of age) harboring drug-sensitive EGFR mutations. Therefore, we investigated the effectiveness and safety of EGFR-TKI rechallenge after first-line EGFR-TKI treatment in elderly patients with advanced NSCLC harb

Autologous "foreign body" as a sequel of improper cutting of an ingrowing toe nail?

We report on a 63-year-old male who suffered from an ingrown toenail affecting the left first digit for several years. Medical history revealed that repeated vigorous nail plate trimming by the patient relieve the red, painful swelling of his great toe. Furthermore, Emmert onychoplasty as well as non-invasive procedures did not achieve improvement. A thorough surgical exploration of the affected area detected a nail spicule in the deeper paronychium. This was likely caused by improper cutting of the nail plate. Removal of the fragment in combination with partial nail plate excision, followed b

Diagnosis and management of upper limb soft tissue infections.

Soft tissue infections are common in the upper limb, particularly in the hand, which is exposed to the environment. They include entities that are diverse in their severity, their progression, and their frequency. However, what they have in common - if not managed correctly - is that they can have a major functional impact, amputation risk, or be life-threatening. The bacteria involved in upper limb infections are mainly Gram-positive cocci, but Gram-negative bacilli colonize bite wounds, which are common in the upper limb. From the most frequent and benign to the most serious, we distinguish:

Formulation and evaluation of herbal essential oil based nail lacquer for management of onychomycosis.

INTRODUCTION: Onychomycosis (Paronychia) is a common fungal nail infection, characterised by thickened, discoloured and brittle nails often accompanied by pain and discomfort. It is one of the most prevalent fungal nail infections with the global incidence of >20 % affected commonly by Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis. The market today is flooded with various antifungal therapies (Azoles, Imidazoles, Allylamines, etc.) but their clinical applicability is limited due to associated side effects. The study is an attempt to formulate essential oil-based nail lacquer against Candidal Onych

A classification of diabetic foot infections using ICD-9-CM codes: application to a large computerized medical database.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot infections are common, serious, and varied. Diagnostic and treatment strategies are correspondingly diverse. It is unclear how patients are managed in actual practice and how outcomes might be improved. Clarification will require study of large numbers of patients, such as are available in medical databases. We have developed and evaluated a system for identifying and classifying diabetic foot infections that can be used for this purpose. METHODS: We used the (VA) Diabetes Epidemiology Cohorts (DEpiC) database to conduct a retrospective observational study of patient

Sensitization to acrylates is a common adverse reaction to artificial fingernails.

BACKGROUND: Although precise figures for adverse reactions to nail-care products are not available, it is thought that one of the main risks from artificial nails (ANs) is contact allergy. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) as a cause of adverse reactions related to the use of ANs. METHOD: A 4-year retrospective study of patients with suspected ACD from ANs was conducted. Patients tested with the methacrylate artificial nail (MAAN) series were evaluated clinically and patch test results were analysed. RESULTS: ACD to components of ANs may be a frequent caus
