Advancing edema detection: Harnessing the power of machine learning and near infrared spectroscopy for cerebral and cerebellar edema assessment.

Edema, characterized by brain swelling, is a common response observed in various brain injuries. Timely detection of edema is crucial to mitigate the associated risks and improve patient care. This study evaluates the efficacy of CEREBO®, a non-invasive machine learning-powered near-infrared spectroscopy (mNIRS) based device, in detecting edema. The study was conducted on 234 participants with suspected head injuries who underwent simultaneous CEREBO® scans and CT head scans. The results of the study showed that CEREBO® effectively identified edematous lobes, achieving a sensitivity of 95.7%,

The Predictive Power of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Improving Cognitive Problems in Patients Undergoing Brain Surgeries: A Systematic Review.

One of the main objectives in neurosurgical procedures is the prevention of cerebral ischemia and hypoxia leading to secondary brain injury. Different methods for early detection of intraoperative cerebral ischemia and hypoxia have been used. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a simple, non-invasive method for monitoring cerebral oxygenation increasingly used today. The aim of this study was to systematically review the brain monitoring with NIRS in neurosurgery. The search process resulted in the detection of 324 articles using valid keywords on the electronic databases, including Embase, P

Measurement of lung oxygenation by near-infrared spectroscopy in preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome: A proof-of-concept study.

INTRODUCTION: Noninvasive markers more accurate than FiO2 would be useful to assess the severity of RDS and guide its treatment. Our aim was to assess for the first time the possibility of continuously monitoring lung oxygenation (rSO2 L) by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and to evaluate whether rSO2 L correlates with other oxygenation indices and RDS severity. METHODS: We carried out this proof-of-concept study on 20 preterm infants with RDS requiring noninvasive respiratory support. Patients were continuously studied for 24 h by NIRS and rSO2 L was correlated with SpO2 /FiO2 ratio, a/APO

Non-invasive near-infrared spectroscopy assessment of the spinal neurovascular response in a patient with transverse myelitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Transverse myelitis (TM) is characterized by acute development of motor, sensory and autonomic dysfunctions due to horizontally diffused inflammation in one or more segments of the spinal cord in the absence of a compressive lesion. The not well-known inflammation process induces demyelination resulting in neurological dysfunction. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report we used a functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) technique to evaluate changes in the peri-spinal vascular response induced by a peripheral median nerve electrical stimulation in a patient with chronic trans

Evaluation of the Quality of Chest Compression with Oxyhemoglobin Level by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in a Rat Asphyxia Cardiac Arrest Model.

The real-time evaluation of chest compression during cardiopulmonary resuscitation is important to increase the chances of survival from a cardiac arrest (CA). In addition, cerebral oxygen level measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) plays an important role as an indicator of return of spontaneous circulation. Recently, we developed a new method to improve the quality of chest compression using a thoracic pump in conjunction with the classic cardiac pump in a rat asphyxia CA model. This study evaluated the quality of chest compression using NIRS in male Sprague-Dawley rats. NIRS was att

Pilot test of an online training module on near-infrared spectroscopy monitoring for the randomised clinical trial SafeBoosC-III.

BACKGROUND: SafeBoosC-III is an international randomised clinical trial to evaluate the effect of treatment of extremely preterm infants during the first 3 days of life based on cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) monitoring versus treatment and monitoring as usual. To ensure high quality of the trial intervention as well as of patient care, we have developed a multilingual web-based training program to train relevant staff and test their competence. As we enter an under-explored area of e-learning, we have conducted a pilot study on the first of the five modules comprising the web-base

Delayed hemodynamic responses associated with a history of suicide attempts in bipolar disorder: a multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with a high risk of suicide compared with other psychiatric disorders. Recent studies using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) reported frontotemporal functional abnormalities in BD. However, it remains unclear whether NIRS signal changes are associated with vulnerability toward suicide in BD. We recruited 20 patients with depressed BD with a history of suicide attempts (suicide attempters; SAs) and 28 control patients with BD who did not have a history of suicide attempts (non-attempters; NAs). Regional hemodynamic responses during a verbal fluency task were

Near infrared and skin impedance spectroscopy - a possible support in the diagnostic process of skin tumours in primary health care.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The global incidence of skin cancer has increased drastically in recent decades, especially in Australia and Northern Europe. Early detection is crucial for good prognosis and high survival rates. In general, primary care physicians have considerably lower sensitivity and specificity rates for detection of skin cancer, compared to dermatologists. A probable main reason for this is that current diagnostic tools are subjective in nature, and therefore diagnostic skills highly depend on experience. Illustratively, in Sweden, approximately 155 500 benign skin lesions are excise

Infants' neural responses to facial emotion in the prefrontal cortex are correlated with temperament: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Accurate decoding of facial expressions is critical for human communication, particularly during infancy, before formal language has developed. Different facial emotions elicit distinct neural responses within the first months of life. However, there are broad individual differences in such responses, so that the same emotional expression can elicit different brain responses in different infants. In this study, we sought to investigate such differences in the processing of emotional faces by analyzing infants's cortical metabolic responses to face stimuli and examining whether individual diffe

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy to probe state- and trait-like conditions in chronic tinnitus: a proof-of-principle study.

OBJECTIVE: Several neuroscience tools showed the involvement of auditory cortex in chronic tinnitus. In this proof-of-principle study we probed the capability of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) for the measurement of brain oxygenation in auditory cortex in dependence from chronic tinnitus and from intervention with transcranial magnetic stimulation. METHODS: Twenty-three patients received continuous theta burst stimulation over the left primary auditory cortex in a randomized sham-controlled neuronavigated trial (verum = 12; placebo = 11). Before and after treatment, sound-evoke

Comparison of lipid deposition at coronary bifurcations versus at nonbifurcation portions of coronary arteries as determined by near-infrared spectroscopy.

Atherosclerosis has been shown to develop preferentially at sites of coronary bifurcation, yet culprit lesions resulting in ST-elevation myocardial infarction do not occur more frequently at these sites. We hypothesized that these findings can be explained by similarities in intracoronary lipid and that lipid and lipid core plaque would be found with similar frequency in coronary bifurcation and nonbifurcation segments. One hundred seventy bifurcations were identified, 156 of which had comparative nonbifurcation segments proximal and/or distal to the bifurcation. We compared lipid deposition a

Non-invasive in situ identification and band assignments of diazepam, flunitrazepam and methadone hydrochloride with FT-near-infrared spectroscopy.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) has evolved into an important rapid, direct and non-invasive technique in drugs analysis. In this study, the suitability of NIR spectroscopy to identify two benzodiazepine derivatives, diazepam and flunitrazepam, and a synthetic opiate, methadone hydrochloride, inside USP vials and probe the solid-state form of diazepam presents in tablets has been explored. The results show the potential of NIR spectroscopy for rapid, in situ and non-destructive identification of drugs.

Rapid multi-component quantification and quality assessment of Relinqing® granule (Polygonum capitatum) by near-infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics.

Relinqing® granule (RLQ), derived from Polygonum capitatum (P. capitatum), is traditionally used to treat urinary system disorders, but its quality control remains limited to gallic acid content in the 2020 Chinese Pharmacopeia. This narrow standard restricts comprehensive quality evaluation and broader use in functional foods and nutraceuticals. To address this issue, this study identified additional bioactive compounds and established a multi-marker quality control strategy. Twenty compounds were isolated from P. capitatum, among which gallic acid, ellagic acid, and quercetin showed signific
