Image quality and radiation dose of reduced-dose abdominopelvic computed tomography (CT) with silver filter and deep learning reconstruction.

To assess the image quality and radiation dose between reduced-dose CT with deep learning reconstruction (DLR) using SilverBeam filter and standard dose with iterative reconstruction (IR) in abdominopelvic CT. In total, 182 patients (mean age ± standard deviation, 63 ± 14 years; 100 men) were included. Standard-dose scanning was performed with a tube voltage of 100 kVp, automatic tube current modulation, and IR reconstruction, whereas reduced-dose scanning was performed with a tube voltage of 120 kVp, a SilverBeam filter, and DLR. Additionally, a contrast-enhanced (CE)-boost image was obtained

CT angiography of the lower limbs: combining small field of view with large matrix size and iterative reconstruction further improves image quality of below-the-knee arteries.

BACKGROUND: Image quality and diagnostic accuracy in computed tomography angiography (CTA) reach their limits in imaging of below-the-knee vessels. PURPOSE: To evaluate whether image quality in CTA of lower limbs is further improvable by combining side-separate reconstruction with a larger matrix size and whether resulting noise can be compromised with iterative reconstruction (IR). MATERIAL AND METHODS: From CTA of the lower extremities of 26 patients (5 women, 21 men; mean age = 68.5 ± 10.3 years), the lower legs were reconstructed side-separately with different reconstruction algorithms a

Lung nodule classification using radiomics model trained on degraded SDCT images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening has shown promise in reducing lung cancer mortality; however, it suffers from high false positive rates and a scarcity of available annotated datasets. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel approach using synthetic LDCT images generated from standard-dose CT (SDCT) scans from the LIDC-IDRI dataset. Our objective is to develop and validate an interpretable radiomics-based model for distinguishing likely benign from likely malignant pulmonary nodules. METHODS: From a total of 1010 CT images (695 SDCTs and 315 LDC

Cross gender-age trabecular texture analysis in cone beam CT.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether multiple texture features in different regions of interest (ROIs) on cone beam CT (CBCT) are correlated with gender-age variation of trabecular patterns. METHODS: CBCT volumes from 96 subjects were used. The data set was divided into four gender-age subgroups, including males younger than 40 years, males older than 40 years, females younger than 40 years and females older than 40 years. For each volume, cubes containing trabecular patterns at four ROIs in the jaws were manually cropped. 18 distinct texture features were calculated and their correlation with

Correlation between human observer performance and model observer performance in differential phase contrast CT.

PURPOSE: With the recently expanding interest and developments in x-ray differential phase contrast CT (DPC-CT), the evaluation of its task-specific detection performance and comparison with the corresponding absorption CT under a given radiation dose constraint become increasingly important. Mathematical model observers are often used to quantify the performance of imaging systems, but their correlations with actual human observers need to be confirmed for each new imaging method. This work is an investigation of the effects of stochastic DPC-CT noise on the correlation of detection performan

Optimization of hypovascular liver lesion detectability in dual-energy CT using deep learning image reconstruction: a phantom study for potential iodine dose reduction.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the optimal low-keV level using deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) that maximizes lesion detectability, and to assess the potential for iodinated contrast media (ICM) reduction based on detectability improvements across varying patient body habitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An abdominal phantom was scanned using a standard thoraco-abdomino-pelvic dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) protocol during the portal venous phase, with three rings inserted simulating different body habitus. Virtual monoenergetic images (VMI) were reconstructed from 40 to 70 keV in 10 ke

Dose and blending fraction quantification for adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction based on low-contrast detectability in abdomen CT.

PURPOSE: The utilization of iterative reconstruction makes it difficult to identify the dose-noise relationship, resulting in empirical design of scan protocols and inconsistent conclusions on dose reduction for consistent image quality. This study was to quantitatively determine the dose and the blending fraction of adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR) based on the specified low-contrast detectability (LCD). METHODS: A tissue equivalent abdomen phantom and a GE discovery 750 HD computed tomography (CT) were utilized. The normality of the noise distribution was tested at vario

Iterative Reconstruction May Improve Diagnosis of Gout: An Ex Vivo (Bio)Phantom Dual-Energy Computed Tomography Study.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesize that, compared with filtered back projection (FBP), iterative reconstruction (IR) increases the detected volume of uric acid, which serves as a measure of the sensitivity of the method, and therefore allows examinations with lower radiation exposure. Thus, the aim of our study was to evaluate the role of IR in dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) for gout assessment and volumetry in an ex vivo gout model using an epoxy phantom and a biophantom. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prepared specimens with different concentrations of monosodium uric acid in ultrasound gel (30%

Assessment of an iterative reconstruction algorithm (SAFIRE) on image quality in pediatric cardiac CT datasets.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric cardiac patients often undergo repeat diagnostic testing, resulting in relatively high cumulative medical radiation exposure. Low-dose CT scanning techniques used to decrease radiation exposure may result in reduced image quality. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates a prototype iterative reconstruction algorithm, sinogram-affirmed iterative reconstruction (SAFIRE), to determine the effect on qualitative and quantitative measures of image quality in pediatric cardiac CT datasets, compared with a standard weighted filtered back projection (wFBP) algorithm. METHODS: Seventy-fo

Uniform image quality achieved by tube current modulation using SD of attenuation in coronary CT angiography.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to evaluate whether the SD of CT attenuation values obtained from unenhanced scans of the left atrium is a reliable parameter for the individual modulation of tube current to achieve uniform image quality in coronary CT angiography (CTA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred patients (59 men and 41 women) who were suspected to have coronary artery disease underwent coronary CTA using a 64-MDCT scanner. In addition to clinical studies, we also performed measurements on water phantoms. Tube current was modulated by the SD of the CT attenuation values meas

Knowledge-driven automated detection of pleural plaques and thickening in high resolution CT of the lung.

Consistent efforts are being made to build Computer-Aided Detection and Diagnosis systems for radiological images. Such systems depend on automated detection of various disease patterns, which are then combined together to obtain differential diagnosis. For diffuse lung diseases, over 12 disease patterns are of interest in High Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT) scans of the lung. In this paper, we present an automated detection method for two such patterns, namely Pleural Plaque and Diffuse Pleural Thickening. These are characteristic features of asbestos-related benign pleural disease. Th

The nasal septum deviation index (NSDI) based on CBCT data.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether three-dimensional morphometric parameters could be useful in nasal septal deviation (NSD) diagnosis and, secondarily, whether CBCT could be considered an adequate imaging technique for the proposed task. METHODS: We analysed images of 46 subjects who underwent CBCT for reasons not related to this study. Two experienced operators divided all the images into healthy and NSD subjects. Subsequently, the images were segmented using ITK Snap in order to obtain the three-dimensional model of the nasal airways and compute four morphological parameters: septal deviation an

Devising a novel evaluation method for computed tomography images containing metal artifacts from titanium seed implants: Application to virtual monochromatic imaging energy optimization.

INTRODUCTION: Metal artifact reduction (MAR) technology cannot fully eliminate metal artifacts from metallic devices in computed tomography (CT) images. Hence, it is important to investigate the optimal acquisition parameters and post-processing techniques. This study aimed to devise a novel evaluation method for images containing metal artifacts from titanium seed implants and identify the optimal energy level for virtual monochromatic imaging (VMI) to reduce metal artifacts and enhance signal detectability. METHODS: Post-brachytherapy CT scans are a clinical example of the effects of metal

Automated high-fidelity 3D reconstruction of middle-ear ossicles from low-resolution clinical CT using a deep learning pipeline.

This study validates an automated deep learning framework for generating high-fidelity 3D models of the middle-ear ossicles from low-resolution clinical CT images. The framework employs a sequential three-stage pipeline: (1) accurate Region of Interest (ROI) detection using YOLOv5x, (2) 4x super-resolution of the ROI with a Deep Back-Projection Network (DBPN), and (3) slice interpolation using a 2.5D U-Net to create a dense volumetric dataset. To ensure robust reconstruction from incomplete data, the interpolation stage integrates a "hint channel" that leverages anatomical priors. The framewor
